The rift hushes the shore. Sand hangs still around Thanatos as he steps clear of the veil, and the nearest legionnaires lower their spears without being told twice.

Ares stands near the loose ring of soldiers, the black fissure behind him no longer widening. Zukalina watches the god of death with wary focus, while the farmer peeks past a shield rim, hope flickering across his face.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Ares. The breach is held, for now. Tell me who keeps command here.

Zukalina

Zukalina

I do. My legion is pulling back. If this thing feeds on blood and claim, then we stop feeding it.

Thanatos gives a single, grave nod. His gaze lingers on the sand, measuring the rift as if it were a wound in the world itself.

The Farmer

The Farmer

Then let it stay stopped. I have no love for spears, but I love this coast more.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Wise. Stand fast, both of you. If the dead still stir beneath this place, I will know why.

Help seal the rift under Thanatos' guidance

Can Thanatos sense if the rift is still drawing power from the nearby legion?

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 80)

Thanatos closes his eyes, his hand hovering inches above the shimmering sand as he traces the invisible threads of energy still tethered to the soldiers. He confirms the rift remains anchored to their lingering aggression, though the connection is fraying.

I focus on the fraying tether with Thanatos

Ares reaches for the tether with the same quiet focus Thanatos uses, but the thread skitters in the dark sand and slips his grasp. The shimmer tightens, then thins, as if his attention only warns it.

Thanatos opens his eyes at once, his hand still hovering over the pulse. The rhythm under the sand stutters, no longer steady enough to mirror.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It resists you. Not because it is strong, because it is uncertain.

Ares

Ares

The tether is wavering, but it is not open.

Across the loose defensive ring, Zukalina watches the change and stiffens. Her warriors hold position, but the line feels thinner now, every spear-tip angled toward the hush at their feet.

Zukalina

Zukalina

If your hand slips, god, tell me before the ground decides for us.

The dark shimmer in the sand draws into a narrow seam, then gives a faint, ominous pulse, waiting on the next choice.

I ask Zukalina to hold her line while Thanatos tends to the rift.

Ares cuts his voice across the ring, and the soldiers answer it by settling their feet. Zukalina lifts her hand once, sharp and controlled, and her line holds. Thanatos keeps both palms near the seam as the dark sand hushes around him.

Zukalina

Zukalina

You heard him. Hold here. No spear crosses that mark unless I give it.

A thin tremor runs through the ground anyway. Thanatos’s focus sharpens, and the seam in the sand dims under his touch.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Good. The tether loosens when the pressure drops.

The cost comes clean and immediate, a sharp sting where the rift brushed Ares’s hand, like cold ash under the skin. The seam narrows to a hairline thread, then starts to knit at the edges.

The Farmer

The Farmer

By the gods... it is actually closing.

Thanatos does not look up. His hand stays over the pulse, and the last thread of dark shimmer waits, fragile and trembling, for the next breath of pressure or peace.

I signal Zukalina to withdraw her spears farther back

Ares lifts two fingers and cuts them backward in a low, flat arc. The nearest spearpoints answer at once, easing a full step farther from the seam as Zukalina’s line shifts its weight and opens a wider ring.

Zukalina

Zukalina

Back. Give him room.

The pressure around Thanatos drops with the soldiers’ retreat. The dark shimmer in the sand steadies, and the hairline thread pulls tight beneath his hovering hands.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Better. Keep the circle clear.

The seam answers by knitting inward another fraction, sand drawing over blackness like a wound closing under a calm hand.

The Farmer

The Farmer

It is sealing. By the gods, it is really sealing.

Thanatos stays kneeling in the center of the widened gap, one hand still over the last pulse of shadow. The rift holds to a trembling thread, one breath from either closing or splitting again.

I step back with Zukalina and the others to let Thanatos concentrate. "This is the first time I've met mortals so willing to cooperate with the gods of war and death."

Ares takes the offered space and eases back with the widening ring, boots whispering through the sand. Thanatos keeps his attention fixed on the seam while the mortal line holds itself still around them.

Ares

Ares

This is the first time I have met mortals willing to cooperate with the gods of war and death.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Willingness is easier when the alternative is being swallowed by the dead. Still, they are holding.

Zukalina

Zukalina

My soldiers know a losing fight when they see one. Today, that knowledge is useful.

The farmer lets out a shaky breath, eyes on the faint black thread that remains. The dark shimmer in the sand draws inward under Thanatos’s hands, thinner now, quieter.

The Farmer

The Farmer

I would rather have your kind at my side than against it, any day.

Thanatos lowers one hand slightly, as if listening to the seam itself. The last visible tremor smooths out, and the thread begins to knit closed in silence.
