Roots Reveal the Escape Passage
Susan
Susan

A faint vibration travels through the maintenance corridor. Thin roots split the concrete beside the rendezvous group, lifting dust as a pastel-red deer rises from the opening.

Susan presses one hand to the floor, tracking movement through the structure instead of sound. Her golden-brown eyes narrow toward the ceiling, where distant machinery trembles overhead.

She gives a sharp warning signal, then points along the corridor toward a seam hidden behind bundled cables and corroded plating.

Silver

Silver

Badniks overhead. How close?

Susan taps the floor twice, then spreads two fingers toward the platform and draws them rapidly inward. The vibration above grows heavier, approaching the concealed hatch.

Wanda

Wanda

That passage could get everyone beyond the scan, but it may be unstable.

The hidden seam parts as roots pull the plating aside, revealing a narrow descending passage threaded with dead conduits. Susan waits beside it, one hand raised for silence.

“I quietly inspect the passage for Badnik sensors”

Nobody crouches at the passage mouth and scans its dead conduits, cable seams, and dust patterns without disturbing the roots or plating. The shoulder cut stays quiet while they hold still.

Their inspection catches three recessed Badnik sensor lenses tucked beneath the conduit ribs, powered down and facing the corridor entrance. A hair-thin signal wire runs toward the upper platform, but it carries no active pulse.

Nobody traces the safe angles with two fingers, marking the blind spaces between the lenses. The descending passage is clear of active sensors, and the dormant units cannot see the group moving below.

Susan watches the hand signals, then presses her palm to the floor and nods once, confirming the passage carries no approaching vibration.

Silver

Silver

Good. We take the blind spaces and keep the group together.

Wanda

Wanda

I will keep the beacon shielded. Point out each step, and nobody touches those conduits.

Susan holds the roots aside while the rendezvous group files into the mapped blind spaces. Above, the Badnik vibration remains distant; below, the inspected passage opens safely into darkness.

Nobody raises a closed fist, then points to the first pocket between the dormant lenses. The rendezvous group lowers together, following their signals into the sensor blind spaces.

Nobody slips between conduit ribs and guides each survivor through the alternating shadows. Their shoulder brushes a cable bundle during a careful turn, bringing a brief sting, but no lens activates.

Susan

Susan

The floor remains still.

Susan signs the warning with two fingers held low, then sweeps her palm forward. Nobody answers with a precise downward motion, and the group continues without disturbing the roots or wire.

Silver

Silver

Keep them tight. We are clear of the first sensor bank.

Nobody leads the final survivors beneath the conduit ribs and past the recessed lenses. The hair-thin signal wire stays dark; every person reaches the wider maintenance chamber untouched.

Wanda

Wanda

The beacon is still shielded. Nobody got everyone through.

Susan releases the roots only after the last foot clears the blind spaces. Behind them, the sensors remain dormant, and the descending passage hides the entire rendezvous group from the scan.

“Are the dormant sensors part of a Badnik trap?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 67)

The last survivor clears the recessed lenses. Nothing activates behind them, but a concealed shutter drops across the passage with a heavy hydraulic slam.

Susan presses her palm to the floor and signs rapidly: the sensors are dead infrastructure, not a Badnik ambush. The shutter’s vibration comes from an old security lock.

Silver

Silver

So the blind route is safe, but sealed. Nobody forces it. We find another exit.

Susan hooks two fingers beneath a corroded conduit panel and signals downward. Roots pry it loose, exposing a narrow service crawlspace beneath the shutter.

Wanda

Wanda

It is cramped, but it bypasses the lock. I can keep the beacon shielded while everyone crosses.

The opened crawlspace angles toward a deeper chamber, where low machinery hums beyond the old sensor network. Its narrow frame offers the group one usable route forward.

Susan holds the loosened panel aside and points into the darkness, waiting for the group to choose the safer passage.

Nobody drops into the crawlspace and leads the rendezvous group beneath the shutter. Their wings fold tight against the metal, while Susan keeps roots braced overhead.

The passage forces a careful sideways turn. Nobody's shoulder cut stings as they shift through, but they keep the beacon's faint tremor behind them and guide each survivor by hand signals.

Silver

Silver

Stay low. Follow Nobody's path and keep your gear against your chest.

Silver enters after the last survivor, one hand skimming the ceiling for loose plating. Wanda shields the beacon under her coat, its pulse reduced to a muted vibration.

Susan

Susan

The floor is steady. The chamber is close.

Nobody reaches the far end first and pulls aside a hanging cable curtain. The crawlspace opens into a deeper maintenance chamber, and the entire rendezvous group emerges intact beneath steady machinery hum.

Wanda

Wanda

Everyone is through. The signal is still covered.

Susan releases the roots behind them. The old shutter remains sealed, but the crawlspace now places the survivors beyond the sensor bank and out of the Badnik scan.

✓ Quest Accepted

Find an exit from the maintenance chamber

“I check the chamber walls and machinery for a way forward.”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Roots Reveal the Escape Passage
Susan
Susan

Nobody sweeps the chamber walls and machinery with careful attention, following conduit runs, maintenance seams, and the faint rhythm beneath the floor. The rendezvous group stays clustered behind them.

Nobody the Bat

Nobody the Bat

The machinery is still powered, and the conduit network is carrying current toward the east wall.

Behind a bank of corroded coolant pipes, Nobody finds a maintenance schematic stamped into the wall. A concealed service door sits beneath it, its manual release connected to the live conduit.

Silver

Silver

That is a real route. If the current is stable, it should lead beyond the sealed sensor section.

Nobody traces the schematic to a junction box and identifies the safe release sequence. The door opens into a sloping utility tunnel, wide enough for the survivors to pass in single file.

Wanda

Wanda

I can keep the beacon covered through there. The machinery hum should mask its remaining pulse.

Susan presses her palm to the floor, then nods toward the tunnel. No approaching vibration answers from below. The route forward is open, powered, and clear of movement.
