As Zia turns from First Landing Harbor, the armory chest answers her steps with a low hum. Iron bands along its lid bloom in a sickly violet sheen, and the sound shivers through her plate like a prayer spoken through bone.
The Hermit, still under guard behind her, lifts his head. His stare fixes on the chest as if it has called his name.

The Hermit
You feel it now, do you? Not a curse. A gate.

The Hermit
Your god hungers through it. Blood wakes what faith can only wake halfway.
The Captain of the Guard stiffens at the words, one hand tightening on his spear. The harbor guards shift in a wary half-circle, suddenly less sure of the chest than of the man who named it.

Zia
The hermit knows what is inside.
The violet glow deepens for a heartbeat, then steadies, as if something within the box has heard the accusation and approved.

Stabilize the relic’s awakening
“I will open the box and inspect the relic”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Zia thumbs the chest latch open. The violet hum jumps under her gauntlet, and the lid grudgingly parts a finger’s width before the glow inside flares hard enough to paint her visor.
A breath of cold, salt-stiff light spills out. Inside, the relic sits wrapped in shadow and mist, its surface slick with moving violet veins, as if something beneath it is trying to wake.

Zia
It is not resting. It is bound.
The glow catches on the rim of the chest and gutters, then stutters wider. For one heartbeat, Zia sees a narrow seam of black water threaded through the light, like a route or vein leading inward.

The Captain of the Guard
Hold it there. Do not let that thing breathe any more than it already has.
His men tighten their ring at the road’s edge, spears angled but not yet advancing. Behind them, the Hermit strains against restraint and laughs once, breathless and sharp.

The Hermit
There. It opens to the one it wants. Blood will finish what your hands cannot.
The relic’s pulse answers him with a deeper thrum, and the violet sheen crawls higher over the iron bands, waiting for a choice.
“Take my trident and stab it through the hermits neck, dragging him over and using his blood to quench the relic.”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Zia moves before the warning can settle. Her trident snaps forward through the gap in the guards’ ring, and the Hermit jerks as the shaft drives true. The shout dies in his throat.
Blood darkens the wet stone in a quick spill. Zia hauls him just enough to angle the strike toward the open chest, and the violet glow recoils with a hiss.
The black seam inside the relic shudders, then thins. Violet light gutters lower, no longer flaring at the rim of the chest.

The Captain of the Guard
By the sea... What have you done?
His spear lowers a fraction, not in trust, but in shock. The harbor guards freeze, staring at the chest, then at Zia, then at the still Hermit.

The Hermit
No... that was the key...
