Edric Vale
Edric Vale

The forest thins around an overgrown burial mound, its old stones split by roots. From the open entrance, a young adult man staggers into view, noble-born despite his torn blue coat and mud-streaked silver clasp. Blood darkens one sleeve.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

Please. Do not let it see me. My name is Edric Vale, and I swear I came seeking only the merchant's treasure.

Behind him, the chamber yawns black beneath hanging ivy. No treasure glitters within. Beneath the churned soil near the threshold, a single buried object pulses with a cold, pale light.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

The chest was already gone. This remained, hidden under the earth, and now it shines exactly as the prophecy warned.

A tremor passes through the mound. Dust sifts from the stones, and something deep inside answers the glow with a slow, heavy knock.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

I only understand half of it. The buried light wakes what sleeps below, and the path out crosses the ground where you stand.

Edric, his lean frame topped by dark wavy hair and a sharp-featured face marked by a split lower lip stops several paces away, pale beneath the grime, one hand pressed to his bleeding sleeve. Behind him, the mound gives another deliberate knock.

“I pull Edric away from the mound's entrance to bandage his arm.”

Arya catches Edric by the uninjured arm and pulls him from the mound’s entrance. His wary glance shows her feared reputation makes him stiffen, but he follows without resisting.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

Gently. I can walk. I am not about to flee from the woman who just saved me.

Beyond the roots, Arya lays him against a broad stone. Her keen senses catch the cleanest tear in his sleeve and the faint warmth of blood beneath it, avoiding the worst of the fabric.

She opens her field pouch, while the silver crucifix at her throat rests against her knuckles, its familiar weight keeping the bandage roll from slipping as the mound shudders behind them.

The feared edge of her presence makes Edric hold still rather than question her rough efficiency. Arya binds the arm firmly, packing the cloth where the bleeding is heaviest.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

That is better. Whatever watches from below, I would rather face it standing than leak into the soil.

The bandage holds. Edric stands beside Arya, pale but steady, while the buried light continues pulsing beneath the mound’s threshold.

“I ask Edric what exactly this prophecy is and if whatever creature lives below is afraid of it.”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

Arya

Arya

What exactly is this prophecy, Edric? And is whatever lives below afraid of it?

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

It is called the Pale Road prophecy. When the buried light wakes, the Sleeper beneath the old roads will rise and follow it toward the nearest living settlement.

Arya listens past Edric’s frightened voice, catching the rhythm beneath the mound: each heavy knock follows the buried light’s pulse, but the thing never answers twice the same way.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

Afraid? I do not know. The prophecy says the Sleeper recoils from the light, yet it also says the light is its summons. Those words do not belong together.

Edric’s wary stiffness, sharpened by her feared reputation, makes him choose every word carefully. Arya’s keen senses catch the truth beneath that caution: he has read the prophecy, but not understood its oldest passage.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

The cost of knowing more was time. I spent hours translating the final lines while the light woke beneath me. I still cannot tell whether it calls the Sleeper or warns it away.

The mound knocks again, softer this time. Arya has the prophecy’s warning and its contradiction, but the buried light continues pulsing before either of them can test which meaning is true.

“I inspect the buried light without touching it”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -3)

Arya crouches beyond the threshold and studies the buried light without touching it. Her keen senses separate its cold radiance from the mound’s damp earth and the faint warmth of Edric’s blood nearby.

The pulse resists a simple pattern. Each flare briefly reveals hair-thin lines beneath the soil, then erases them before Arya can follow their direction.

She narrows her attention to the space around the glow. The air bends toward it, but the buried light casts no shadow, leaving its purpose unreadable.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

Do you see something? The old translation said the light would show a road.

On the next pulse, the pale glow folds inward. The lines beneath the soil vanish, and a thin crust of gray earth seals over the light without any visible hand touching it.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

That is not in the prophecy. It has hidden itself.

The mound falls silent. Arya has gained no clear meaning from the inspection, and the sealed patch now gives neither light nor pattern to study. Beneath it, something shifts once.

Arya studies the sealed patch without touching it. Her keen senses catch a faint warmth beneath the gray crust, distinct from the mound’s cold earth, while the pulse leaves a pressure-mark in her awareness.

She follows the pressure through the soil by its timing rather than its light. It traces a narrow line away from the mound, bending toward the eastern trees and the distant trading path.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

You found the road? Then the prophecy was not speaking of stone.

The buried light has revealed its route: not a road beneath the mound, but a hidden direction carried through the earth. The knowledge costs Arya several silent minutes, and the fading pressure leaves its final distance uncertain.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

East leads toward the settlements. If the Sleeper follows that path, we cannot wait here.

Under Arya’s attention, the gray crust remains sealed. Yet beneath it, the pulse has turned eastward, steady enough to track for now, while the mound gives one muted answering knock.

Arya follows the pressure east, keeping one palm near the soil without touching the sealed patch. Her Keen Senses catch each faint warmth beneath the roots, while Survival guides her around loose stones and deadfall.

The hidden route threads between dark pines, crosses a shallow runnel, and emerges at an old game trail pointing directly toward the distant trading path and its settlements.

A thorned branch snags Arya's cloak as she descends the bank. She tears free, but the branch scrapes her forearm and leaves a thin line of blood.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

There. The pressure is stronger. You have found where the hidden road joins the living one.

Arya reaches the trading path. Beneath its packed earth, the pressure-mark runs east toward the nearest settlement, steady and unmistakable. The Sleeper's route is no longer uncertain.

Edric Vale

Edric Vale

We can warn them now. Whatever the Sleeper follows, it is heading straight for people.

“I warn the nearest settlement immediately”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Arya follows the pressure east at once, emerging onto the settlement’s outer path. Her feared reputation makes her approach feel like a challenge, but Keen Senses catch the Sleeper’s route beneath the packed earth.

Arya

Arya

The Sleeper beneath the mound is following this path. Warn everyone and bar the eastern road.

At the gate, a broad-shouldered middle-aged man in a faded green surcoat steps from the watch shelter, one gray braid hanging beside his weathered face. Arya’s presence makes his hand tighten around his spear.

The Settlement Gatekeeper

The Settlement Gatekeeper

You chose a grim hour to arrive. Speak plainly, forest woman. What follows the road?

Arya

Arya

A Sleeper beneath the old mound. Its path runs under this road toward your homes.

Tomas studies her without lowering the spear, then hears the faint pressure beneath the road and sees Edric’s bloodied sleeve behind her. Arya’s composure falters for one visible breath, the strain of forcing belief through fear.

The Settlement Gatekeeper

The Settlement Gatekeeper

Ring the warning bell. Shut the eastern way. I believe you, and I will make the settlement listen.

Tomas turns and raises the alarm. The bell begins to toll across the settlement, while Edric exhales beside Arya and the hidden pressure continues east beneath the guarded road.
