Adventure of Naomi the Best Engineer with the worst HP

Cold shock snaps through Naomi Katsuragi as the hypersleep pod hisses open. Red emergency lights pulse over steel walls, and the whole chamber trembles with distant impact.

A synthesized voice booms from hidden speakers, clipped and urgent. Shipwide warning, gamma and alpha radiation spike detected. Hull shielding degrading.

Naomi swings her legs out of the pod, bare feet hitting the deck with a shiver. Her eyes catch a blinking console across the chamber, already packed with failing diagnostic readouts.

A second alarm cuts in, sharper than the first, while frost beads on the pod rim and the air smells of ozone. Somewhere deeper in the ship, bulkheads lock with a metallic thud.

The corridor outside flashes red as the chamber door starts to cycle open, but the emergency panel beside it spits a live routing map, and one branch is already going dark.

Naomi drives out of the chamber in a red blur, the corridor door hissing wider just long enough for her to slip through. Frost cracks under her bare feet, and the routing map flickers as she snatches the glowing line toward Engineering Relay Three.

The ship lurches again, but she hits the next hatch before it seals. Her shoulder clips the frame hard, leaving a sting that climbs her arm, yet the impact shoves her through into the relay access.

Engineering Relay Three opens around her in banks of dim panels and hot cable scent. A shield control stack hangs in reset mode, half its indicators stuttering amber, half already reading dead.

Naomi drops to the console, fingers flying over the interface. Her laptop catches on the edge as she works, and the screen floods with a diagnostic lattice that starts to untangle the three failing bands.

One warning light turns steady green, then a second follows. The vibration in the deck eases by a fraction, but a fresh cascade of thermal alarms blooms on the side panel, demanding a choice in the next cycle.

Naomi commits the last line of code, and the relay answers with a clean, resonant tone. The amber warnings collapse one by one as the shield stack snaps into a synchronized green. Across the deck, the thermal alarms choke off mid-flash.

The ship’s shudder softens into a long, exhausted tremor. Cold air still breathes through the bay, but the pressure in the walls eases, and the red strobe loses some of its bite.

A final diagnostic ribbon scrolls clean across Naomi’s laptop, then locks steady. Somewhere deeper in the ship, heavy systems begin to re-balance, one after another.
