Waylan Grey crests the ridge east of the river crossing and stops short. A rough wall of earth and stone chokes the path ahead, fresh enough to stink of turned clay.

Below, in the brush, a High Elf envoy in pale travel-cloak grips a bound woman by the arm and hauls her toward the shadows. Two guards stand wide, blades out, eyes raking the slope.

The captive twists hard against her bindings, boots skidding in wet leaf-mold. She catches sight of the ridge and tries to shout through the cloth at her mouth.

One guard snaps his head toward the crest. The envoy hisses, low and urgent, and jerks the woman deeper under the branches.

Quiet. If anyone sees her, we lose the road.

The Bound Mother

The Bound Mother

Mmph!

A gust stirs the leaves, carrying the scrape of stone and the faint clink of steel. The hidden crossing feels one breath away from discovery.

Can I reach the cover of the brush before the guards spot me on the ridge?

The wind is masking my movement, and the thicket to the west offers a clear, unseen path to the brush line.

A narrow gap in the rocks provides a perfect, shielded route that leads directly into the dense undergrowth where the captives are held.

I wait and watch the guards’ pattern

Waylan settles into the rock shadow and studies the crossing. Guard One paces three steps, stops to scan the ridge, then takes the outer side of the trail. Guard Two stays closer to the brush line, watching the bound woman and the gap behind him.

The envoy keeps his shoulders turned between Waylan and the captive, using his own body as cover. He shifts his grip, and the woman is dragged a pace deeper toward the thicket.

A pebble slips under Waylan’s boot and clicks against stone.

Guard Two

Guard Two

Did you hear that?

Guard One

Guard One

Keep moving. If anyone is up there, they are late.

Waylan has the pattern now, the outer guard sweeps wide, the inner guard guards the brush, and the envoy uses each pause to hide her body from the ridge.

The woman twists against her bindings, and the envoy hauls her hard toward the dark mouth of the gap in the rocks.

Is the mother trying to signal help?

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 58)

The Bound Mother catches Waylan's gaze from the ridge, her eyes widening in a desperate plea for help, but the envoy jerks her head back before she can make a sound.

I slip down the hidden path

Waylan slips down the hidden path in silence, boots finding the damp rock and brush. The ridge falls away behind him, and the kidnappers are suddenly only a few strides off in the thicket.

Below, the fresh earth wall still scars the trail, but the gap in the stones now frames the captive like a mouth about to close. The Bound Mother twists against her bindings, and the envoy’s hand clamps harder over her shoulder.

Guard Two

Guard Two

There. I heard movement. Someone is in the brush!

The Envoy

The Envoy

Keep your voices down. Move her now, before anyone sees.

The nearer guard turns toward the gap, spear lifting as his suspicion sharpens into certainty. The secrecy around the abduction starts to crack.

Waylan Grey

Waylan Grey

I’m close enough to act.

The Mother’s gag muffles a frantic cry as the envoy drags her deeper into the brush, while the guards spread to block the trail. Waylan’s arrival has put the scene on the brink of exposure.

I stay hidden and aim at the envoy, sayin unhand her in a soft whisper. While pointing my bow at the arm of the guard

Waylan draws on the envoy from the brush, the bowstring steady in the hush. The threat is small and sharp, but it lands like a shouted command in the thicket.

Waylan Grey

Waylan Grey

Unhand her.

The envoy freezes, one hand still clamped on the captive, while the arrowhead shifts toward the guard’s arm. Guard One’s spear wavers as he spots the aim.

The Envoy

The Envoy

Do not shoot, scout. Step back and this can end cleanly.

The Bound Mother jerks against her bindings and the gag, making the struggle visible to anyone on the trail. The cover cracks open.

Guard Two

Guard Two

He’s here for the woman! Take him down!

From above, the ambush spreads in a hard triangle, Waylan at the hidden mouth of the path, the envoy braced over the captive, both guards fanning out with the river crossing and brush no longer hiding the scene.

Waylan closes the distance in a low, careful stride, bow still leveled at the guards. The mother is within reach now, and the trail behind her remains covered.

The Envoy

Stand down. If he looses, she is done.

Guard One checks his advance and shifts his spear aside, but Guard Two keeps moving, forced to choose between the arrow and the prisoner.

Guard Two

Guard Two

He cannot take her alive. Cut him off!

The Bound Mother stumbles toward Waylan, her shoulders jolting as the hold on her loosens under the pressure of the standoff.

The choke point is pinned.

The envoy’s cover is gone, and every eye on the trail now tracks the same choice, the woman, the bow, or the blade.

He staggers back from the trail edge, weapon faltering, while the captive pitches toward the safer side of the path.

Above them, the ridge gives Waylan the whole crossing at once, one guard clutching his ruined hand, one guard hesitating, and the envoy reaching too late.
