At dusk, The Lady Eudora awakens beneath unfamiliar trees, her pale blue-silver skin cold with forest mist. No grave, ruin, or memory explains her return.

She follows a muddy path into a village of timber cottages and enters a crowded inn. Hearthlight glints across her black cloak and raven-feathered collar.

Near the hearth, a young adult man with a lean build kneels before wary strangers. His travel-stained crimson cloak bears a broken golden crown, and a scar crosses one eyebrow.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

Please, I beg you. My cousin takes the throne by force, and every lord who resists him disappears. I need allies before he finds me.

From beneath his cloak, the exiled prince, his angular face framed by tousled brown hair and a weathered jaw reveals a fist-sized black reliquary veined with violet light. The inn's candles gutter as unseen pressure rolls through the room.

the innkeeper

Hide that cursed thing! By every god, what have you brought to my door?

Outside, hoofbeats multiply beyond the shutters. The reliquary answers with a deep pulse, and frightened patrons turn toward the entrance as the doors begin to shake.

Secure the black reliquary

“I entered the Inn and shifted amongst the crowd. I am unsure of this allegedly prince's claims, but the object he harbors intrigues me. I'm feeling a little dry and slow after my revival. If I can get that reliquary in my hands, I'll be on my way and leave this place before whatever is banging on the entrance doors makes things more complicated than they need to be. "I can assist you, boy." I step out from the crowd of patrons, my voice purposefully sweet. "Hand it to me, and I shall hide it some place safe."”

The Lady Eudora shifts through the packed patrons, cloak brushing wool and leather, until hearthlight catches her pale blue-silver face. The reliquary pulses again in the exiled prince’s grasp.

I can assist you, boy. Hand it to me, and I shall hide it someplace safe.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

No. Forgive me, lady, but I have survived too many offers of safety. This relic does not leave my hands.

His fingers close around the black casing. Violet light threads between his knuckles, and the nearest patrons recoil as though the object has heard Eudora’s request.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

You speak sweetly, yet you look at it as a starving wolf looks at a lamb. Stand back, or I will trust the men outside before I trust you.

The accusation turns the room against her; several patrons edge between Eudora and the exiled prince. The reliquary’s pulse steadies, now answering only his grip.

The Lady Eudora

The relic binds more strongly to him when threatened.

“I pause. Not offended by any means, but slightly surprised how quickly the prince was willing to change his cause. One moment he's desperately willing to give the reliquary away, the next he's clinging to it as if its his own skin. Interesting. A small smile etches into my lips. Perhaps he's not in as much control of what he harbors as he thinks he is. "A touching refusal, honey." I proceed calmly after a brief pause. "But as it would seem, you're a little short on options. If I were you, I'd make my choice quickly rather than spend time hoarding your..." I flick a wrist lazily at the reliquary. "...precious object."”

The Lady Eudora pauses amid the wary circle. Surprise briefly touches her pale face, then a small smile etches across her lips as the reliquary pulses against the exiled prince’s chest.

A touching refusal, honey. But you are short on options. If I were you, I would choose quickly rather than hoard your precious object.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

You mistake possession for choice. I cannot hand it over, and I will not let you take it.

His defiance falters when violet veins crawl up his wrist. The reliquary tightens against his palm, drawing a sharp breath and forcing him to stagger backward.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

Gods preserve me... it is listening. Every time I resist, it clings harder.

The patrons retreat from both relic and prince, leaving a widening ring of bare floor. His claim of control lies visibly broken, yet the casing remains sealed to him.

the exiled prince

Then tell me, witch. If I cannot give it away, what choice do you believe remains?

“I tilt my head, my smile broadening. "Now, we're getting somewhere. " I straighten my posture, holding myself with dignity, and folding one hand behind my back while I gesture toward the reliquary with my opposite arm. "The reliquary clearly holds a tie to its wielder. Your first mistake was putting your hands on it. But, if you aren't willing to hand it to me then of course you could grant it to those approaching outside, just as you said. Let the burden be someone else's and free of your own." If he does wind up doing as I say, I will wind up having to pursue the men. Which, isn't a terrible option. Means more fun for me.”

Now, we’re getting somewhere. The reliquary clearly binds itself to its wielder. Your first mistake was taking hold of it. If you will not hand it to me, grant it to those outside. Let the burden become someone else’s, and free yourself.

The Lady Eudora straightens with grave dignity, one hand folding behind her back while the other indicates the shaking doors. Violet light pulses beneath the prince’s fingers.

the exiled prince

the exiled prince

You make surrender sound like wisdom. Yet if it abandons me only when another claims it, I would be gifting them a curse, not seeking rescue.

He turns toward the entrance, then stops. The reliquary’s violet veins withdraw from his wrist for one breath, revealing a hair-thin sigil glowing beneath its black casing.

the exiled prince

It did not answer my fear. It answered the thought of another bearer.

the exiled prince

Perhaps there is a choice after all, witch. Not giving it away, but naming who receives it. Tell me, would you truly let those men take it?

The question hangs over the bare floor. His grip loosens by a fraction, but the relic remains sealed to him, and the approaching hoofbeats draw nearer beyond the shutters.

“"Well of course. I did just suggest the option after all. Your conscience of their subsequent consequences are insignificant compared to your own benefit." The plan has changed mid-beat. If the prince proceeds to do as I've told him, I will stab him in the back with my wand, kill him, and retrieve the reliquary myself to suck its power dry.”

Well, of course. I did suggest the option. Your conscience about their consequences is insignificant beside your own benefit.

The prince studies her in silence, then turns toward the shuddering doors. His jaw tightens as hoofbeats halt outside, and the reliquary’s violet veins loosen their grip.

the exiled prince

Then let them claim it. If my death buys their safety, I will name them its inheritors.

He extends the black reliquary toward the entrance. The Lady Eudora moves behind him, her wand’s spiraling blade sliding soundlessly from beneath her cloak.

She drives the blade into his back. The prince stiffens, releases the reliquary, and collapses dead across the bare floor as violet light flares.

The reliquary rolls once before Eudora’s clawed hand closes around it. Its power floods into her through the casing, cold and potent, while the doors burst inward.

“I grin and sheathe my wand. "Your cooperation is most appreciated, your highness. Rest assured, your life is going to a good cause." My hands flex tighter around the casing of the reliquary, dark magic breathing through my palms and siphoning the reliquary of all its power. Once it is completely depleted, I toss it aside like used garbage.”

Your cooperation is most appreciated, your highness. Rest assured, your life is going to a good cause.

The Lady Eudora grins and sheaths her wand. Her clawed hands tighten around the black reliquary as dark magic pours through her palms, drawing out its violet radiance.

The casing grows cold and dull beneath her grip. Violet veins fade one by one, while the reliquary's stolen power streams into Eudora until the last pulse dies.

The relic is empty.

With its magic completely depleted, the black reliquary becomes ordinary dead weight. Eudora tosses it aside, and it clatters across the floor beside the prince's body.

You murdered him, drained the relic, and cast it away like refuse! Guards! In the name of every living god, stop her!

Beyond the shattered doorway, armed figures dismount amid stamping hooves. Inside, the patrons scatter from Eudora, leaving the dead prince and empty reliquary between her and the entrance.

“I walk confidently toward the approaching figures dismounting from their steeds. "Good morrow to you all. Lovely for you to stop by." Mid-stride, I strike out one palm and a burst of dark magic flashes for the nearest man to instantly kill him by burning through his armor. "Consider yourselves greatly special. You die by the hands of the greatest witch in the world."”

Good morrow to you all. Lovely for you to stop by.

The Lady Eudora walks confidently through the ruined doorway. A broad-shouldered middle-aged man in battered iron armor dismounts nearest her, his red-plumed helm framing a square, weathered face, while other riders turn toward the inn.

Mid-stride, Eudora thrusts out one palm. A burst of dark magic flashes across the threshold and burns through the nearest man's armor; he collapses lifeless beside his steed. The spell cracks like thunder through the village.

By the old gods, she killed a royal guard with one hand!

The magic gutters from Eudora's palm, leaving the skin blackened and smoking around her claws. The concrete price is immediate, but the fallen guard does not rise, and every remaining rider now stares at her in open terror.

Hold formation! Do not rush her. That is the witch from the old warnings.

“I scoff at the captain's warning. I continue walking until I'm directly on top of the scorched and ruined corpse of the dead guard I struck down. "Oh, don't be so dramatic. I'm harmless, can't you see?" With a practiced twirl, I unsheathe my wand, then cast Midnight Blitz in a wide berth to kill several of them in one go.”

“After casting the spell I take a moment to recognize the burn mark on my casting hand's palm. I examine it for a second, before concluding I will concern myself with it later. I watch as the riders quickly bound away from the inn on their mounts. "Leaving already? Oh, that's just pitiful."”
