Captain Harl leads Isenborn, Mara, and the protected bride from the market toward the Baroness’s outer hall. Four Hawkness guards remain behind with the Veyne rider and his companions under watch.

Captain Harl

Captain Harl

Keep close. The Baroness will hear the matter before anyone carries it elsewhere, and no rider leaves the market while my guards watch him.

The outer hall rises beyond a small stone court, its gate open but its windows shuttered. A thin, middle-aged man in a dark blue cote stands beneath the lintel, quill tucked behind one ear and keys at his belt.

Odo Pell

Odo Pell

Captain Harl, stop there. Before this reaches the Baroness, I require the letter’s provenance. Who carried it, who sealed it, and why has a Veyne matter been brought to Hawkness’s door?

Captain Harl

Captain Harl

The letter was carried into Hawkness by the runaway bride and remains sealed with Mara Veyne. The knight brought them through the market under lawful protection.

Odo Pell

Odo Pell

Lawful protection is not a writ of introduction. And you, knight, account for bringing a Veyne dispute before the Baroness. Did you act under her orders, or on your own judgment?

Mara keeps one hand over the sealed letter beneath her cloak. The bride watches Isenborn, while Captain Harl stands aside and leaves the steward’s challenge unanswered for him.

Have the Baroness accept Isenborn's intervention as authorized

“I acted under my own judgement. This lady helped save our grain from goblin raiders and escort it safely here. She has done a service to Hawkness and I was taught that services should be repaid in kind.”

I acted under my own judgment. This lady helped save our grain from goblin raiders and escort it safely here. She served Hawkness, and services should be repaid in kind.

The steward’s mouth tightens at the appeal, but Captain Harl gives a measured nod. The bride lowers her gaze, while Mara keeps her hand over the sealed letter.

Odo Pell

Odo Pell

A service is not a writ, knight. Still, Hawkness cannot accept a harvest saved by her hand and then deny her a hearing without cause.

Captain Harl

Captain Harl

She remains under my protection until the Baroness hears her. I will answer for that protection, and so will the knight who claimed it.

The steward studies Isenborn with fresh suspicion, plainly marking him as responsible for the woman’s presence. Then he turns and unlocks the inner doors.

Odo Pell

Odo Pell

The Baroness will receive her now. Knight, your judgment has purchased this audience, but the obligation is recorded against you if this brings trouble to Hawkness.

The inner hall opens beyond him, warm with lamplight and guarded silence. The bride steps forward beneath Hawkness’s protection, while Mara follows with the sealed letter still hidden beneath her cloak.

“Do I know if the Baroness values honor?”

The steward holds the inner door open, but his guarded expression eases. In Hawkness, the Baroness’s word carries weight because she prizes honor above convenient appearances.

Odo Pell

Odo Pell

Her Grace will hear a petitioner who has served Hawkness faithfully. She may be stern, but she does not cast aside a just claim to protect a comfortable lie.

Captain Harl’s shoulders settle, as though the answer confirms what he already trusted. The bride looks up, and Mara’s guarded fingers loosen slightly over the sealed letter.

Then this audience is not charity. It is the Baroness’s duty, and Hawkness will stand by the protection already given.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

I had feared an oath would matter less than my father’s name. If the Baroness honors her word, I will speak plainly before her.

The steward steps aside. Warm lamplight falls across the threshold, and the protected bride enters first, with Mara and Captain Harl following beneath the steward’s watchful gaze.

“I follow behind Captain Harl and await the Baroness”

Isenborn follows Captain Harl through the warm inner hall, keeping behind the guard as instructed. The steward closes the door against the cold court and leads them onward.

The hall opens into a modest audience chamber. An adult woman sits beneath Hawkness’s carved arms, her dark hair threaded with silver, her sober green gown plain except for a narrow gold chain at her throat.

the Baroness

the Baroness

Come forward. You have protection here, and I will hear the matter before any family claim is accepted.

The runaway bride steps into the lamplight, while Mara remains close beside her with the sealed letter hidden beneath her cloak. Captain Harl stops at the threshold.

Captain Harl

Captain Harl

My lady, the knight brought them safely through Hawkness and claimed your authority to protect them. I witnessed no breach of law.

The Baroness’s gaze settles on Isenborn, weighing him without hostility. She is a middle-aged woman with a sturdy build, a square face, and a small scar beside her left eyebrow. The room falls quiet, and the waiting audience has begun under Hawkness’s own roof.
