The arch yawns beneath the eastern road, its old stones sweating dark moisture. Arya still holds the rootling as the deeper rhythm rolls through the passage, while Edric follows close and the settlement gatekeeper watches from the road with his spear ready.

Faint carvings emerge around the arch as the vibration passes: narrow symbols worn smooth by water, forming terms of an ancient agreement between the road and whatever once traveled beneath it.

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The road promised passage. The traveler promised silence. Neither promise survives the hunger below.

Edric Vale

Those marks are older than the mound's prophecy. Can you read them, Arya, or are they merely warning us to turn back?

The rootling's amber eye follows the carvings instead of the dark passage. Beneath Arya's grip, its twig-thin frame trembles, and the stones answer with a second, heavier pulse.

The Settlement Gatekeeper

The Settlement Gatekeeper

I remain here with the gate barred. If that thing comes out, I will sound the bell again. Do not let the passage close behind you.

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The Sleeper beneath the mound is already below us. The deeper hunger follows its trail, and it has learned the road's name.

“I study the ancient agreement's carvings”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)

Arya studies the carvings through the shifting damp, tracing each worn groove with her eyes rather than her injured shoulder. Keen Senses separate water-slick scratches from deliberate symbols.

Her reasoning joins repeated terms across the arch: passage was granted only to a traveler who carried no hunger into the living lands. The agreement names silence as restraint, not secrecy.

Arya

Arya

The road was not made for the hunger. It was bound to keep it contained.

Edric Vale

You found the distinction, didn't you? The traveler was permitted passage, but the hunger violates the agreement simply by following its trail.

A final cluster of symbols resolves beneath the water film: when the pact is broken, the road must close before the traveler reaches warm ground. The eastern gate lies beyond this arch.

Then you know the road's duty. Seal the passage before the hunger reaches the settlement, or the agreement ends with every living root.

Stop the deeper hunger before it reaches the settlement

“I study the carvings for the way to seal the passage.”

Arya studies the carvings again, following their water-filled grooves with Keen Senses. She catches every change in pressure and scratch, but the symbols refuse to settle into a complete sequence.

Her Oath of Vengeance narrows the question toward one urgent answer: how to keep the hunger from the settlement. That purpose makes the warning seem like an instruction, and the distinction slips away.

The rootling shrinks beneath Arya’s feared reputation, its amber eye turning aside whenever she leans closer. Its movement blocks one crucial groove, and she cannot tell whether the final mark means bind or release.

Arya traces the apparent closing sequence. The arch answers with a deep grind, and several stones slide inward, narrowing the passage while leaving the central seam stubbornly open.

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

You closed the road around itself, not around the hunger. It can still follow the Sleeper through the seam.

Edric Vale

The passage is smaller, but not sealed. Whatever you changed, it has bought us a barrier, not an ending.

The failed reading leaves the arch partially constricted and the true closing mark hidden behind the displaced stones. The hunger’s distant pulse presses against the remaining seam.

“I study the carvings for the way to seal the passage.”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)

Arya studies the carvings without touching the unstable stones. Keen Senses separate water-slick scratches from deliberate grooves, revealing a sequence hidden beneath the displaced arch stones.

Her Oath of Vengeance drives her past broader questions toward the one necessary answer: where the hunger must be denied. That urgency focuses her reading instead of scattering it.

The final marks resolve into three commands: silence the road, turn the traveler, close the seam. Arya recognizes the rootling’s earlier mistake and finds the hidden stroke beneath its shifting frame.

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The Small Root-Limbed Creature

The mark was beneath me. You have found the road’s true order.

Arya traces the commands in sequence. The carvings drink the moisture from the stones; the passage falls silent, its pressure turning inward as the central seam draws shut.

The last stone settles flush with the arch. The hunger’s pulse vanishes beyond it, while the Sleeper’s retreating rhythm fades into the buried roads and leaves the settlement untouched.

Edric Vale

A complete seal. You read an agreement older than the prophecy, Arya, and made the road obey it.
