The Captain steps forward just as before, but the relic answers him first. Its violet pulse thins to a hungry thread, and his eyes lock on it like a man starving at table.
He ignores the Hermit’s body on the stones. His hand rises, not to point, but to reach, fingers flexing toward the chest with a greed that does not look like his own.

The Captain of the Guard
Give it here. Now.
One of the Harbor Guards shifts in alarm. The Captain does not even glance back. Blood glistens on the wet stone, and the black seam inside the relic twitches wider for a breath.

The Captain of the Guard
No. Not yet. It is mine to secure. Mine to keep safe.
The words land wrong, possessive and feverish. The Captain’s jaw tightens as if he is hearing himself from far away, and the guards finally see the change written across his face.
Zia stands between the chest and the harbor gate while the captain’s duty slips sideways into hunger. The relic’s influence has not waited for a lock or a cell, it has already found a host.

“Restrain the guard captain, asking the other guards for assistance. Then I will use my medical knowledge to purge the corruption out of him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Zia moves first. Her gauntleted hand clamps the Captain’s wrist and turns it aside, locking his reach short of the chest.
The Captain snarls and strains, but her grip holds. His boots scrape on the wet stones, and the relic’s weak glow quivers in the open chest.

Zia
Help me hold him. The corruption is in him, not just the relic.
The Harbor Guards hesitate, then two step in at once, spear shafts crossing behind the Captain’s back to pin his shoulders.
Zia lowers him by force to one knee, steadying his head and exposing the fever-bright eyes to the sea air.
She works fast, fingers firm and practiced, pressing her healing knowledge into the bad pulse of the spell while the Captain shakes and mutters at the edge of hearing.

The Captain of the Guard
No, no... it is mine...

“Use my medical knowledge and divine magic to purge the corruption out of the town guard.”
SUCCESS (Superb Medicine, rolled +2)

Zia’s hands shift from restraint to healing. She sets two fingers at the Captain’s throat, then at his brow, and the strange pulse under his skin answers like a trapped tide.
Her divine power moves through him in cold, clean waves. The fever in his eyes breaks, and the whispering hunger in his body unknots with a visible shudder.

The Captain of the Guard
No... the voice...
The Captain inhales sharply. His grip slackens, his head lifts, and the desperate glare drains into stunned, human fear.
In the open chest, the relic gives one dull throb. The dark watery seam inside it tightens to a thread, then stills.

The Captain of the Guard
What did I do?
The Harbor Guards ease back half a step, spears still ready, watching Zia and the chest with fresh uncertainty.
“"The corruption took hold of you. I have released you from it's control. I will take this relic away so it can not corrupt you further."”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -3)

Zia rises from the Captain’s knee and eases the relic chest closer with one armored hand. Her voice stays low and steady as she names the corruption for what it is, and the open water around the pier seems to hush around the words.

The Captain of the Guard
Then it was real. The hunger, the voice... it was not mine.
He swallows hard, staring at the chest instead of the blood on the stones. One hand trembles toward the rim, then stops, as if he fears touching it will wake the whisper again.

The Captain of the Guard
If it stays here, it will find another throat.
Zia takes the chest away from him. The relic leaves the Captain’s reach at last, but the motion drags a cold ache through her forearm, like the thing resents being carried cleanly.

The Captain of the Guard
Take it, then. Leave my harbor with it... before I decide I was wrong to spare you.
The Harbor Guards do not move to stop her. They only watch, pale and wary, as the Captain drags in a raw breath and looks up with the stripped, grateful shame of a man who has seen his own weakness.
