Bren steps onto the road beyond Northmere Chapel, the twilight soft on the ruts ahead. From the treeline, an elderly knight comes into view, scarred and steady, one hand resting on his sword.

Alexandre Reaper
You walk like a man sent on holy business. Are you the seminarian they have been talking about?

Bren Riverglade
I am Bren Riverglade. I am bound for the Temple to give my account.

Alexandre Reaper
Good. Then hear a warning from an old road-worn fool. The south lane is being watched by men who ask questions first and think later.
He lowers his hand from the pommel, slow and deliberate, and glances toward the chapel behind Bren as if measuring the distance between safety and trouble.

Alexandre Reaper
I can guide you by the ditch path to the old ford. It is longer, but quieter. If you keep your pace, you reach the main road again before dawn.
The knight waits without pressing, a hard face softened by patient concern, offering his help as plainly as a man offers water.
“"I should appreciate the help, Sir Knight. What is your name?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Bren lowers his head in thanks and keeps the road between them easy and open. The knight’s warning sits in the dusk like a lantern held low.

Bren Riverglade
I should appreciate the help, sir knight. What is your name?

Alexandre Reaper
Alexandre Reaper. A tired sword arm, once, and now only a road watcher when the roads grow ugly.
He gives a small nod, more formal than proud, and the lines in his face ease as if the question itself has lightened him.

Alexandre Reaper
I have heard of the chapel trouble, and of a clerk who writes cleanly when others do not. If you are truly carrying an account to the Temple, then I would rather see you arrive than be left to the mercy of the south lane.
The knight shifts his weight, showing the ditch path with the tip of his chin. His hand stays away from his sword, open instead in plain invitation.

Alexandre Reaper
Walk with me, Bren Riverglade. Tell me what you have carried from Northmere, and I will tell you what I have seen on the road.
Bren Riverglade leaves Northmere Chapel behind and arrives at Temple of Omera.
“I take to the road with Reaper. "I thought Northmere would simply be a short stop on my journey, but I might have stepped on a hornet's nest."”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

The Temple of Omera rises from the evening mist, quiet stone and warm lamplight after the road’s roughness. Bren and Alexandre reach the yard together, and the sound of their boots fades under the eaves.

Bren Riverglade
I thought Northmere would be a short stop on my journey, but I may have stepped on a hornet’s nest.

Alexandre Reaper
A hornet’s nest, yes. But not every sting comes from the same hand. Northmere has rot in it, and rot draws those who profit from keeping it buried.
He slows at the gate, studying Bren with tired care rather than suspicion. The old knight keeps his sword sheathed, and his free hand settles on the stone as if he means to rest there a moment.

Alexandre Reaper
I have seen this sort of fear before. Men call it order when they are protecting their own accounts. If your papers speak cleanly, the Temple must hear you out.

Bren Riverglade
Then I should give the full account at once.

Alexandre Reaper
You should, and I will walk beside you while you do. A weary road watcher is still better company than a coward with a seal.
Bren steps under the temple arch with Alexandre at his side, the road behind them now only a dim strip beyond the yard. For the first time since Northmere, the knight looks less like a warning and more like a witness.
“I enter the Temple and go to give my account.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Bren crosses the threshold and the temple hush receives him at once. The yard light falls behind his shoulders, and the first stone room opens before him, plain and waiting.
He brings out the papers and sets his grip, square and careful, as if arranging an offering. The vellum and prayer strip lie among the other records, their edges catching the lamplight.

Alexandre Reaper
I will stand here while you speak. Say it cleanly, and leave no loose thread for them to pull.

Bren Riverglade
I am here to give the full account of Northmere.
At that, the waiting cleric at the inner door lifts his head and beckons Bren forward, not with suspicion, but with the tired efficiency of a man expecting difficult truth.

Alexandre Reaper
Good. Let the Temple hear it from the source, not through rumor.
Bren steps deeper inside, and the room turns toward him. The road is gone from sight, and the account is now in the Temple's hands.
“I ask the cleric who will receive the testimony.”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Bren Riverglade
Who receives the testimony here?

The Cleric
I do. I keep the Temple’s records for received accounts, then I carry them onward to the proper brother for judgment.
He taps the edge of Bren’s packet with two fingers, careful as a scribe. The motion costs him a glance at the vellum and prayer strip, then at the folded notes beneath them.

The Cleric
Give me the Northmere papers first. The rest can wait until I know what is sealed, what is witness, and what is merely baggage.
Bren parts the stack and offers it over. A little wax flakes from the binding and drops to the stone between them, a small, plain cost for speaking plainly.

The Cleric
You have brought it to the right door, seminarian. I am Brother Osric, and I will set the hearing in order myself.

Brother Osric
Northmere again. If this is clean, it will be work. If it is not, it will be worse.
“I wait for Brother Osric to convene the hearing.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Bren waits where Osric left him standing, the packet still in hand. Inside the archway, the temple settles into a brief hush, then the cleric turns with the papers gathered close to his chest.

Brother Osric
You have done the hard part. Now I tell you what comes next. The hearing is not yours alone anymore.
Osric gestures once toward a side door where another desk waits under lamp light. His tone stays measured, but the words carry weight, as if a sealed book has just been opened.

Brother Osric
The Northmere account touches a chapel, a mayor, and a priest. That means witnesses, copies, and a brother who can answer before the higher seat.
At the threshold, Alexandre Reaper shifts from guard to listener, his hand resting on the sword hilt without drawing it. The old knight's calm now reads less like escort and more like witness to a trial already begun.

Brother Osric
If the record is clean, your passage is protected. If it is rotten, then this temple must cut deep enough to spare the road from worse.
Osric sets the bundle down, and the folded papers, the prayer strip, and the wax-flaked seal sit between them like evidence and burden alike. He looks to Bren, waiting for the final confirmation before the hearing is called.
“"I am ready for the hearing." I say to Brother Osric.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Bren Riverglade
I am ready for the hearing.

Brother Osric
Then stand before it clearly. I will call your name, and the record will follow.
Osric gathers the papers into a neat stack and shifts aside from the desk, making room for Bren to step nearer.

Alexandre Reaper
I will remain. If they ask who saw you enter, I answer.
The knight straightens at the arch, one hand still on the hilt, but his stance is settled now, not wary.

Brother Osric
Good. Witnesses make a clean hearing cleaner. Bren Riverglade, come forward.
The lamplight catches the wax flakes near Bren's feet as he is admitted to the inner desk, the hearing about to begin.
