A Quiet Night Interrupted

Bob pulls his battered truck into the gravel driveway. The silence of the night is a heavy, welcome blanket after the chaos at the bait shop.

Bob

Bob

Finally home. That was a hell of a night, and I am beat.

Bob

Bob

Just need a warm meal and a quiet hour. If that ice cream truck follows me here, I’m taking the tire iron to it myself.

Inside the house, a warm yellow lamp glows against the darkness. Mr. Mittens trots over, weaving between Bob’s legs with a demanding purr. Bob kicks off his boots, sinks into his worn recliner, and pulls a plastic container of Janice’s pot roast from the fridge.

Bob

Bob

There you go, buddy. Plenty for both of us.

He clicks the television on, letting the blue light flicker across the living room to drown out the lingering memory of that dissonant, guttural jingle. He takes a long, slow sip of his beer, but his eyes drift toward the front window. A flicker of movement catches his eye from the street lamp outside.

“Eh... *He gets up, peeks out the blinds* ... Can't a man just eat in peace with his cat?”

Bob

Bob

You have got to be kidding me.

Bob shifts the plastic slats of the blinds just enough to get a clear view. The street lamp buzzes, casting a harsh, artificial glow over the driveway. Parked right beneath the light is the pastel-colored ice cream truck, its neon paint job garish and unsettling in the night. The passenger door is wide open, swinging slightly in the wind, and a pair of mud-caked boots are visible on the asphalt, standing perfectly still.

Bob

Bob

That’s not a delivery. He’s waiting for me to turn off the lights. He knows I’m home.

Bob feels the floorboards groan under his weight as he pulls back from the window. The jingle starts up, faint and distorted, playing from speakers that sound like they are struggling to keep the rhythm.

Bob

Bob

Not tonight, you son of a bitch. Not in my living room.

He grabs his heavy iron fishing rod from the corner, his knuckles white against the cork grip.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

A Quiet Night Interrupted

Bob’s hands tremble, not from fear, but from a surge of righteous indignation. He marches toward the wall-mounted landline, the plastic cord stretching taut as he puts distance between himself and the window. He punches the speed dial for the Sheriff’s office, his thumb hovering over the receiver.

Bob

Bob

Sheriff, this is Bob. That lunatic is in my driveway. I’m telling you, I’m scared for my life, and I’m sitting here with absolutely nothing to defend myself. You need to get someone out here right now.

Bob

Bob

That should get the ball rolling. If he thinks I’m helpless, maybe he’ll try to force the door before the deputies arrive. Then I’ll show him exactly how a Canadian handles an intruder.

The line clicks. A raspy, familiar voice hums through the earpiece, but it is not the dispatcher. It is the tinny, synthesized melody of the ice cream truck, playing perfectly through the phone line.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

You really shouldn't have called the law, Bob. They never make it on time.

“... *He nods, now Bob is pissed, he simply hangs up the phone, and starts rigging his house* (Traps)”

SUCCESS (Superb Fabrication (Creative), rolled +1)

A Quiet Night Interrupted

Bob slams the phone down, his jaw setting into a hard, granite line. He doesn't need to hear Dave's twisted taunts. With a grunt, he pivots to his workbench, his large, calloused hands moving with a fluid grace that betrays his heavy frame. He isn't building a flail; he is setting the stage.

Bob

Bob

You want to visit, Dave? Let’s make sure you get a proper welcome.

He yanks the primary circuit breaker, plunging the house into near-total darkness, then sets to work in the moonlight. He rigs the front door with a high-tension spring salvaged from his truck's suspension, connecting it to a heavy-duty deadbolt. Next, he carefully wires a series of oversized, rusted fishhooks to the base of the door frame, hidden perfectly beneath the welcome mat. He finishes by balancing a gallon of boiling motor oil on the top edge of the door, tethered by a hair-trigger tripwire.

Bob

Bob

One step inside and the physics of this house turn against him.

Bob ducks into the hallway, gripping his heavy fishing rod. Outside, the engine revs, and a heavy boot hits the porch.

The porch light flickers one last time before dying, swallowed by the darkness Bob created. The silence is heavy, broken only by the rhythmic, wet thud of heavy boots ascending the wooden steps.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

Come on now, Bob. Don't hide. We have so much to talk about, and the cream is starting to melt.

Bob

Bob

You talk a big game, Dave, but you’re walking straight into a lesson in home-grown engineering.

The doorknob jiggles, then twists with aggressive force. As the latch clears the strike plate, the suspension spring snaps back with a violent metallic screech. The door swings inward, and the gallon of oil teeters precariously at the threshold. Bob holds his breath, his knuckles white around the grip of his heavy fishing rod, waiting for the tell-tale crunch of the hidden fishhooks under the intruder's weight.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

I see you in there, Bob. I can smell your fear.

Bob

Bob

Keep talking, you sick freak. Just one more inch.

Bob

Bob

Wait. Why is my foot slipping? Did I track grease in here earlier?

Bob lunges forward to swing, but his sock hits the very oil he spilled. His center of gravity, usually stable with a beer in hand, betrays him entirely.

Bob

Bob

Oh for heaven's sake. Not like this.

Bob slams into the floorboards with a bone jarring thud, his fishing pole clattering uselessly against the wall. The door swings fully open, revealing Icecream Dave standing in the threshold, unmoved by the trap.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

You really should have invested in a better mop, Bob. Now, let's see how much fight you have left when you are staring up from the ground.

“... Is there a reason you're, transforming into an.. ice-cream man? Like, a man who is part ice-cream, honestly, have you looked in a mirror lately?”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Bob

Is there a reason you are, transforming into an... ice-cream man? Like, a man who is part ice-cream. Honestly, have you looked in a mirror lately?

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

The absurdity of this man is almost refreshing. He truly has no idea what is coming for him.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

Mirrors are for people who intend to stick around, Bob. I prefer the reflection of a cold, empty freezer.

Dave steps further into the room, the tinny, distorted lullaby of his truck music bleeding in through the open door to drown out the evening crickets.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

Tell me, before I finish this, does the flavor of failure taste as sweet as my Rocky Road?

He reaches into his apron pocket, pulling out a heavy, serrated ice pick that glints under the dim hallway light.

“Fuck it, wrestle him to the ground, use whatever you Have, pin him then fuck him up. "You're a horrible neighbor Dave!"”

FAILURE (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Bob

Bob

You are a horrible neighbor, Dave!

Bob

Bob

He is way too light on his feet for a guy his size.

Bob lunges upward, aiming to tackle the man, but his momentum is betrayed by the slick oil patch on the hardwood. He crashes into Dave, but instead of pinning him, Bob just slides harmlessly past.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

You missed, neighbor. And now, you are wide open.

Dave pivots with terrifying grace, bringing the heel of his heavy boot down hard onto the back of Bob's wrist as he tries to stand.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

He is frantic, clumsy, and completely pathetic. It will be a shame when the screaming stops.

“*You know what, fuck this guy, adrenaline, every ounce of frustration, everytime Bob held his tongue, chose patience, everytime he chose giving the benefit of the doubt instead of going with the truth: Explodes in a moment of pure strength and will Bob didn't know he possessed* (One of us is dyin' tonight and I'm not the one who's a SHITty neighbor)”

Bob strains against the floor, muscles shaking, but the pinned wrist buckles under Dave's boot.

Dave snaps his free hand down and plucks the fishing rod out of reach, dragging it closer with a slow, mocking scrape.

Bad neighbors lose their toys first.

The open front door throws a thin blade of porch light across the hall, and something else moves in it, a second shadow at the threshold.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

Stay down, Bob. I brought company.

A woman's voice calls from outside, sharp and uncertain. "Dave? You said he was gone."

Dave's grin tightens as he shifts his weight, keeping Bob pinned while he turns his head toward the door.

“Go for his balls, maybe bite his ankle, fight”

Bob jerks hard, misses the groin shot by inches, and his teeth catch a boot instead. Dave hisses and yanks his leg back, the pin slipping loose.

The ice pick flashes up between them, not stabbing yet, just threatening, close enough to turn Bob's stomach.

Bob

Bob

His boot's off the wrist. The floor is still slick.

Dave steps back a half pace, one hand guarding his leg, the other keeping the ice pick ready. His grin is gone now.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

You really want to do this on the kitchen floor, Bob?

From the doorway, the woman in the porch light stops dead, seeing Bob on the floor and Dave armed in the hall. The open door lets in a colder strip of night air.

Bob

There. The floor is slick, and the rod is still in reach.

He plants one hand, drags himself sideways, and hooks the fishing pole closer with his boot before anyone can grab it.

The pole skids to a stop against his shin. Nearby, a small can of lamp oil lies on its side by the baseboard, half-spilled from the earlier mess.

Dave’s gaze drops to the oil, then snaps back up, wary now of the floor instead of just Bob.

His mockery hangs there a second, thin and ridiculous in the cold house.

The woman’s voice softens the room instead of cutting it. Dave shifts, irritated, and the kitchen doorway keeps swallowing whatever is back there.

Bob’s nonsense buys him a beat, and the woman looks from Dave to the shadowed doorway like she is suddenly reconsidering both of them.

Unknown Woman

Because he said you were going to ruin everything, and then he told me to come see it for myself. He never says the same thing twice, so I came to check the evidence with my own eyes.

Icecream Dave

Icecream Dave

That is not what I said. I said she was already involved, and you were making it worse by nosing around where you do not belong.

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

You called me from a burner number, told me there was a man in this house, and left out the part where the man was you. That is not a favor.

Bob’s words hang between them, and the woman’s face tightens as she looks from Dave to the dark hallway. The lie lands hard enough to tilt her stance away from him.

Unknown Woman

He brought me here because he wanted me to see your house, your setup, and your panic. I think he wanted me to pick a side before I knew what game he was playing.
