Return to the Willowford Garden

Two weeks have passed since the hearing, and Willowford Chapel sits quiet beneath a pale afternoon sky. Bren comes up the familiar path, the grass worn thin by carts and boots, and finds the Seminary Master in the garden, kneeling among herbs.

The beds are carefully kept, despite the season.

You arrive with the same look you wore when you left, though the weight behind it has changed.

He brushes soil from his hands and rises slowly, his face lined with fatigue, but his eyes stay steady on Bren. A small row of thyme bends in the breeze beside the chapel wall.

I have brought back what I can. The rest still feels larger than me.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Good. If it did not, you would not yet understand it. Come, walk with me before evening prayer.

The master gestures toward the path between the garden and the chapel door, inviting Bren into the shade. The air is warm, the stones are still, and for the first time in many days there is room to speak plainly.

✓ Quest Accepted

Speak plainly with the Seminary Master about what changed

I walk with the Master. "I thought my journey would take me far away, to see strange sights and meet strange people. Instead, I learned much about the secrets of the Temple hiding right under my nose."

Return to the Willowford Garden

Bren falls into step beside the Seminary Master, and the two move along the garden edge in the hush before prayer. The chapel wall keeps the sun warm at their backs, while the herb beds give off a sharp, green smell underfoot.

I thought my journey would carry me far away, to strange sights and strangers. Instead, I learned how much the Temple hides right under my nose.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

That is often how a pilgrimage works. It strips away distance first, then shows you what was always near.

He walks with his hands folded behind him, glancing once toward the chapel door before looking back to Bren. A smear of soil darkens one sleeve where he had been kneeling.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

You found ledger work, fear, and men eager to bury the truth. Those are not strange people, Bren. They are ordinary ones, which is why they matter so much.

Bren Riverglade

The second bundle in oiled cloth still weighs in his memory, as if the papers themselves remember the room.

The Seminary Master

And now your name sits inside that record with theirs. You can step back from the politics, but you cannot step out of what you have already changed.

The master slows, letting the words settle between them. He turns toward Bren at the chapel path, calm but grave, as if waiting to see whether Bren will carry that truth or set it down.

Speak plainly with the Seminary Master about what changed

"I cannot hide from my role in the matter. I wanted to heal the sick, to serve Omera. I had no interest in ledgers and secret bargains. What becomes of my studies now?"

SUCCESS (Legendary Theology, rolled +0)

The master stops with one boot on the path’s edge, and the quiet between the herb beds feels suddenly formal. He turns fully toward Bren, no longer walking, as if the answer deserves both feet planted.

Bren Riverglade

Bren Riverglade

I came to serve Omera, not to chase ledgers or bargains. What becomes of my studies now?

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

They become honest. You do not leave your calling behind, Bren. You learn that healing is not only salves and prayers, but knowing where the wound spreads.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Your name is in the record because your hand exposed what others buried. That changes your studies, yes, but it does not ruin them.

A breeze stirs the garden leaves. The master’s sleeve still bears the dark stain of soil, a plain mark beside all the grand trouble Bren has carried back from Northmere.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

You wanted distance from the matter. I understand that. Yet the Temple will remember how you stood inside it. So will I.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Take that burden with care, or hand it over to prayer. But do not pretend it was never laid in your arms.

He waits now, grave but patient, letting the truth settle without pushing for more. The chapel door stands quiet behind him, and the path ahead is still open.

"I fear people will treat me differently. Am I the hero who faced up to corruption in the temple, or the man who ruined others by digging into old secrets? I do not know yet how I will be judged."

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Bren Riverglade

Bren Riverglade

I fear they will judge me in two ways, as the one who faced corruption, and as the one who disturbed old secrets. I do not know what name will stay with me.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Both names may follow you for a time. Only one is true enough to endure, the one shaped by what you actually did.

The Seminary Master

A record is not a praise hymn. It holds the wound, the hand that found it, and the choice to name it aloud.

The master lowers his gaze to the garden beds, then back to Bren, as if weighing the matter against the earth itself. The warm light lays clean lines across the path.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

If your peace depends on being thought innocent, you have asked too much of the world. If it depends on honesty, then you have already begun to keep it.

Bren Riverglade

The record is heavier than the verdict.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

You need not carry every mouth that speaks your name. Let the Temple keep its account, and let prayer keep the rest.

"I do not regret seeking the truth first. I give the rest to Omera."

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Bren Riverglade

Bren Riverglade

I do not regret seeking the truth first. The rest I leave to Omera.

The words leave Bren plain and unadorned, and the path seems to settle around them. The garden keeps its stillness, as if it has heard no oath at all.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Good. Then you are not trying to be spotless, only faithful.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

Faithful men leave marks. Some are seen in ink, some in memory. The Temple will keep the ink.

He straightens from the herb bed and brushes loose soil from his sleeve, then looks past Bren toward the chapel stones, thoughtful and unhurried.

The Seminary Master

The Seminary Master

What follows may still trouble you, but it need not belong to you alone. That is the mercy of a record.

For a moment, the only motion is the warm light shifting over the path and the master waiting, no longer pressing, only watching Bren with calm expectation.
