A Tense Recognition in the Pit

Smoke curls low over the cellar ring as the door groans open again. A man in worn leather steps into the dim light, still as a drawn blade. Several heads turn. Goblan is already in the ring when the newcomer stops short, and the whole room tightens around that single glance of recognition.

Another one with a knife in his eyes. Let’s see which way this goes.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You there. Small one. I know that face.

The stranger’s hand stays near his belt, but he does not reach for steel. He studies Goblan like a scout reading tracks in mud, then flicks a look to the captain as if weighing the room before he commits.

The Stranger

The Stranger

No trouble from me. I’m only passing through, if the den still allows that.

The Bandit Captain spreads his hands, half amused, half wary, enjoying the sudden tension as much as any wager. The crowd hushes harder, waiting for Goblan to answer with a word, a threat, or a blade.

Handle the stranger’s challenge

I step forward and demand the stranger state their terms. And looking my daggers and my leather armor at the same time

SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled -3)

A Tense Recognition in the Pit

Goblan steps into the smoke and lifts both daggers where everyone can see them.

He lets his leather armor catch the torchlight, a small, hard warning in the cellar gloom.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Easy. I did not come for your throat.

The Bandit Captain

Then say it plain, stranger. Terms for the pit, or leave it silent.

The Stranger

The Stranger

I want passage through your den, and I will pay with information. The kind that saves lives.

The Stranger

The Stranger

There is a courier road, three hills east. Your rivals use it tonight, and they do not travel alone.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Interesting. Goblan, you heard him. Do you take the bargain, or make him prove it in the ring?

I take the stranger’s bargain and look for that information after a fight in that ring

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

A Tense Recognition in the Pit

Goblan lowers his blades just enough to show he accepts the terms, not the threat. The ring hushes, waiting for the captain to mark it.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

Good. Fight first, talk after. If you live, the road is yours and my interest too.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then listen carefully. The courier carries a wax seal, black on red. It is not coin that rides tonight, it is names.

A rough laugh passes through the cellar. The captain nods once, pleased by the turn, and the crowd leans in as if the air itself has tightened.

The Bandit Captain

The Bandit Captain

You hear that, Goblan? Not a brawl for pride. A proper wager. Show me you can earn a secret with steel.

The Stranger

The Stranger

And if you take the ring, I will tell you where the courier rides. No tricks, no knives in the dark, just a clean exchange.

Goblan holds his place in the smoke, the stranger's offer now fixed in the captain's grin. The pit is his, and the next choice waits on the edge of the first swing.

I ask the stranger about the courier then fight with the captain's champion not with the stranger

SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +0)

A Tense Recognition in the Pit

Goblan angles his gaze past the stranger and points his chin toward the ring. The captain’s champion steps in from the smoke, rolling a shoulder, while the stranger stays back and watches.

The courier rides the east road by moonfall. Black wax, red seal. Ask for the toll-house name if you need the handoff.

Goblan shifts his footing, letting the question land, then turns squarely toward the champion as blades rise around the pit. The crowd parts its breath with him.

The Bandit Captain

That is the kind of courtesy I like. Goblan, take him clean, and keep the stranger talking if you can.

The champion lunges. Goblan meets the charge with a short sidestep and a flick of steel that forces the taller fighter back on balance, not blood.

In the same breath, Goblan snaps his head toward the stranger, keeping one blade high and one low. The answer is heard, and the duel is joined.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If you survive this, find me before dawn. I will name the toll-house and the man who seals the pouch.

I strike the champion before he resets. Then I say to the stranger "Go ahead I will find you"

SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +2)

A Tense Recognition in the Pit

Goblan darts in before the champion can square his feet, twin blades flashing in a tight cross that snaps the bigger fighter off-line and wins the center of the ring.

The champion grunts and gives ground, his guard broken just enough for the crowd to roar. Smoke curls around his boots as he stumbles into a new stance.

Goblan

Goblan

Go ahead. I will find you.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Good. Then come before dawn, and ask for the toll-house name.

He dips once, sharp and wary, already fading back into the smoke as the promise hangs between them.

The Bandit Captain’s grin widens on the rim of the pit, and a ring of onlookers pounds the tables in sudden approval.

The champion lifts his blade again, but now he is forced to reset under the crowd’s noise, eyes locked on Goblan for the next exchange.
