WORLD & RULES

The Cinder Reach is a network of advanced human and alien civilizations scattered across the galaxy, connected by jump ships that travel between fixed transit points, making interstellar journeys possible but expensive. Every sapient being possesses an innate **status window**, a private interface accessible through conscious attention that displays physical condition, attributes, and skills without requiring implants or machinery; its existence predates every known civilization, and nobody has established why life possesses it. The window describes rather than commands: strength increases through bodily development, skills improve through meaningful practice, and killing something grants no automatic reward. It flags injury and exhaustion but cannot identify every disease, predict an unfamiliar threat, or explain how to become a better person. Cybernetics and genetic modifications can alter the capabilities it measures, but neither can purchase experience or erase the consequences of pushing a body too far. Schools teach children to interpret their windows, employers request witnessed demonstrations of relevant skills, and courts distinguish between what a window actually reports and what someone claims it means. Humans share orbital cities and engineered planets with amphibious Vey and other alien peoples, while dangerous native predators, invasive colonial organisms, and escaped engineered creatures make unsettled worlds and abandoned stations costly to reclaim. So-called magic uses trained mental techniques to direct responsive biological materials, consuming energy and nutrients rather than producing effects from nothing; a window can track proficiency, but training and compatible material are still necessary. Governments administer daily life, while shipping combines, utility cooperatives, and repair unions wield influence through control of essential services. Food and ordinary goods are affordable, but private space, advanced modifications, and passage between stars demand substantial savings. Everyone takes status checks, translation systems, quarantine inspections, and pressure drills for granted, and even a highly skilled monster hunter still needs medical care, functioning equipment, and enough money to cover the rent between contracts.
