Cornered in the Rain

Goblan slips into a dripping side lane beyond the den, and the cellar noise cuts off behind him. Rain beads on rotten brick, and the alley narrows toward a darker archway.

A lantern burns ahead under a sagging awning, throwing gold across a puddled crossing. Beyond it, the street opens toward the city market, where shutters bang in the wind and foot traffic thins.

Heavy boots hit the mouth of the alley. Someone is coming fast, not trying to hide it.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Running already? I thought you wanted freedom, Goblan.

The Bandit Captain steps under the lantern, smiling like this is all still a game. Behind him, a hooded city watchman pauses at the street corner, hand near his baton, eyes narrowing at the scene.

Goblan’s route splits, one way into the market crowd, the other into a narrow stair dropping toward the river dark.

I say "Are you with that bandit dear watchman" then I start to dash into the market crowd

Goblan

Goblan

Are you with that bandit, dear watchman?

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

If I were, you would already be on the cobbles. I am with order, goblin, not his games.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Order? That depends who is paying, doesn’t it?

Goblan darts out from the alley mouth and cuts into the market flow. Cloaks, baskets, and rain-shiny boots swallow his shape in a blink.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Keep moving. If you mean to live, do not look back at me.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Clever little rat. You heard him, watchman. Choose your side.

The watchman’s gloved hand lifts, not to strike, but to cover the badge at his chest. In the lantern glow, a strip of crimson cord peeks from beneath his cloak.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Go on, Goblan. If you want the truth, ask it fast.

I say "I wanna trust you but I need to gain my freedom but this bandit is trying to take away my freedom. If you are telling truth prove it to me. Help me please"

Goblan

Goblan

I want to trust you, but I need my freedom. This bandit is trying to take it. If you speak truth, prove it. Help me.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Then I will earn that trust. I do not serve him. I serve the city, and tonight the city is being bought and sold in the rain.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

A noble speech. Shame it comes with a badge under the cloak.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

The crimson cord is a signal, not his leash. He uses it to mark those he has paid, and those he means to silence.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Goblan, look at me. I am warning you plainly, if you run now, he will steer the market after you. If you stay, I can mislead him.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Mislead? No, watchman. Say it clear, are you protecting the little thief, or are you afraid to name your master?

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

I am naming him now. He is not my master. I can give you a path through the crowd, if you decide fast.

I take the watchman's path through the crowd. While I am running through crowd I am trying to look at the map that I have for find that path I need to take

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Cornered in the Rain

Goblan turns at once, cutting into the market flow as if he belongs to it. Rain-dark cloaks brush his shoulders, but the crowd opens where the watchman’s hidden path will lead.

Goblan

Goblan

The map is damp, but the marks still hold.

He flicks the map open in one hand while moving, eyes skimming the streets between stalls and awnings. The route lines up with the watchman’s angle, a narrow thread between the butcher’s stand and the spice carts.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

There, keep left after the lantern pole. Do not stop for anyone.

Goblan follows the line cleanly, shoulders low, feet quick, the paper tucked and checked in the same breath. A knot of buyers shifts aside just enough for him to slip through.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Fast little rat. Try the far lane, and see who closes it first.

The warning lands late. Goblan is already through the gap, and the watchman’s direction has carried him to the edge of a rain-slick passage beyond the crush.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Choose now, Goblan. The alley or the river steps?

I take the alley beside the lantern pole as I get information from map and watchman and before run away I am looking watchman's face and I will try to remember it later

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

Cornered in the Rain

Goblan angles past the lantern pole and slips into the alley’s shadow, rain ticking off brick and awning. The market noise thins behind him, but the captain’s laughter still carries from the street.

Goblan

Goblan

The watchman’s face is set, thin under the hood, with a scar across the cheek.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Left lane. Keep moving, Goblan. Do not let him read you.

As Goblan moves, the watchman’s hood shifts just enough for him to fix the man’s features in memory, pale eyes and that scar clear as a mark on glass.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Run, little rat. The rain cannot hide you forever.

Ahead, the alley narrows into a dim cut between stone walls, slick with runoff and littered with broken crate slats.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

River steps or the alley, choose with your feet. I can only cover one.

I take the river steps and try to get lost that bandit captain

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +2)

Cornered in the Rain

Goblan cuts down the river steps, small and silent between the wet stone rail and the black water below. Behind him, the market noise blurs into rain and distance.

He slips behind a stack of soaking fish baskets as a pair of late shoppers pass, then is gone when they look again.

The bandit captain’s voice rises from the street above, sharp with annoyance, but it does not find him.

At the river landing, a rope rail shudders in the wind. A ferryman under a slouched cap glances up, then away, pretending not to notice.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Good. Now keep low. If he asks the steps, he gets no answer from here.

Goblan reaches the bottom of the steps unseen, with the market behind him and the waterway ahead, and spots a narrow barge line tucked under the bridge shadow.

I slip onto the barge line and hide

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)

Cornered in the Rain

Goblan drops from the steps to the slick river line, the rope biting wet into his gloves as he slides under the bridge shadow.

He folds into a crouch behind the hanging barges, where tar, canvas, and black water swallow the shape of him.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Stay there. The captain will think you took the far road.

Above, a boot scrape echoes on stone, then passes on toward the steps without spotting him.

Goblan

Goblan

The line is hidden enough. The current masks sound.

A loose barge swings once on its mooring, revealing a dark gap under the bridge large enough for Goblan to vanish into.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

If you mean to breathe unseen, get under there now. Before he turns back.

I crawl under the bridge and hold my breath like I am some ghost then wait for the Captain's passaway then Watchman's signal

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled -2)

Cornered in the Rain

Goblan slides deeper under the bridge, flattening himself against the wet stone as the barges creak above him.

He stills his breathing, letting the rain, rope groan, and river slap cover the tiny sounds of his body.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Keep low. If the captain doubles back, I will mark it.

A dark shape crosses the landing overhead, boots thudding once, then moving on toward the steps.

Goblan remains hidden in the deeper shadow, unseen beneath the swaying line.

The Hooded Watchman

The Hooded Watchman

Now. On my signal, stay under the beam and do not rush the open.

I wait until de signal then I will thank to the wathcman and leave for the location on map that I have
