The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol stumbles into Oakhaven’s dusty square, the side gate swinging wide behind her. The quiet feels wrong after the market, like the town is holding its breath.

By the fountain stands a red-haired man, icy blue eyes half-lidded with interest. His fingers trace small circles in the air, and the shadows around Pistol tug toward them like iron filings.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Easy, little wraith. If I meant harm, you would already know it.

The shadow spill in Pistol’s hands flickers, then tightens instead of bursting. The man’s smirk deepens, but his stance stays loose, not predatory.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You have a bounty on you, yes? I can smell the kind of trouble that leaves paper behind.

From the lane, Stabby McStabbson peeks out, bristling. The red-haired man glances at the goblin once, then back to Pistol, his expression turning openly useful.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Name’s Delfarius. If you want out of Oakhaven clean, keep moving with me. I know a route the guard does not.

Understand the bounty

He is pulling my shadows to him?

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol’s shadows answer her question before the man does, slipping off her hands and reaching toward him in thin, testing threads.

Delfarius lifts two fingers, and the dark bends around them as if caught on an unseen hook. The pull is deliberate, measured, almost careful.

Pistol

Pistol

He is drawing them in.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Not stealing, little wraith. Listening. Your magic is loud.

Stabby McStabbson’s ears flatten at the lane mouth. He clutches the edge of the stone and glares, ready to spring if the stranger twitches wrong.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The gate is open, and the guard will come back with friends. Come with me, or stand here and be found.

The shadows around Pistol settle back into her control, but they keep leaning toward Delfarius like they recognize a path. He waits, hand low, expression unreadable now.

"Ok uh I'm Pistol or at least I think that is my name. Stabby found me. He's my family...or at least the only family I know." I smile a big grin

SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -1)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger
Pistol

Pistol

Okay, I am Pistol, or at least I think that is my name. Stabby found me. He is my family, or at least the only family I know.

Pistol’s grin lands bright and crooked in the sun. Her shadows loosen, no longer reaching, just gathering close around her fingers like they are listening too.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Pistol, then. And Stabby McStabbson, apparently the sort of friend who bites paper for you.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby friend. Protect. Also hungry.

Delfarius’s mouth twitches at that. He dips his head toward the goblin, then back to Pistol, as if weighing both of them and finding them real.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I can work with family. If you come with me, I keep you moving and keep asking questions later.

The open gate yawns behind them, sun catching on the fountain’s wet stone. Stabby stays braced at the lane mouth, but he does not lunge.

Pistol

Pistol

He does not look surprised by any of it.

Delfarius

Delfarius

So, Pistol, do you want my help, or do you want me to walk away?

"I will take help. Oh and candy if you have some!"

SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +0)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol’s words land in the sunlit square. Delfarius’s eyebrows lift, then settle into that same faint, knowing curve.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Help, yes. Candy, maybe. You do know how to negotiate.

He reaches into his sleeve and lets a wrapped sweet drop into his palm, then holds it out where Pistol can take it. Stabby shifts at the gate, still watching, but he does not rush in.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I am not asking you to trust me all at once. Just enough to walk ten minutes farther than the men looking for you.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Ten minutes. Then decide.

The fountain murmurs behind them. Delfarius keeps his hand steady, candy waiting, eyes on Pistol as if the next step belongs to her.

I pop the candy in my mouth then follow the guy that just gave me candy. Stabby follows wary of the grown man that just gave candy to a child and is leading them away into a shadowed alleyway.

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol pops the sweet into her mouth and falls in beside Delfarius as he turns from the gate. Stabby pads after them, keeping to the wall, eyes fixed on the man ahead.

Delfarius leads them across the dusty square and into a narrow alley, where the sunlight thins to a blade above their heads. The fountain’s sparkle drops away behind them.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Good. Stay close, both of you. The alley bends to a passage the guards do not favor.

Pistol

Pistol

The stone here is damp. The alley smells colder than the square.

Stabby slows at the mouth of the alley, then commits, staying a pace behind Pistol and a pace behind that easy smile of Delfarius’s. The little goblin’s shoulders stay tight.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Ten minutes. Watching.

Ahead, the passage opens toward a darker turn. Delfarius lifts one hand, guiding, and the shadowed way swallows the three of them.

"Do you know who my daddy is? I saw a man that told me to study...I don't have anything to study." Stabby watches the stranger that knew his name without Stabby telling him his name...

Pistol

Pistol

Do you know who my daddy is? I saw a man who told me to study... I don't have anything to study.

Delfarius stops mid-step and looks back over his shoulder. Stabby keeps to the wall, but his ears prick at the words.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Your father is not the point. The man you saw was looking for that shape of yours, not your name.

Delfarius

Delfarius

He wanted you watched, measured, and used before you learned what you are.

Stabby’s jaw tightens. He studies Delfarius as if weighing the stranger’s face against the answer.

Pistol

Pistol

He knows more than he said before.

Delfarius

Delfarius

As for study, I can give you a page, or three, but not here. The last thing I need is a guard finding us with a lesson in hand.

He slips a folded scrap of parchment into Pistol’s hand, then adds a small silver sweet from his palm with the same easy smile. The price lands as well, a near whisper of shadow at his sleeve, like something useful spent to keep the air between them soft.

+ New Item Acquired

Folded parchment

+ New Item Acquired

Silver sweet

"OOh more candy!" I eat the other piece and put the parchment away. Stabby demands answers by asking the stranger by saying stab stab stabby.

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +3)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol pops the sweet into her mouth, and the silver shell cracks to cool sugar at her tongue. She folds the parchment once, twice, then tucks it away before the alley can steal another glance. Beside her, Stabby straightens, suddenly far less interested in shadows than in answers.

Pistol

Pistol

Ooh, more candy!

Delfarius’s eyebrow lifts at the tiny burst of delight. He watches Pistol stash the paper with a look that says he noticed the speed of her hands, not just the sweetness of the gift.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Stab, stab, Stabby! Stab stab?

The goblin points two claws at Delfarius, then jabs his own chest, demanding the stranger explain himself without a single wasted breath. A few crumbs from the torn bounty scrap still cling to his teeth.

Delfarius

Delfarius

A fair question. I am not your hunter, little goblin. I am the man trying to keep the one they marked from walking into a worse net.

Delfarius

Delfarius

He glances at the hidden parchment, then back to Pistol, as if measuring how much she can bear.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The bounty was placed by someone with court reach. Not a street ganger, not a border captain. Someone who pays for a name to vanish before it learns to speak.

He tilts his head toward the alley mouth, then opens his palm. Another thin shard of shadow curls there, this one forming the brief shape of a sealed signet before it melts away. He has shown his hand just enough to be useful, and just enough to be dangerous.

how did you do that? Can I do that?

FAILURE (Good Arcana, rolled -3)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger
Pistol

Pistol

How did you do that? Can I learn it?

Pistol’s question hangs between them. The shadow in Delfarius’s palm thins, then coils back into his sleeve like smoke finding a hidden crack.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You can learn the shape of it. The trick is not forcing shadow, it is asking it to answer.

Delfarius

Delfarius

And as for the signet, that was not a spell. It was a reading. Court wax, old habit, and a lie someone keeps pressing flat with expensive fingers.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Stab? Stabby... stab?

The goblin lowers one claw, but only a little. He glances from Delfarius to Pistol, then makes a suspicious little chewing motion, as if the answer tastes unfinished.

Delfarius

Delfarius

If you want, I can show you the first step. Not here, not loudly, and not for free.

He turns his open hand upward between them, patient and unhurried, leaving the offer there for Pistol to take or leave.

"This place sucks we should probaly not be here It smells too much like people that think they don't stink. Can we go somewhere else?" I crunch down on my candy in my mouth

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Pistol

Pistol

This place sucks. We should not be here. Can we go somewhere else?

Pistol bites down on the candy with a hard crunch. Sugar and dust snap on her tongue, and the alley seems to lean in around her complaint.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Yes. That is sensible, and I am glad you said it aloud. There is less risk where people do not brag with their noses in the air.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Stab. Less stink. Good.

Delfarius inclines his head toward the deeper dark beyond the alley mouth, his open hand still waiting. Stabby edges closer to Pistol’s heel, still wary, while the last bit of candy disappears under her teeth.

Delfarius

Delfarius

There is a quieter lane two turns away. If you choose to walk with me, I will keep the city from noticing you for a little while longer.

Stabby pauses mid-chew, then hides the ruined scrap of the bounty notice deeper in his pocket as if it offends him to keep it visible. The offer hangs there, simple and dangerous, waiting on Pistol’s answer.

Pistol leaves narrow, dark alleyway behind and arrives at a quieter lane.

Ok? I guess. I pet my squirel as we walk to where the shadow man said is safe.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +2)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

The lane opens into a hush of cobbles and leaning stone, far quieter than the alley behind them. Pistol walks at Delfarius’s side, one hand absently stroking her mechanical squirrel as its little joints click under her fingers. The air smells of wet mortar and night-blooming herbs.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Good. This stretch is easier on the ears. Keep close, and the city will be less curious.

Stabby pads along on the other side of Pistol, chewing on the last ugly scraps of the bounty notice tucked in his fist. He keeps glancing ahead, but his shoulders loosen by a fraction.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Still stink. Better stink. Hm.

Delfarius slows beneath a bent lantern and lets his hand fall, then gestures toward a shadowed archway draped in ivy. Purple light leaks from somewhere farther in, faint as a bruise.

Delfarius

Delfarius

There. The lane bends into a place I can keep hidden. You may decide whether that means refuge, or conversation.

Pistol’s squirrel nestles warm against her palm, and the path ahead settles into two choices, one safe and one honest.

Oooh purple light! I run towards the purple light.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +0)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger

Pistol breaks into a run, and the purple glow answers her with a sudden spill of light over the cobbles. The ivy rustles as she reaches the archway, her squirrel thumping against her palm.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Easy, Pistol. That light is mine, and it is not a trap.

She reaches the threshold first. Beyond the arch, a tucked-away court opens under stone, and the purple shine comes from a warded door set into the far wall.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Pistol, stop. That guy smell wrong.

Delfarius does not look back at the goblin. He lifts one hand, and the shadows at the door twitch like they recognize him.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The bounty was signed by someone in Tarmonia. I can show you which hand carried the seal.

Pistol

Pistol

"Show me."

The ward brightens, and a signet mark blooms in the purple glow. Stabby snarls around a shred of paper, while Delfarius waits for Pistol's answer, calm as a drawn blade.

Stop stabby, he smells like jasmine..and roses. I put my hand on the shiney purple light...oooh pretty

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger
Pistol

Pistol

Stop, Stabby. He smells like jasmine and roses.

Pistol catches the goblin by the front of his shredded scraps, holding him still while she reaches toward the ward. The purple light slicks over her fingers like cold glass.

Her hand touches the shine, and the seal flares under her palm. A thin pulse runs up her arm, sweet and sharp, like a hidden door just unlocked.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Hrrk. Bad pretty magic.

The ward answers with a quick burst of violet sparks. Pistol’s shadows leak between her knuckles, and the signet mark sharpens, clear enough to read by touch and light.

Delfarius

Delfarius

There. That is the hand behind the seal.

The glow dims to a steady pulse, but the court has heard them now. Stabby wriggles in Pistol’s grip, and Delfarius’s calm smile thins as the seal keeps shining on her hand.

Pistol lets the light sit under her gaze, and the flare settles into lines instead of glare. The signet is not just a mark, it is a key, a house seal pressed over a hidden ward.

Pistol

Pistol

It points to a noble house... Tarmonia.

The purple sheen tightens into a readable pattern, names folded into the craft of it. Whoever set this door is not guessing about Pistol, they are tracing her through court hands.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Now you see why I brought you here. The seal answers to influence, not rumor.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Big smell. Bad rich danger.

Stabby bares his teeth at the ward and clutches the torn scraps tighter, while the glow keeps pulsing against Pistol's palm like a heartbeat.

Delfarius

That mark belongs to Tarmonia's court. Someone there placed the bounty, and someone there expects you to come looking.

The Shadow Weaver and the Stranger
Pistol

Pistol

That is a trap, isn't it?

Pistol tips her head and sniffs the warding seam the way Stabby does, slow and sharp. The purple light catches at the edge of a narrow scratch hidden in the stonework.

The scratch is fresh, cut across older dust, and a thread of spell soot clings to it. It is not a door flaw, it is a placed mark, the kind left to trigger a hidden snare or warning.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Yes. Sneaky rich trap.

Stabby leans in, nostrils flaring, then jerks his chin toward the floor stones. His torn scraps rustle in his grip as he points at a hairline seam under the glow.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Good eyes. That mark is meant to be touched, but not by the careless.

Delfarius straightens, the half-smile fading. He watches Pistol more than the door now, as if measuring whether she noticed the same hidden mechanism he did.

The seal keeps shining, but the court beyond it feels less like shelter and more like a mouth held open on purpose.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You were meant to notice it first. Touching it simply proved you can read what others miss.

Delfarius steps closer, voice low and even. His gaze flicks to the glowing signet, then back to Pistol, as if the answer matters less than her reaction to it.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Sneaky rich man talks too much.

Stabby hovers at Pistol's side, ears tight, but the alarm in his face eases into grudging curiosity. He still keeps the shredded bounty scraps clutched in one hand.

Delfarius

Delfarius

That ward is a court latch. The mark is not for keeping people out, it is for calling the right eyes to it. Someone in Tarmonia wants this place seen.

He lets that land, then tilts his head toward Pistol's hand, where the seal's light still lingers on her fingers like frost.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I am not here to trap you in the dark. I am here because your hunter already knows the dark belongs to you.

Pistol

Huh?

Delfarius

Delfarius

Not the dark, you. Whoever hunts you knows how to follow shadow, and what shadow answers to.

His calm slips at the edges, just enough to show calculation. Stabby pauses mid-chew on a scrap of paper, eyes narrowing as he listens.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I brought you here because the ward wakes only for what is already marked. That makes you useful to them, and dangerous to me.

Stabby McStabbson

Stabby McStabbson

Ha. See? Sneaky rich man. Talks like trap with shoes.

The ward’s light catches on Pistol’s fingers, then gutters once. A pinch of cold soreness settles in her palm where the glow touched her.

Delfarius

Delfarius

If you want the clean version, no. I am not rescuing you out of kindness. I am measuring who reaches you first.

But you gave me candy? And you know how to use shadows too. and you said you would teach me some more magic.

Delfarius lets the silence sit a moment, then his mouth quirks. The ward’s purple shimmer crawls over the cracked stone between them, while Stabby keeps chewing, crumbs of torn paper clinging to his lip.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I did. I still might. Those are not the same as trust.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The sweet was bait, yes. A polite one. I wanted to see whether you bite at gifts, or at lies.

He lifts his hand, palm open, and a thin thread of shadow flickers over his fingers like smoke in a draft. Stabby’s eyes dart from the magic to Pistol, his jaw finally still.

Delfarius

Delfarius

As for teaching, I meant it. Someone is hunting a shadow weaver. I would rather shape the lesson than watch the lesson become your grave.

Pistol

Pistol

His candy and his shadows are both real.
