Ash charges between the sheds, bruised and bleeding, while the headwoman and two spear-bearing warriors rush after her. Behind them, another warrior bars the village gate.

The nearest storage shed hangs open. Confiscated hunting straps and weapons lie among the supplies, beside a blood-marked tally cord that sways from a roof peg.

the headwoman

the headwoman

Stop her! She will not escape carrying the tribe’s shame with her.

Ash reaches the palisade’s cramped service passage and smashes through a crossbar with her shoulder. Old timber bursts apart, scattering splinters across the mud.

She tears down a second barrier between two leaning sheds, opening a ragged breach toward the dark tree line. The pursuing warriors slow where the passage narrows.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You think broken wood makes you free? Turn back before the forest takes what the tribe spared.

Ash stands at the edge of the trees, empty-handed and breathing hard. Behind her, the broken village groans, while the blood-marked cord remains visible in the open shed.

Ash wheels back from the tree line and charges into the open shed. The headwoman’s warning follows her through the splintered passage.

She reaches beneath the roof peg and tears free the blood-marked tally cord. The jerk snaps the peg loose, and a falling beam clips her shoulder.

Pain flashes through Ash’s bruised side, but the cord is secured in her fist, its dark stains and knotted marks stark against the rough fiber.

the headwoman

the headwoman

She went back for it. Do not let that cord leave the yard!

The shout brings the nearest warriors around the shed corner. Their spearheads glint between the leaning walls as boots hammer through mud.

Ash stands inside the ruined shed with the tally cord in hand. The forest breach remains behind her, but the pursuit has tightened around the stolen evidence.

the headwoman

Bring her down before she reaches the trees. The cord belongs to the council.

Ash

The cord for a hearing. Let the council see what its knots record.

Ash extends the blood-marked tally cord toward the spearheads. Her bruised shoulder trembles, and fresh blood slips from the cut along her forearm into the mud.

the headwoman

the headwoman

Hold your spears. She offers evidence, not surrender. Take the cord, and bring her before the council.

The warriors halt within the cramped shed. One takes the cord from Ash’s fist, while another binds a rough strip around her bleeding forearm.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You will have your hearing, slave. But every eye will watch you, and every knot will be examined.

The headwoman steps beneath the broken roof and claims the tally cord. The forest breach remains open behind Ash, but the spears now escort rather than strike.

the headwoman

the headwoman

Walk to the council fire. If this cord condemns the tribe, its truth will not be buried.

“I walk to the council fire and testify”

FAILURE (Mediocre Reasoning, rolled -2)

The Breach to Freedom

the eldest

Ash walks beneath the longhouse beams toward the council fire, escorted by spear-bearing warriors. The bound strip tightens around her forearm as blood spots the dust.

The council fire burns in a stone ring before the longhouse. Elderly men and women, weathered human elders in layered brown and gray wool, their stooped silhouettes and lined faces lit by the fire sit beyond it, their faces turned toward the blood-marked cord in the headwoman’s grasp.

Ash

Ash

The cord records what the tribe took, and what was counted against me. I testify that I was sent after the boar, then punished for returning with it.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You testify before the cord is read. Its knots may record stores, debts, or hunting shares, but they do not speak for themselves.

The headwoman lays the cord across a flat stone and begins separating its knots. Dark stains cross several sections, but the firelight reveals no clear markings beneath the grime.

the headwoman

the headwoman

This hearing cannot judge what none can read. The cord stays with the council, and you will remain under guard until dawn.

Her testimony reaches the fire, but not a verdict. The warriors close around Ash again, turning the council circle into a guarded enclosure while the cord remains beyond her reach.

Ash

Ash demands that the elders examine the cord tonight, before dawn can bury its knots beneath another day of silence.

Her demand cuts across the council fire. The warriors remain tense, but the elders turn from the headwoman toward the stained cord and the knots beneath her fingers.

the eldest

the eldest

Examine it now. If the cord bears witness, the council will hear it while the accused stands before us.

The headwoman’s jaw tightens, yet she places the cord in the eldest, an elderly man with a wiry build, weathered brown skin, close-cropped gray hair, and a red wool mantle’s hands. An old bone needle and a bowl of warmed water are brought from the longhouse.

the eldest

the eldest

These dark marks are not hunting grease. They are blood, rubbed into the fiber at separate reckonings. Count the knots aloud.

The eldest cleans each section beside the fire. Beneath the grime, smaller knots emerge, grouped around missing portions where cord has been cut and retied.

This records hides and meat removed from the common stores, then charged against Ash’s labor. The account was altered before she ever entered the forest.

Ash

Ash

Warriors, witness the elders’ ruling. Let every spear here remember what this cord records.

The warriors glance toward the headwoman, then face the council fire. Ash’s bound forearm shifts, and the rough strip darkens as her wound opens again.

the eldest

the eldest

You have heard the cord’s account. Ash was sent to hunt, then charged for stores already removed and counted against her labor.

The eldest lifts the stained cord so its cut and retied sections show in the firelight. The warriors stand close enough to see every knot.

the headwoman

the headwoman

The cord proves an altered tally, not who altered it. Do not mistake an accusation for a verdict.

the eldest

the eldest

Then let this be witnessed: Ash is cleared of stealing the hunting gear and of falsifying this account. The cord remains evidence against its keeper.

The warriors hear the ruling without lowering their spears. Suspicion settles over the headwoman, while blood slips from Ash’s bandage and marks the council dust.

“I demand the warriors let me leave”

FAILURE (Good Intimidation, rolled -2)

Ash

Ash

Warriors, let me leave. The elders have cleared me, and you have no lawful cause to keep me here.

Ash steps away from the council fire toward the open path, her bound forearm held close. The nearest spears cross before her chest, stopping her without striking.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You are cleared of theft, not released from custody. Until the cord’s keeper is named, you remain within the stronghold.

the eldest

the eldest

The ruling forbids punishment for this account. It does not grant the headwoman leave to imprison her without cause.

The warriors hesitate. Their formation breaks its certainty, but two spears remain leveled while the headwoman keeps the stained cord against her mantle.

the headwoman

the headwoman

Take her to the guest hut, under watch. No chains, no clubs. The council will decide custody before the next fire.

The warriors turn Ash away from the gate and toward a small timber hut beside the council yard. Her demand wins restraint, but the open road closes behind spearpoints.

“I ask the warriors to enforce the ruling”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Ash

Ash

Warriors, enforce the elders’ ruling. I am cleared, and no spear has lawful cause to hold me here.

Ash’s words carry across the council yard. The warriors glance from her bound arm to the eldest, then turn their spearpoints away from her body.

the eldest

the eldest

You heard her. The ruling forbids punishment, and custody without cause would become punishment. Stand aside.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You would let an accused slave walk beyond the gate while the cord’s keeper remains unknown?

The nearest warrior steps between Ash and the headwoman, lowering his spear across the path rather than toward Ash. The others follow, forming a barrier against restraint.

the warriors

the warriors

No chains. No clubs. No guarded hut. The elders have spoken.

The crossed spears turn aside. The path to the stronghold gate opens before Ash, while the headwoman remains behind the warriors with the stained cord pressed to her mantle.

“I walk straight through the opened gate”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Ash walks straight through the opened gate, her bound forearm held close as she passes beyond the palisade and onto the rutted forest road.

The gate stands behind her beneath the gray morning sky. Mud clings to her feet, and the dark pines wait ahead beyond the last watchfires.

the headwoman

the headwoman

You leave under the elders’ ruling, not because I forgive you. The cord’s truth will follow us both.

The headwoman’s voice fades behind the timber gate. No spear crosses the threshold, and no warrior pursues as Ash reaches the open road.

the eldest

the eldest

Let her go. Until the next council, the ruling stands, and no hand may seize her without cause.

Wind moves through the black pines, carrying the scent of wet earth and distant rain. Behind Ash, the stronghold holds its uneasy silence; before her, the forest offers concealment and distance.
