The mountain pass is a desolate scar of granite and ice. The air bites with a crystalline chill, and the silence is absolute, save for the rhythmic crunch of snow underfoot. A jagged, violet-hued fracture hangs in the sky like a broken mirror, the remnants of the portal through which Kingnasir and Brann stumbled.

Kingnasir
The cold is biting through my skin. I need to move before this pass turns into my grave.
A figure emerges from the swirling white haze ahead. Wrapped in thick, charcoal-colored furs and carrying a heavy wooden staff tipped with iron, the stranger pauses. He tilts his head, yellow eyes narrowing as he spots the travelers.

Stranger
You move like men who have nowhere left to run. This mountain does not care for your warmth, nor your secrets.

Kingnasir
We are just passing through, traveler. Do you know the way to the capital?

Kingnasir
I cannot trust him, but he knows these crags better than I. I will keep my hand near my knife.

Find the way to the capital
“Yo brann who is this guy”
FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -3)

The biting wind howls, swirling the snow into blinding curtains. Kingnasir turns his head to seek Brann, but the sudden gust and the sheer scale of the frozen pass hide his companion entirely from view.

Kingnasir
Where did he vanish to? I cannot afford to be separated here.

Stranger
You mutter to ghosts, boy. Your companion lacks your resolve, and he has already chosen a different path through the drift.
The Stranger gestures toward the abyss with his iron-tipped staff. The violet fracture in the sky pulses, casting long, sickly shadows across the ice, distorting the path ahead into a labyrinth of shifting grey shapes. Kingnasir feels a sudden, heavy pressure in his chest, a sensation of being watched by something far older than the mountains themselves.

Kingnasir
My heart is hammering. This is not just the cold.

Stranger
The capital is a dream for those who survive the night. Do you have the strength to wake up, or will you freeze like the others?
“What brann what do you think”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

Kingnasir
I am here, Kingnasir. Do not trust the robed man. The path he points to feels like a trap designed to hollow out our resolve.

Kingnasir
My eyes feel heavy, and my skin crawls. Brann is right, but the wind is biting, and the fog makes it impossible to track my own footsteps.
The violet fracture in the sky crackles, shedding embers of pure, cold light that hiss as they hit the snow. The Stranger stands motionless, his staff dug deep into the shifting grey earth, as if he is anchoring himself to the fabric of this broken reality.

Stranger
Your companion speaks with the naivety of the dead. Look closer at the horizon, boy. The capital is not hidden by fog, but by the very space you refuse to cross.
Kingnasir shifts his grip on his knife, his knuckles white against the pommel. He notices the grey shapes of the labyrinth beginning to coil around the Stranger's feet, reaching out like smoke.

Kingnasir
I need to make a choice before the path shifts again and leaves me isolated.
“Sorry me and my friend have been to a lot where are you taking us”
SUCCESS (Poor Persuasion, rolled +1)

Kingnasir
We have been through enough already. My companion and I are just trying to find the way to the capital. Where are you actually taking us?

Stranger
To the capital, boy. Though you seem to think it is a place on a map, when it is truly a destination of blood and consequence. Follow the grey if you wish to arrive with your soul intact.

Kingnasir
His voice sounds like grinding stones, yet he hasn't moved to strike. Perhaps he is a guide, or perhaps he is just waiting for the labyrinth to do the work for him.
The Stranger steps forward, the violet light from the fracture casting long, jagged shadows against the shifting ground. He gestures toward a narrow gap in the grey shapes, where the air seems to ripple like heat over a summer road.

Kingnasir
The way forward looks like a tear in the world. If I walk through that, there is no turning back to the mountain path.
“Okay I gues lets go brann”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Kingnasir
Brann, stay close. If this leads to the capital, I am not letting you fall behind in this mess.

Kingnasir
I do not like the look of that tear, Kingnasir. It smells of ozone and old, forgotten things. But if we stay here, the frost will surely claim us before the dawn.

Kingnasir
My knuckles turn white around the hilt of my blade. The air by the rift is cold enough to burn, yet it pulls at my skin like a physical tether. I have to trust that my draconic blood can withstand whatever energy is leaking through that threshold.
Kingnasir steps forward, his boots crunching against the frozen crust. As he nears the shimmering gap, the grey smoke-shapes recoil, bowing as if acknowledging a master. The Stranger waits, his silhouette swallowed by the swirling, violet light of the opening. Kingnasir hesitates for a heartbeat, his gaze locked onto the distortion, before he crosses the threshold into the unknown.
