At the sprawl’s edge, corrugated shacks crowd around a sunken fight pit. The arena lights snap out, leaving only emergency strips and rain-slick neon.

Inside the ring, Mara Venn, a broad-shouldered middle-aged woman in a red armored coat with dark skin, cropped silver hair, a square scarred face, and a red armored coat marked by yellow hazard stripes, backs toward the mesh. Opposite her, a young adult man in shattered combat implants rises from a supposedly fatal fall.

Selene’s scanner floods with a government-grade weapons signature, buried beneath the fighter’s combatware. Its targeting lattice is active, cycling through the packed crowd.

A concealed receiver catches an encrypted distress ping from somewhere among the spectators. The packet carries a repair signature Selene recognizes immediately: Euran Cross.

“Kill the grid! Shut him down! I paid for a match, not a weapons trial!”

The fighter’s implants emit a thin, rising whine. Across the ring, Mara reaches for a black-market control wand, but its display flashes government authentication and rejects her.

The crowd surges toward the exits, jamming the narrow gates. Targeting reticles bloom across the dark, and the arena’s countdown begins at three seconds.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure Euran Cross's connection to the weapons trial

✓ Quest Accepted

Prevent the weaponized fighter from harming the crowd

“*I look at him. Hmm this is definitely the prototype I worked on. I know just the place to shut it down at. I leap on to the arena and sprint toward the attack. I slide under its legs and press a button in between his thighs hence shutting down the cyborg attacker.*”

Selene vaults the mesh as the countdown hits two. Rain beads on the arena floor while targeting lasers rake the fleeing crowd and the prototype pivots toward Euran’s distress signal.

She sprints straight into its firing lane, drops low, and slides beneath its towering legs. Her hand finds the recessed control point between its thighs, exactly where the prototype’s emergency architecture should be.

The button depresses, but the attacker’s stolen authentication rejects the shutdown command. Its leg servo catches Selene’s shoulder mid-slide, spinning her hard across the slick mat as the countdown reaches one.

“That was the maintenance port! You hit the wrong protocol!”

The failed command exposes a narrow diagnostic channel instead of stopping the machine. Selene sees the active targeting lattice is routing through Mara’s rejected control wand, not the prototype’s core.

“Use the wand! It still has my ring handshake, even if the system won’t obey me!”

The prototype’s weapon housings open. Selene remains on the arena floor, bruised but moving, with Mara’s wand skidding within reach and the diagnostic channel still blinking across her scanner.

SUCCESS (Good Security Systems, rolled +0)

Selene reaches the skidding wand before the prototype fires. She twists its cracked grip against the diagnostic port, forcing Mara’s ring handshake through the exposed channel.

The authentication lattice locks, then collapses. Weapon housings slam shut, targeting lasers vanish, and the cyborg attacker freezes above her with one knee buckling.

The shutdown backfeeds through the wand in a burst of heat. Selene’s palm blisters across the glove seam, and the wand’s display dies permanently in her grasp.

“You actually did it. Get clear before that thing remembers how to stand.”

The prototype folds heavily onto the mat, inert but intact. Emergency strips return, revealing rain, scattered weapons, and spectators pressed against the sealed gates.

“That wasn’t my rig. Someone buried a military brain inside it, and now they know this arena’s compromised.”

Beyond the mesh, Euran’s distress signal remains active among the fleeing crowd, weaker now but unmistakable beneath the arena’s rebooting alarms.
