The abandoned building squats beyond the ash flats, its windows blind and its service doors warped open. A battered transport beacon pulses from the loading bay, broadcasting into the dead air.

One approach cuts through a strip of fresh damage: shattered concrete, scraped metal, and dark blood drying across the dust. The trail disappears behind the building, toward the rendezvous route.

Silver

Silver

The western approach is clear for now. That beacon is advertising us to every patrol in range.

Silver keeps watch from a collapsed section of wall, teal eyes tracking the horizon and the rusted skeletons of distant machinery. He never stops scanning long enough to relax.

Wanda

Wanda

I know. I can dampen the transmission, but I need another minute. If I cut it completely, the others may miss the signal.

Wanda kneels beside the beacon, shielding its exposed circuitry from the ash while her tools blink in the gray light. Each adjustment lowers the pulse, but never quite silences it.

Silver

Silver

Then we hold here. Nobody, stay ready. If the others arrive, we move them inside fast.

Keep the rendezvous group safe

“Can I reach the service doors without crossing the fresh damage?”

NO (Even, rolled 71)

The clean western approach ends at a collapsed service trench. Fresh damage spans the only gap, with buckled plating and dark blood sealing the route to the doors.

Silver

Silver

No. The damage runs all the way across. There is no safe line to the doors from this side.

Silver points toward the building without leaving his cover. A jagged section of roadway has dropped into the trench, exposing cables that spark beneath the ash.

Wanda

Wanda

Then the western approach is out. I cannot keep working here if the patrols see that beacon first.

The beacon pulses again, faint but visible through the haze. Between it and the service doors, the fresh damage forms an unbroken barrier.

Silver

Silver

We need another approach, or we wait until Wanda finishes damping the signal. Nobody, keep the horizon covered.

Wanda

Wanda

Give me a little longer. After that, we can move without advertising exactly where we are.

The service doors remain visible beyond the ruined ground, close enough to tempt a direct route and inaccessible without crossing the fresh damage.

Nobody gives Silver a sharp two-finger signal toward the perimeter, then traces a question through the air: another route to the service doors. Silver catches it immediately.

Silver

Silver

I’ll check the eastern side. Keep Wanda on the beacon.

Silver slips from the collapsed wall and threads between rusted supports, staying below the haze. The beacon pulses twice while his attention leaves the western gap.

Wanda

Wanda

That is another few seconds I have to account for. The signal is still dampening, not silent.

A moment later, Silver raises one hand from behind a bank of fallen ductwork. Beyond him, a maintenance trench runs beneath the roadway and reaches the building's eastern loading platform.

Silver

Silver

Found an approach. The trench gets us under the damage and straight to the east platform, but I cannot confirm what is beyond the doors.

Keep the rendezvous group safe

“I keep Wanda on the beacon while guiding the rendezvous group east.”

Nobody keeps Wanda anchored to the beacon with one hand signal while sweeping the other toward the eastern trench. The rendezvous group follows through the ash, hunched and silent.

A gust tears the signal apart. The group veers toward a collapsed duct instead of Silver’s position, bunching at the trench lip as loose plating shifts under their feet.

Silver

Silver

Stop there! Stay together and do not cross the plating.

Nobody redirects them with sharper gestures, but the delay costs the clean approach. The beacon flashes through Wanda’s hands, throwing their silhouettes across the ruined roadway.

Wanda

Wanda

I can hold the dampening, but not forever. The service door is no longer our safest entry.

Silver crouches beside the ductwork and clears ash from a narrow maintenance hatch. Its manual release still has power, leading beneath the eastern platform.

Silver

Silver

There. We use the hatch. Nobody, bring them low and we can get everyone under cover.

“Is someone deliberately tracking the beacon?”

YES (Likely, rolled 43)

A thin red line sweeps across the ash from somewhere beyond the western ruins. It pauses on the beacon, then narrows, measuring the signal instead of merely receiving it.

Two black Badnik scouts rise above the distant machinery, their camera clusters fixed on the loading bay. They hold position rather than advancing, quietly refining the beacon’s location.

Silver

Silver

That is no patrol sweep. They are triangulating the beacon and waiting for us to gather.

Silver’s gaze snaps from the hovering machines to the clustered survivors. The drones shift a few degrees together, correcting their angle whenever the beacon pulses.

Wanda

Wanda

They found the transmission before we reached the building. Someone is guiding them, or their search grid is already watching this route.

The beacon emits another muted pulse. Both scouts turn toward the eastern hatch, and a distant relay answers from behind the ruined roadway. The tracking is deliberate, coordinated, and active.

Silver

Silver

Nobody, get everyone under the platform now. We are not waiting for those machines to finish the lock.

Nobody sweeps the rendezvous group beneath the eastern platform, using sharp hand signals and the sheltering wreckage to keep everyone low and moving together.

The survivors reach the maintenance hatch without breaking formation. Above them, the platform’s shadow swallows their silhouettes as the red scan passes over the loading bay.

Silver

Silver

Good. Keep them against the inner wall. The scouts have lost a clean view of us.

Silver drops into the trench after them and gestures the group farther beneath the platform. Wanda follows with the beacon clutched close, its pulse reduced to a faint tremor.

Wanda

Wanda

Everyone is under cover. I can finish damping it here, but I need quiet hands and no sudden movement.

The two Badnik scouts hover beyond the ruined roadway, their lenses sweeping the empty approach. The rendezvous group is concealed beneath the eastern platform, with the hatch within reach.

Silver

Silver

Then we stay quiet. Nobody got us here cleanly.

For the moment, only the beacon’s muted vibration and the distant hum of Badnik rotors disturb the shelter beneath the platform.

Nobody eases the maintenance hatch open and signals the rendezvous group forward. He leads them through the cramped passage beneath the platform, keeping each survivor low beneath the humming machinery.

The hatch frame catches Nobody's shoulder as he turns to make room. Metal scrapes through his coat and leaves a hot, shallow cut, but he stays braced until the last survivor slips inside.

Silver

Silver

Keep moving. The passage is clear.

Silver pulls the hatch nearly shut behind them. Its reinforced panel seals out the red scan, leaving only a thin vibration from the beacon in Wanda's hands.

Wanda

Wanda

Nobody, your shoulder is bleeding. Hold still when we reach the inner junction.

The rendezvous group settles along the inner wall, safely inside the maintenance corridor. Above, the Badnik scouts continue searching the empty loading bay while the survivors disappear from their view.

Silver

Silver

You got everyone through. That buys us time.

Nobody releases the hatch only after the final latch catches. The scrape across his shoulder stings with each movement, but the group is under cover and the route is secured.
