Sylar eases through the left door, Caelen close behind. They enter a broad chamber lined with cracked imperial reliefs and extinguished braziers, while amber lines glow faintly beneath the dust.

A sealed stone bier rests at the center, encircled by fresh tracks that converge from every archway. The marks are deep, as if something heavy was dragged toward it.

Caelen

Caelen

Those lines are warding channels. The crown’s guardians were not stationed here. They were summoned through the bier.

Caelen crouches beside the nearest amber groove without touching it. His face tightens as the lines pulse, answering some unseen movement below the stone.

Caelen

Caelen

The old inscriptions name them as keepers, but not in any language meant for living mouths. If the seal opens, they will defend the crown from us.

Something heavy shifts once behind the bier. Stone grinds against stone, and a thin veil of dust slides from its lid. Caelen rises, chain clenched silently in one hand.

Caelen

Caelen

Stay near the door, mage. Whatever guards the crown has heard us, and it is deciding whether we are worth opening for.

Sylar

You holding some information out on me, lad?

Sylar keeps his voice low beside the glowing warding channels. Behind the bier, stone settles with a slow grinding sigh, but Caelen does not look away.

Caelen

Caelen

Yes. The guardians are not merely servants of the crown. They are bound to my blood, and they will recognize me before they recognize you.

Caelen loosens his grip on the chain and studies the sealed bier. Amber light climbs his gaunt face, showing the strain he had hidden beneath his dry remarks.

Caelen

Caelen

My ancestor did not bury the crown here. He sealed himself beneath it, alive, so his blood could command the keepers forever.

Caelen

Caelen

The cultists wanted my death to break that command and claim what answered the old emperor. I kept silent because I did not know whether you meant to use me or kill me.

The bier’s lid shifts another fraction, revealing a black seam beneath its edge. Caelen faces Sylar fully now, the withheld truth laid plainly between them.

Determine whether Caelen has concealed a dangerous connection to the crown’s guardians

“We slip past quietly”

SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +3)

Sylar lowers his staff and guides his steps along the chamber’s outer shadow, placing each foot between the amber channels and the fresh tracks.

Caelen follows without a word. The bier’s lid grinds another fraction, but their passage leaves the warding lines undisturbed and the dust unbroken.

Caelen

Caelen

Quietly done. Even blood-bound guardians can be denied a proper introduction.

They slip beyond the bier into a recessed archway where cracked reliefs conceal them from the chamber’s center. A narrow stair descends behind a curtain of hanging roots.

Caelen

Caelen

The keepers have not seen us. If the stair reaches the crown’s vault, we may yet choose the terms of our meeting.

Behind them, the stone lid settles with a muted boom. Amber light floods the chamber, but Sylar and Caelen are already below the threshold, hidden in the root-choked descent.

Sylar

Sylar

Where am I taking you to?

Sylar follows the root-choked stair downward, keeping to the worn center where the stone is least slick. Caelen moves ahead beneath the low arch, one hand shielding his face from the roots.

Caelen

Caelen

You are taking me toward the crown’s vault, unless you have developed a sudden fondness for imperial tombs and dead ends.

The stair spills into a narrow passage beneath the bier. Black masonry presses close on either side, and faded imperial script points toward a bronze door far below.

Caelen

Caelen

Beyond that door lies the command chamber. The crown should be there, guarded by the emperor’s bound keepers and whatever else his sorcery bred.

A root tears across Sylar’s sleeve as he passes, scoring his forearm with a shallow sting. The snag also pulls loose a length of dead vine, which drops loudly down the stair.

Caelen

Caelen

So much for remaining unseen. Still, we have reached the vault approach, and the keepers now know the blood-heir is coming.

“" and what's in this vault" I ask "”

Sylar

And what’s in this vault?

The bronze door waits beneath a lintel carved with a crowned skull. Amber light leaks through its seams, carrying the dry scent of old incense and hot metal.

Caelen

Caelen

The command chamber. At its center rests the imperial crown, sealed inside a black stone basin. Around it stand the bound keepers.

Caelen reaches the door and lays his palm against the tarnished bronze. The metal answers with a deep chime, and engraved lines flare gold beneath his fingers.

Caelen

Caelen

They are armored corpses filled with the emperor’s sorcery. They obey my blood, but only while the crown remains sealed. If it is lifted, their obedience ends.

The door opens inward without resistance, revealing a circular vault crowded with black pillars. In the center, a stone basin cradles a dull gold crown beneath a cage of pale fire.

Caelen

Caelen

There is your answer, mage. The crown, its command basin, and the keepers waiting in silence for their heir to speak.

“" I have an important question lad" I pause. " Why"”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Sylar

Sylar

I have an important question, lad.

Sylar pauses at the threshold, letting the crown’s pale fire paint the black pillars and Caelen’s gaunt features in shifting gold.

Sylar

Sylar

Why?

Caelen keeps his palm against the open door. Inside the vault, the armored corpses remain motionless, their empty helms turned toward the blood-heir.

Caelen

Caelen

Because the emperor discovered the crown could command more than soldiers. It could bind the dead beneath this palace, and something older beneath them.

Caelen

Caelen

He sealed himself alive to keep that power leashed to his blood. The crown is not merely treasure, mage. It is the lock, and I am the key it recognizes.

“" I thought we was leaven lad, " I ask slightly worried " you're wanted to go from one fire to the next?"”

Sylar

I thought we was leaving, lad. You want to go from one fire to the next?

Sylar’s question hangs beneath the pale fire. His voice carries farther than intended, slipping between the black pillars and into the command chamber.

Caelen

Caelen

I wanted to leave. Then I learned the crown is the lock, and my blood is the only key it still obeys.

Caelen

Caelen

If I walk away, the seal remains without a keeper. Whatever lies beneath the dead will eventually find another hand to turn it.

One armored corpse, a genderless adult undead figure with a tall, broad-shouldered silhouette beneath corroded plate armor, shifts its weight with a rasp of ancient metal. Its empty helm turns from Caelen toward Sylar, and dust trickles from its shoulder.

Caelen

Caelen

So yes, mage, I am choosing another fire. This one is mine to contain, unless you prefer the palace above to become its fuel.

“"I would prefer to get paid, and be alive to spend it." I seal my self. Roll my eyes and sigh" Alright what needs to be done" I say plainly”

Sylar steels himself, rolls his eyes, and releases a long sigh beneath the pale fire. The gesture costs him a sharp ache in his bruised heel.

Sylar

Sylar

I would prefer to get paid, and be alive to spend it. All right, what needs to be done?

His plain question carries through the vault. The armored keeper’s helm remains fixed upon him, and the pale fire gutters once inside its cage.

Caelen

Caelen

First, I must stand before the basin and speak the blood-command. You must disrupt the crown’s outer ward when it answers.

Caelen steps into the circular vault, keeping his hands visible. The other armored corpses turn toward him, their corroded plates grinding softly beneath the black pillars.

Caelen

Caelen

Then we learn whether the emperor left me authority, or merely a prettier way to die. If the ward breaks, take the crown only when I tell you.

The crown’s dull gold brightens above the basin. Fine cracks of pale fire spread across the stone floor, marking a ritual circle around Caelen and Sylar.

“"This is either madness... or brilliance." I say exasperated. "It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide." I finish”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Sylar

Sylar

This is either madness... or brilliance.

Sylar

Sylar

It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide.

The remark drifts through the ritual circle. Pale fire crawls over the cracks beneath Sylar’s boots, then gathers around the crown without touching him.

Caelen

Caelen

In my experience, brilliance is simply madness that survives long enough to acquire witnesses.

Caelen steps before the basin and raises both hands. The armored keepers lower their helms in unison as gold light threads through the blood-heir’s fingers.

Caelen

Caelen

Now, Sylar. When the crown answers, break the outer ward. Do not touch the basin until I command it.

Caelen speaks an ancient phrase, and the crown answers with a deep metallic note. The pale cage flares outward, its symbols turning toward Sylar as the ritual begins.
