The cafe swallows the harbor noise into clinks, steam, and low Italian conversation. Francesco settles in with the inspector’s stamped papers safe again, the first breath of America finally reaching him.

At the corner table, The Whisperer watches the room with careful stillness, but his shoulders ease now that the inspection is over. His fingers rest near his cup, not reaching for anything.

The stamp is fresh. The path is open.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

You did well. Better than most boys twice your age would have done.

He turns his cup once, studying Francesco over the rim, then glances toward the street where the city waits beyond the window glass.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

Here, nobody cares where you came from, only what you notice, what you remember, and who you know.

The cafe hum continues around them, a small island of warmth in a larger, stranger country. The Whisperer leaves the next pause open, as if inviting Francesco to answer or simply take in the room.

Learn what the café regulars are saying about Little Italy

"Thank you for the compliment. I am a little perplexed that someone of your standing in the society would be assigned to a fledgling like me." I glance around trying to take notice of anything out of place.

Thank you. I am a little puzzled that someone of your standing would be assigned to a fledgling like me.

The Whisperer lets the compliment settle, then gives a small shrug that means the answer matters less than the work. His gaze drifts across the room with Francesco's, reading the cafe like a ledger.

Near the counter, two dock men stop talking when Francesco looks up, then return to their cups too quickly.

A folded paper on the back table catches the light, half-hidden under an ashtray, and a waiter keeps one eye on it as he wipes the marble.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

This place tells on people. If you know where to look, you learn who owes, who fears, and who is trying too hard to seem harmless.

Francesco's scan lands on a man by the window with fresh mud on his cuffs, listening instead of speaking. The Whisperer notices the same detail and goes still, waiting to see what Francesco makes of it.

I get up and pass by the mud cuffed man. Pausing to gain any information.

"my first day in America and I already have a vice." "Scusi but do you have a light please."

Francesco rises with the cigarette already between his fingers, and the chair legs scrape softly on the marble. He crosses toward the window table, casual as smoke, while the room keeps pretending not to watch.

My first day in America, and I already have a vice. Scusi, do you have a light?

The mud-cuffed man looks up, then reaches into his coat and holds out a matchbook without a word. The Whisperer studies the exchange from the side, his cup paused halfway to his mouth.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

He does not waste time. Good. Men who ask plainly learn faster than men who perform.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

You ask like you belong here already. That can save you time, or make enemies. Depends who hears it.

As Francesco takes the offered light, the mud on the man's cuffs stands out close enough to see, dark and still damp. The waiter at the back table shifts the ashtray aside for a moment, and the folded paper under it peeks free.

Lorenzo

If you want neighborhood intelligence, start with the people who arrive dirty and leave quiet. That one by the window notices more than he says.

I lit a cigarette to also go by the back table making it look like I am after the ashtray and palming the note at the same time.

The Whisperer sees Francesco drift past the mud-cuffed man toward the back table, cigarette lit and shoulders loose, as if the ashtray matters more than the room. The folded paper disappears from sight a heartbeat later, and the man by the window only follows with his eyes.

I discretely glance at the note and listen to the regulars at the back.

Francesco slows beside the back table and lets his cigarette glow while his other hand opens the folded paper just enough to catch the light. Around him, the regulars keep talking low, but one line about a shipment at the docks lands hard before the room swallows it.

The words come clean through the café murmur, enough to sort from the clink of cups: a shipment is due at the docks tonight, and someone is worried about the count.

Francesco Fontaine

Francesco Fontaine

Docks. Tonight.

Francesco keeps the cigarette near his mouth and lets his attention drift past the paper, as if the ash matters more than the ink. The room stays low, but the back table has gone a shade tighter.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

You heard that one too, didn't you?

The Whisperer leans in just enough to keep his voice under the café noise, eyes still on the regulars instead of on Francesco. Near the window, the mud-cuffed man stiffens and looks toward the back before pretending not to.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo

When men start counting boxes twice, somebody expects trouble or already made it.

At the back table, the partially open paper sits in Francesco's reach, while the dock talk lingers in the air like cigarette smoke. Nobody calls attention to him, yet the room has clearly marked that he is listening.

I glance at the the note reading it but not picking it up before I return to the whisperers table.

Francesco rises with his cigarette and drifts past the mud-cuffed man, close enough to catch a breath of stale wool and dock brine. He pauses by the back table, eyes dropping to the partially open note as if the ashtray still interests him more than the words. Behind him, the regulars keep talking, but one nearby voice goes careful and thin.

He reads fast. Good.

If I ask about the docks directly I only draw attention to my destination instead I tell the mud cuffed man I only arrived on the Isabella Fiadora today and seeing his outfit. He might know where an immigrant can find work

Francesco flicks his cigarette alive and angles past the window man again, the note still half hidden under his glance. At the back table, he catches a fresh scrap of talk about labor on the docks, enough to name a likely hiring corner without saying a word aloud. The mud-cuffed man stiffens, then starts watching Francesco like he wants to be useful.

I just got off the Isabella Fiadora today. You look like you know this neighborhood, where can an immigrant find work?

Work? Near the docks, if you can lift and keep your mouth shut. Same corner that takes on day men before sunrise.

The man nods toward a street angle and drops his voice, as if the café itself might be listening. The Whisperer stays still, but his eyes sharpen over the rim of his cup.
