Sunset leaks through narrow chapel windows, laying red bars across the stone floor. Bren Riverglade steps into the scriptorium, boots quiet on rush-strewn flagstones.

At the far desk, the seminary master sits rigid beneath a hanging lamp. Before him lies a stack of brittle pages, their edges curled like dry leaves.

He taps the top page with two sharp fingers, then pushes the whole ruin of parchment toward the light.

A draft shivers along the shelves. Somewhere beyond the door, the evening bell begins to gather its first dull note, and the master waits without blinking.

Bren Riverglade takes the chair, draws the manuscript close, and bends over the first paragraph. The red sunset strip catches on the page as he reads, careful and steady.

The old script yields under his gaze. Letter by letter, the cramped hand opens its meaning, and the master’s stern line loosens by a fraction.

A grain of dust slips from the page onto Bren’s sleeve, and the brittle corner leaves a pale scratch across his fingertip. The text holds, but it demands patience.

Across the desk, the Seminary Master watches the reading instead of the reader, his fingers drumming once, then stilling.

He reaches for the top sheet, then pauses with it half lifted, as if weighing Bren’s work against the morning bells.

Bren dips the quill, sets its point to the fresh page, and the first line takes shape in a steady black thread. The copied letters sit clean against the old parchment, matching the hand before him.

As he works, the scratch on his fingertip beads once, then dries. The room stays hushed except for the soft drag of quill over page and the master’s breathing across the desk.

Bren carries on through the first paragraph, and the cramped script yields line by line without a hitch. The master leans in, reading over the page instead of testing it.

He sets the lifted sheet down at last, the decision plain in the movement of his hand. The lamp light catches the copied folio, now neat and legible beneath Bren’s pen.

Bren lifts the finished folio from the desk, the page held flat and true between careful fingers. He turns it toward the Seminary Master for review.

The master takes it, not with haste but with the grave care due to a sacred text. His eyes move once across the lines, then again, slower.

A faint crease eases from the master’s brow. He draws the page closer to the lamp, and the copied letters hold true in the amber light.

He reaches at once for the small signet ring hanging at his belt, then pauses just long enough to glance to the margin where Bren’s clean hand has left an unexpected note, a neat spacing mark that improves the next scribe’s alignment.
