The Broad Engineer

The storage container is dark, warm, and crowded with the sharp smells of polymer, nutrient gel, and old machine oil. Panthera unfolds from the split shell, tiny limbs testing the slick floor.

Panthera

Panthera

The pale window appears inside attention, listing health, agility, strength, reasoning, willpower, perception, and unfamiliar skills. Survival first. Stealth first.

Beyond the container, vibration travels through the ship's frame. Footsteps approach, heavy and uneven, then stop beside the sealed access panel.

The Broad Engineer

The Broad Engineer

No. No, that cannot be right. The egg was supposed to remain in storage.

The broad engineer opens the panel and stares at the empty shell. His face tightens. He glances toward the corridor, where the ship's cameras and crew routes make secrecy difficult.

If anyone sees you, they will quarantine the whole deck. Stay hidden, little one. I will find you first.

He closes the panel without noticing the narrow maintenance gap behind the container. Air pulls through it toward the ventilation system, carrying the scent of insects and distant food.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the ventilation system

Director's note

I eat bugs as a number on the status window goes up with each consumed corpse, as the number reaches 5/5 it resets into 0/10 as a popup appears between two choices. The options appear to be related to what was consumed: either a resistance to poison or increased resilience

The Engineer Finds Panthera

Panthera slips through the maintenance gap as the engineer's footsteps recede. The vent narrows around their small body, carrying heat, dust, and the chemical scent of living insects.

A cluster of pale vent mites gathers around a bead of condensation. Panthera strikes quickly, crushing the first and swallowing it before the others scatter into the grille.

Panthera

Panthera

The status window counts each body.

The chase carries Panthera past warm conduits and vibrating fan housings. One mite vanishes beneath a seam; another is caught against the metal and consumed.

By the fifth corpse, the counter reaches 5/5. It resets to 0/10, and a translucent popup opens in the dark: RESISTANCE TO POISON or INCREASED RESILIENCE.

The remaining mites flee deeper into the ventilation system. Their tiny movements pulse through Panthera's attention while the two choices hover, waiting for conscious selection.

Far behind, a hatch clangs shut. The broad engineer is gone for now, leaving only the ship's steady vibration and the unresolved biological prompt.

That killing grants the killer no automatic status-window improvement or reward.

“Although killing doesn't give an automatic improvement or reward for normal animals and humans, it gives a reward to Panthera because of his DNA Reflux skill does it not?”

NO, AND WORSE (VeryUnlikely, rolled 83)

The Engineer Finds Panthera

The two choices remain suspended in Panthera's attention: RESISTANCE TO POISON and INCREASED RESILIENCE. Neither becomes an improvement. The status window refuses to grant a reward for the consumed mites.

Instead, the DNA Reflux pathway opens without a usable template. The Genetic Modification gift catches the mites' chemical pattern and begins forcing it through Panthera's unfinished tissues.

Panthera

Panthera

The body is changing, but the status window gives me no control over it.

The popup fractures into red diagnostic text. Panthera's coordination stutters as unfamiliar proteins spread through muscle and nerve, while the counter stays at 0/10.

A bitter fluid rises from the swallowed bodies and coats the vent floor. The mites' poison is not resisted; it is being processed unevenly, leaving Panthera briefly impaired.

Then a maintenance sensor clicks awake behind the grille. It detects the sudden biochemical heat and transmits a contamination alert through the ventilation network.

The choice pane disappears. A warning replaces it: METABOLIC INSTABILITY. Somewhere ahead, a service hatch unlocks as the ship begins isolating this section of ductwork.

✓ Quest Accepted

Escape the isolating ductwork

“I race to an empty storage room as the ventilation closes behind me and begin to rest as the mutation occurs”

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +2)

The Engineer Finds Panthera

Panthera races through the unlocked service hatch, tiny limbs driving over vibrating metal. Behind them, segmented shutters close through the vent, sealing the contaminated ductwork.

The passage opens into an empty storage room lined with sealed crates and dormant racks. Panthera slips inside before the final shutter locks, then finds cover beneath a low pallet.

They curl into the shadowed space and begin to rest. The ship's vibration becomes distant and steady while the unstable mutation continues moving through unfinished muscle and nerve.

Panthera

Panthera

The storage room is empty, and the vent is closed.

Red diagnostic text flickers across Panthera's attention: METABOLIC INSTABILITY. The chemical pattern from the mites is being sorted, broken apart, and recombined without a selectable result.

Time passes in quiet pulses. Coordination gradually steadies as Panthera remains still, conserving energy while the altered proteins settle into their developing body.

The status window keeps the counter at 0/10. No improvement appears, and the mutation offers no promise of what Panthera will become.
