Waylan stays low behind the split sapling as the damp green haze curls around him. The blackened bark makes a narrow shield, and the clearing feels hushed, almost listening.

Can you aid me? And why was her mother taken captive?

Rae Olson Daughter

I can help, if the forest allows it. As for her mother, the hunters wanted leverage, or a guide, or both. People with chains rarely need only one reason.

The Bound Mother

The Bound Mother

Her shoulders tremble, but her eyes stay fixed on Rae, then Waylan, hopeful and wary.

Rae lowers one hand to the sapling’s cracked roots, studying the dark residue with a hard little frown. The leaves around them barely stir now, holding the veil steady.

The sapling is still bleeding magic into the soil.

This tree is what I am using, yes. It is wounded, but it can hide us a little longer. If you want cover, stay close to the trunk and do not let your boots leave the moss.

The Bound Mother

The Bound Mother

If there is a path out after this, I will take it. Until then, I am staying where the forest keeps me quiet.

Waylan keeps still in the moss, arrow nocked low and half-hidden by the blackened roots. The green haze clings thick around the clearing, and every fern frond seems to hold its breath.

The sapling was struck by blight before the hunters came. They followed the trail of sickness, then took the Bound Mother when they found her tending it.

The Bound Mother

The Bound Mother

I was not their target at first. I was the one who knew where the roots were failing.

Rae’s hand tightens on the cracked bark, and the residue at the roots gives off a faint, sour pulse. Somewhere beyond the veil, a branch snaps under careful feet.

Rae Olson Daughter

If they are close enough to hear that, they are close enough to test my ward. Stay low.

Waylan settles the arrow into a steadier line, sighting down the last trail through the underbrush. The clearing does not reveal the hunters yet, but the hush shifts, as if something is parting the leaves outside the haze.

Waylan looses the arrow into the dark beyond the veil. It skips through branches with a sharp crack, then vanishes deeper in the brush, carrying the sound away from the clearing.

His left hand slides the hunting knife free as he keeps low in the moss. Rae does not break her grip on the sapling, but her eyes flick once toward him, reading the signal.

The shot is far enough to pull them off the trail.

I see it. Keep your head down.

The green haze tightens, then thins for a heartbeat. Through that slit, the Bound Mother sees the hunters first, and her breath catches as recognition hits her face.

The Bound Mother

The Bound Mother

No... they came for me because I knew the signet.

Outside the veil, voices gather in the brush, too close now for comfort. Rae shifts her stance over the blackened roots, ready to answer the next step from the trees or from Waylan.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn why the hunters want the signet

You pull off the tree walking lightly in the moss as you ask her if she has the signet or a weapon to help defend each other. You wait patiently as you try to make out how many enemies are on the now long forgotten trail

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -4)

Waylan eases off the sapling’s cover, sliding one careful step through the moss. He keeps his knife low and his shoulders loose, but the dark beyond the veil stays stubbornly blurred to him.

Waylan Grey

Do you have the signet, or a weapon, to help defend us?

The Bound Mother swallows hard and twists against her bindings, trying to see past Rae’s ward. The hunters’ shapes remain broken by leaves and haze, more movement than count.

The Bound Mother

I have neither. They took the ring, and when I knew its mark, they started asking about the roots.

That answer lands like a snapped twig. Rae’s gaze sharpens on the blackened sapling, then flicks toward the hidden trail, as if the corruption and the pursuit are suddenly the same wound.

Waylan peers harder into the brush, but the veil and the leaves fold the hunters into one shifting mass. He cannot make out a clean number, only that they are close enough to hear the clearing breathe.

Rae Olson Daughter

They are not here by chance. If they carry that signet, they know what failed here.

The green haze trembles at the edge of the clearing, thin as breath on glass, while the unseen hunters keep edging nearer.
