Adventure of Ash 2

Ash follows the giant boar’s trail through black pine and thorn, reading snapped stems, churned earth, and the heavy musk pressed into the damp air.

The forest narrows around a ravine crowded with roots. A beetle crawls over one of the newest hoofprints, and somewhere ahead, brush cracks with deliberate weight.

A giant boar bursts from the bracken, a mountainous black shape beneath a ridge of bristles. Its small eyes fix on Ash as it lowers its tusks.

It charges without warning. Mud sprays beneath its hooves, and the ground seems to thud in time with its approach as it drives straight toward her.

Ash has only a heartbeat before the beast reaches her. The ravine wall crowds her left side, while a fallen cedar blocks the easiest path behind.

Ash throws herself toward the ravine wall as Giant Boar reaches her, its tusks slicing through the space where her ribs had been.

She hits the mud hard and rolls beneath the lowest roots. A stone tears her left forearm, leaving a hot, shallow cut, but the charge misses.

The giant boar slams into the fallen cedar with a cracking report. Branches whip through the air, and its bulk shudders against the trunk.

Mud fills Ash’s palms as she comes up on one knee beyond the beast’s direct path. Giant Boar wheels, snorting clouds into the cold air.

Its charge has carried it past her, leaving the ravine choked with churned earth, splintered wood, and the sharp stink of frightened animal.

For one breath, Ash has open ground between herself and the monster. Giant Boar lowers its head again, searching for her through the broken brush.
