The Runaway Bride

Isenborn reaches the village crossroads beneath a sky veiled in smoke. Goblins spill from both hedgerows, lean green figures in mismatched leather, driving villagers from grain carts and burning stores.

The road is choked by an overturned wagon. Beside it crouches a young adult woman in a torn ivory wedding gown, her dark braid streaked with ash, clutching a silver ring.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

Please! Someone stop them! The harvest replacement is in those carts!

A goblin with a smoking brand thrusts it into the hay cart. Flame crawls through the dry straw while another hacks at a grain sack, scattering wheat across the mud.

Run, softskins! Leave the food, or burn with it!

Villagers flee between the cottages, some dragging children, others abandoning handcarts loaded with flour and barley. The burning hay cart blocks the clearest approach to the raiders.

Lady Elin Veyne

Knight, please! If you have a sword, use it now!

Secure the replacement harvest

“I draw my sword and slash at the nearest goblin”

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled +2)

Fire at the Crossroads

Isenborn draws his fine steel longsword and cuts across the burning cart's approach. The nearest goblin turns too late; the blade strikes, and the raider collapses beside the scattered grain.

Lady Elin Veyne

Good! Keep them from the carts!

The knight! Bring him down!

The goblin raider abandons the grain sack and rushes around the wagon, brandishing a crooked blade. Behind him, the remaining raiders scatter through smoke and trampled wheat.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

The fire is spreading to the barley!

Flames snap higher in the hay cart, throwing orange light across Isenborn's mail. The fleeing villagers gain the cottages, while the bride rises behind the overturned wagon, still clutching her ring.

“I strike down the final goblin raider with my sword.”

The charging goblin swings its crooked blade. Isenborn turns the blow aside and cuts through the raider's guard, his fine steel longsword striking deep enough to kill it. The goblin crumples in the mud beside the wagon.

For a breath, only the fire answers. The other goblins vanish between the cottages, leaving scattered wheat, two fallen raiders, and the burning hay cart behind them.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

They are fleeing! The carts, knight, save the carts!

The bride points toward the barley cart, where sparks leap across its canvas cover. Beyond it, the grain remains piled and intact, though smoke rolls low over the road.

Behind the cottages, frightened villagers begin to look back. No goblin returns. The village crossroads lies battered, but the raiders have lost their hold on it.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

My thanks, sir knight. Please, help me pull the burning cart clear before the barley catches.

She gathers her torn gown and steps toward the overturned wagon, silver ring clenched in her fist, while the flames crackle higher in the dry hay.

“Is there a well nearby?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 58)

Fire at the Crossroads

The Runaway Bride

Beyond the cottages, a moss-dark stone well stands beside a leaning shed. Its wooden windlass is intact, but smoke coils thickly around the rim and the bucket rope hangs charred.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

There! The well! We can drown the fire before it takes the barley.

The bride hurries toward it, lifting her torn gown clear of the mud. Behind her, villagers emerge from the cottages with pails and empty barrels.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

The rope is burned through! Someone must hold the bucket while another draws it.

A gust drives sparks beneath the barley cart's canvas. The dry covering catches along one edge, and bright flame begins crawling toward the piled grain.

The Fleeing Villagers

Water! Bring water from the well!

The well offers a chance to save the harvest, but the failed rope leaves the bucket useless until the villagers lower a fresh line. The first pails gather at the smoking cart.

“Can I use the tack from the horse which was pulling the cart to make an improvised rope?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 70)

Fire at the Crossroads

The cart horse stamps beside the shed, its leather harness dark with sweat and soot. The tack is broad and tough, but its shortest straps will not reach the well bucket.

When the harness is drawn tight, a buckle tears free and the leather splits along an old crack. It cannot serve as a rope, but the broken breast strap reveals a coil of spare line tucked beneath the padding.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

The harness will not hold. Cut away that spare line, quickly, before the canvas fire reaches the grain.

The bride snatches up the loose end and pulls it from beneath the saddle padding. The cord is short, yet long enough to lower the bucket if the windlass bears its weight.

The Fleeing Villagers

Make room! We have pails ready!

Smoke thickens over the barley cart as the villagers crowd around the well. The salvaged cord hangs between them, offering one narrow chance to draw water before the flames cross the canvas.

“I help attach the cord to the windlass and use my strength to support the windlass as the pails are lowered to retrieve water from the well.”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +3)

Fire at the Crossroads

The Runaway Bride

Isenborn takes the salvaged cord from the runaway bride, loops it firmly around the windlass, and braces his broad shoulders against the smoking well frame.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

Hold it steady, knight. Lower the bucket slowly, and we will have water on the fire.

The villagers knot their pails to the cord beneath his guidance. Isenborn bears the windlass's pull as the bucket descends into the dark well.

The wooden beam groans in his grip, but his strength keeps it from spinning back. Below, the bucket strikes water with a muffled splash.

The Fleeing Villagers

Draw! Draw! The canvas is burning through!

Isenborn hauls the windlass upward while the villagers seize the cord. A full bucket rises from the well, and they carry the first water toward the blazing barley cart.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

Again! The grain can still be saved.

“I haul up more water for the barley”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +2)

Fire at the Crossroads

The Runaway Bride

Isenborn turns the windlass again, hauling the salvaged cord hand over hand. The beam creaks, but the bucket rises steadily through the well’s cool darkness.

The bucket clears the rim brimming with water. Smoke stings Isenborn’s eyes as he steadies it against the stone and passes the cord to the waiting villagers.

The Fleeing Villagers

Pass it forward! Wet the canvas first, then the grain beneath!

Four villagers carry the full bucket to the barley cart and throw the water across the burning canvas. Steam billows up, and the nearest flames shrink beneath the soaked cloth.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

That is it, knight! Draw another before the fire finds the grain.

Isenborn lowers the empty bucket without wasting a breath, then hauls again. The villagers ready their pails while the barley cart’s remaining sparks fade under the first dousing.

“draw one last bucket to quench the fire”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled -1)

Fire at the Crossroads

The Runaway Bride

Isenborn hauls the salvaged cord hand over hand. The windlass groans under the bucket’s weight, and the stone rim scrapes hard across his vambrace, bruising his forearm beneath the leather.

The bucket breaks the surface full. Isenborn braces it against the well and passes the cord to the waiting villagers, a mixed group of soot-streaked adult men and women in rough earth-toned work clothes,, his arm shaking from the effort.

The Fleeing Villagers

Forward with it! The last flames are along the near side!

They carry the water to the barley cart and pour it over the smoking canvas. Steam rolls across the road as the final tongues of fire collapse.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

The grain is safe! You saved the harvest, knight.

The villagers spread the soaked canvas flat and stamp out the remaining embers. Smoke thins above the crossroads, leaving wet barley, blackened straw, and two dead goblins beside the road.

Isenborn releases the cord and rests his bruised arm against the well stones. The fire is quenched, and the village’s replacement harvest remains piled safely beneath the dripping canvas.

Isenborn

What are you doing here, in the middle of this attack?

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

I am trying to get this harvest to Hawkness. The wedding was meant to secure the grain, not leave it burning in the road.

Her answer comes too quickly, and her grip tightens around the silver ring. She glances toward the cottages instead of meeting Isenborn’s eyes.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

I cannot explain it here. My father’s men may still be searching the road, and the villagers need shelter before dusk.

She moves away from the well toward the nearest cottage, gathering her torn gown in one hand. The rescued cart stands behind her, dripping water onto the mud.

The Fleeing Villagers

Lady, the storehouse is open! We can carry the barley inside before the smoke draws more raiders.

The bride stops at the cottage threshold, torn between the villagers and the road beyond. Her guarded answer leaves the question hanging while the harvest still requires protection.

Bring the runaway bride into shelter

“Is the nearest cottage safe enough to shelter her until dusk?”

NO (Even, rolled 69)

Fire at the Crossroads

The Runaway Bride

The nearest cottage offers little shelter. Its front door hangs crooked on one hinge, and the shuttered windows gape blackly toward the road, the air within strangely still.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

No. Not this house. My father’s men searched it before the attack, and they may return to finish the search.

She stops short of the threshold. Fresh boot marks cross the ash before the door, while a torn strip of blue cloth snags on a splintered shutter.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

They will look here first if they saw me leave the road.

The Fleeing Villagers

Lady, the storehouse is stronger. We can bar its door and keep watch from the loft.

Beyond the cottage, the villagers point toward the low storehouse beside the rescued cart. Its thick timber door remains closed, but the road between it and the crossroads lies exposed.

“I ask the bride to help me carry the grain into the storehouse so it can be kept safe”

Help me carry the grain into the storehouse. It will be safer behind a barred door.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

Yes. You have my word, knight. Take the front handles, and I will lift at the rear.

The runaway bride sets aside her silver ring, gathers her torn gown, and takes the rear handles. Together, they steer the rescued cart toward the storehouse.

The fleeing villagers, a mixed group of adult men and women with weathered faces and varied builds hurry alongside, carrying loose sacks and guiding the wheels over the rutted road. Isenborn’s bruised forearm protests under the weight, but the cart reaches the storehouse intact.

The Fleeing Villagers

Inside! The rear loft has a second shutter. We can watch both approaches from above.

The thick door opens, revealing a dry timber floor and a ladder to the loft. The villagers roll the barley inside, while the bride fastens the bar across the entrance.

Lady Elin Veyne

Lady Elin Veyne

There. The harvest is safe for now. And from that loft, we may see whoever comes searching.
