the priestess

Sylar arrives beneath the crumbling emperor’s palace, where chanting rolls through collapsed galleries. Torchlight trembles across mosaics of crowned kings whose faces have been smashed away.

At the cracked imperial altar, several robed cultists drag a bound stranger, a gaunt adult man in torn gray clothes, his dark hair matted with dust. A bronze collar circles his throat.

The priestess turns toward Sylar. She is an elderly woman in layered black and rust-red vestments, narrow-faced beneath a bone crown, one milky eye gleaming like polished stone.

the priestess

the priestess

Stop. The final sign has entered the palace.

Her raised hand freezes the procession. The cultists halt between obedience and panic, gripping the stranger’s chains while the chant falters into scattered whispers.

Caelen

Caelen

Do not let them place me upon that stone.

the priestess

the priestess

The prophecy demands a living offering, mage. Refuse the goddess, and this dead empire will wake hungry.

✓ Quest Accepted

Pull the captive free of the ritual

“" lady, I saw no sign let alone a final sign. I'm looking for the pisser" I say as I take in my surroundings”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Sylar

Sylar

Lady, I saw no sign, let alone a final sign. I’m looking for the pisser.

Sylar surveys the shattered gallery while speaking. Behind a fallen imperial pillar, he spots a dark alcove with a cracked drainage channel, fit for the purpose and mercifully unoccupied.

the priestess

the priestess

You profane the threshold of awakening with gutter humor?

The priestess lowers her hand, and the cultists, a cluster of adult men and women in soot-dark robes, gaunt-faced with ash-stained hands, exchange uncertain glances. The chanting dies completely, leaving only water ticking somewhere beneath the stones.

Caelen

Caelen

If the mage has found a private corner, perhaps the goddess can wait for his return.

the priestess

the priestess

Go, then. Relieve yourself. But the altar will remember your absence, and the offering will not.

The cultists keep hold of the stranger’s chains as Sylar has clear access to the alcove. No one blocks his passage, though every watching eye follows him.

“Does the drainage have liquid in it”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 68)

The Living Offering

The alcove is dry. Dust lies undisturbed in the cracked drainage channel, and the sour stone offers no relief, only the stale breath of deeper tunnels.

Sylar

Sylar

The channel has been dry for years, but something still uses it.

At its far end, beneath a broken tile, the dust gives way to a thin line of clean black grit. Scrape marks score both sides of the opening.

the priestess

the priestess

You search like a rat, mage. Rats find the old ways beneath the palace, then vanish into them.

The priestess’s warning draws the cultists’ attention toward the altar. For one moment, the channel’s concealed mouth lies unwatched, narrow but large enough for a hand or perhaps a crawling body.

Caelen

Caelen

That passage leads below the cisterns. I heard chains moving there before they brought me up.

No water waits in the drain, yet the hidden opening offers a usable route away from the gallery, toward whatever stirs beneath the palace.

“I cast lightning bolt at the priestess channeling through my spell book and staff”

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

The Living Offering
the priestess
the priestess

Sylar opens his spell book and plants the staff against the cracked stone. Arcane symbols flare across the page, blue-white light crawling over his hands and arms.

The staff cracks like a splitting tree. A lightning bolt tears across the gallery and strikes the priestess squarely, engulfing her bone crown and black vestments in blinding radiance.

the priestess

the priestess

The goddess sees you, mage.

Thunder crushes the chant from the chamber. When the glare fades, the priestess lies motionless beside the altar, smoke lifting from the shattered stones around her.

Caelen

Caelen

You chose a decisive answer.

The cultists recoil in terror. Two drop the stranger’s chains and flee into the ruined galleries, while the others stare between Sylar, the fallen priestess, and the dark drain.

Caelen

Caelen

If you mean to leave, now is the hour. The thing below has heard the thunder.

“"well move your bloody arse" I holler at the stranger " git ya self over here!"”

Sylar

Well, move your bloody arse! Get yourself over here!

The bound stranger flinches at Sylar’s bark, then twists toward the dark alcove. Chains scrape stone as he pulls free of the two stunned cultists still gripping them.

Caelen

Caelen

A gracious invitation, mage.

He hurries across the gallery, gaunt shoulders hunched beneath torn gray cloth. One chain trails from his wrists, clattering loudly through the thunder’s fading echo.

The remaining cultists make no move to seize him. They retreat toward the altar instead, staring at their dead priestess and the smoking staff with hollow faces.

Caelen

Caelen

I am here. If that passage is our road, unlock these restraints before the palace notices us.

He reaches Sylar at the alcove mouth, close enough for dust and sweat to scent the stale air. Beneath their feet, something drags chains far below.

“I telekineticlly open the shackles”

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +2)

Sylar fixes his will upon the iron shackles. Invisible force gathers around the metal, lifting the restraints from the stranger’s wrists without touching his skin.

The shackles twist in midair. Their locks snap open with two sharp clicks, and the loosened iron drops into the dust beside the drainage channel.

Caelen

Caelen

That is considerably more useful than your invitation.

The stranger rubs his raw wrists, then bends to retrieve the fallen chain. His eyes remain fixed on the narrow black opening beneath the broken tile.

Caelen

Caelen

We should descend before the palace gathers its senses. Whatever heard that thunder may already be searching the upper galleries.

Behind them, one surviving cultist, an adult man in a soot-dark robe with a gaunt, ash-streaked face, whispers a prayer beside the altar, while another, an adult woman in a soot-dark robe with a narrow, ash-streaked face, edges toward the gallery exit. Neither approaches the alcove.

Caelen

Caelen

Free hands are a blessing. In this place, blessings seldom remain uncontested.

Sylar

Yeah, that was loud. Down the chute.

Sylar kneels at the broken tile and widens the black opening with his staff. Dust spills inward as he lowers himself into the cramped drainage passage.

Caelen

Caelen

Charming architecture. I assume the palace built this passage for people of unusually narrow ambition.

The bound stranger follows, dragging the recovered chain behind him. It catches on a jagged stone, producing a bright metallic scrape that carries through the dark.

The passage slopes sharply beneath the cisterns. Sylar’s shoulder scrapes rough masonry, tearing his sleeve and leaving a hot line across his skin, but he reaches the lower tunnel.

Caelen

Caelen

There. We are below the palace now. And your thunder has left us a trail to follow.

Behind them, the opening remains hidden in shadow. Ahead, old chains drag once across wet stone, followed by a slow, deliberate breath from the darkness.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get the captive safely past the thing below

“"well lad, that sounds unfortunate." I say as I follow the opposite wall”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

The Living Offering

Sylar

Sylar

Well, lad, that sounds unfortunate.

Sylar follows the opposite wall, keeping his shoulder against the damp masonry as the tunnel bends away from the dragging chains. His staff finds each foothold before he commits his weight.

The maneuver carries him past a curtain of hanging roots to a dry ledge overlooking a lower cistern chamber. The cost is a sharp stone that slices through his boot sole and pricks his foot.

Caelen

Caelen

You have a remarkable talent for making misfortune sound like someone else’s appointment.

The bound stranger reaches the ledge behind him, chain looped around one hand. Below, black water circles a sunken platform where iron manacles hang from a broken arch.

Caelen

Caelen

That is the old cistern. The chains I heard came from there, but nothing living should be able to breathe beneath that water.

A slow breath rises from the chamber below. Ripples spread across the black surface, and something heavy shifts beneath the submerged platform.

“" if you want you can always go back to the cutest lad, remember that's still an option." I say plainly " in the meantime let's not wake what ever that is eh" I say with a hushed whisper”

Sylar

If you want, you can always go back to the cutest lad. Remember, that's still an option.

Sylar

Sylar

In the meantime, let's not wake whatever that is, eh?

Sylar's hushed whisper barely stirs the damp air. The bound stranger's answering breath catches, but he clamps one hand over the loose chain before it can scrape again.

Caelen

Caelen

Your priorities are bewildering, but understood. Quietly, then.

He eases the chain onto the ledge and crouches beside Sylar. Below, the ripples flatten, leaving the submerged platform and its hanging manacles motionless beneath the black water.

The cost arrives in silence: Sylar's wounded boot has taken on cold cistern water through the split sole, numbing his foot as he shifts along the ledge.

Caelen

Caelen

There is a stair behind the broken arch. If we reach it without disturbing the water, it leads beneath the western vaults.

“" shouldn't you've left those behind?" I remark about the chains”

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -3)

Sylar

Sylar

Shouldn't you have left those behind?

The bound stranger glances at the abandoned chain, then exhales through his nose. He sets the recovered length beside the wall and begins inching toward the broken arch.

Caelen

Caelen

Yes. Sentiment is a poor companion, but iron is worse. You are right.

He slips one hand beneath the arch and feels for the hidden stair. The chain catches on a root as he releases it, clattering twice against the ledge before settling.

Caelen

Caelen

There. Now the water knows we are here, if it did not already.

A tremor passes through the cistern. The black surface dimples around the submerged platform, while the abandoned chain begins sliding toward the edge by a finger’s breadth.

Caelen

Caelen

The stair is open. Move softly, mage. I would rather meet whatever waits below than explain why we returned for my restraints.

“I descend the stair with the captive "personally I would like to get out with my neck in tack eh." I say”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Sylar

Sylar

Personally, I would like to get out with my neck intact, eh.

Sylar descends the hidden stair with the bound stranger close behind. The steps are slick with condensation, and his split boot slips hard enough to bruise his heel against the stone.

Caelen

Caelen

An admirable ambition. I have found it improves one’s attention to foot placement.

They reach the bottom beneath the western vaults. The stair opens into a low passage ribbed with ancient masonry, where pale mineral crust glitters around sealed burial niches.

Above them, the abandoned chain gives a final metallic scrape as it slips into the cistern. The sound travels down the stairwell, then vanishes into the deeper dark.

Caelen

Caelen

There is no returning that way quietly. We are beneath the palace now, and something above knows the route.

The bound stranger steadies himself against the wall, breathing through the pain in his wrists. Ahead, a faint blue glow pulses beyond an arched doorway, answering the thunder’s old magic.

The Living Offering

“I lead the captive through the glowing doorway. " So why did they want to sacerfice you, you insult the priestess lad, what's ya name.?"”

Caelen

Sylar guides the captive beneath the blue-lit arch. The glow clings to their shadows, cold as moonlight, and leaves a faint burning mark across Sylar’s bruised heel.

Sylar

Sylar

So why did they want to sacrifice you, you insulting the priestess, lad? What’s your name?

Beyond the doorway, the passage widens into a burial vault. Blue fire gleams in wall sconces, revealing a stone table carved with the same broken imperial sigil.

Caelen

Caelen

Because I am the last blood-heir of the emperor they worship. My death would wake the vault and place the old crown in their hands.

Caelen

Caelen

As for my name, it is Caelen. And your insult reached the priestess more cleanly than any spell.

The blue fire gutters as Caelen crosses the threshold, then steadies. Behind them, the glow fades from the arch, leaving Sylar’s scorched heel and their footprints plainly marked.

Caelen

Caelen

If the vault has accepted us, then it may also know exactly what we are.

“I search the vault for another way out”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -1)

The Living Offering
Caelen
Caelen

Sylar searches the burial vault by blue firelight, tracing the walls, examining the niches, and probing the stone table with his staff. Dust reveals no ordinary doorway.

Sylar

Sylar

The sigil is carved over newer stone.

When Sylar presses the broken imperial mark, the table answers with a deep click. Blue fire gutters, and the floor tilts beneath their feet.

Caelen

Caelen

That was not a door. It was a seal, and you have persuaded it to remember opening.

A section of wall sinks halfway before grinding to a halt. Beyond it lies a narrow shaft descending into darkness, crossed by ancient bronze bars.

Caelen

Caelen

The passage is blocked, but not closed. I can see carved steps below. Give me a moment, and I may find what holds it.

The vault shudders again. Fine dust rains from the ceiling, while the half-open wall slowly rises another finger’s breadth, exposing a cold draft that smells of wet earth.

“I help Caelen force the hidden passage open”

SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled +1)

Sylar plants his staff beneath the half-raised wall while Caelen braces both hands against the ancient stone. Together, they lean into its grinding weight.

Caelen

Caelen

On three. Do not release when it shifts.

The seal resists with the stubbornness of buried centuries. Blue fire gutters around them as Sylar pours his will into the staff and Caelen drives upward.

The wall lurches open. A bronze bar snaps loose overhead and crashes onto the vault floor, the noise booming through the niches. Dust chokes Sylar as stone scrapes his shoulder raw.

Caelen

Caelen

There. The passage is open, and the whole undercroft knows it.

Beyond the raised wall, carved steps descend into a shaft lined with damp roots and old imperial script. Cold air rises carrying the smell of wet earth and extinguished incense.

Caelen

Caelen

If the old crown lies below, it has heard us enter.

“I descend with Caelen through the opened passage”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

The Living Offering
Caelen
Caelen

Sylar descends the carved steps with Caelen close behind, one hand on the damp wall and the other gripping his staff. Roots brush their shoulders in the narrow shaft.

The descent succeeds, but a loose stone rolls beneath Sylar’s wounded boot. He catches himself against the masonry, scraping his palm raw as the stone clatters far below.

Caelen

Caelen

Quietly done. The undercroft has heard enough of us for one night.

They reach the bottom together, emerging into a buried corridor where imperial script coils across the walls. The bronze bars remain above them, and the opened passage stands behind.

Caelen

Caelen

The crown is not merely hidden. It is being guarded.

A dull amber glow pulses beneath the corridor floor, illuminating footprints pressed into the wet earth. They are fresh, numerous, and lead toward a set of black stone doors.

Caelen

Caelen

Those tracks were not here when I was brought below. Whatever serves the old crown has begun moving.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn what guards the old crown

“I move quietly toward the doors, staff ready for whatever guards the crown.”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +4)

Sylar advances along the wet corridor with his staff angled before him. He places each step beside the fresh tracks, leaving no new mark in the earth.

The amber glow strengthens beneath the floor, but the black stone doors remain silent. Their bronze hinges are furred with dust, while the tracks pass directly between them.

Sylar

Sylar

The tracks enter, but none return.

Sylar reaches the doors without disturbing the corridor. His staff tip finds a narrow seam between the slabs, and a breath of warm, resinous air slips through.

Caelen

Caelen

You move more quietly than your reputation suggests. The crown’s servants went inside, and they carried something heavy.

From this side, the doors stand slightly ajar, their inner edges marked by fresh scratches. Beyond lies amber light and the faint tolling of metal.

Caelen

Caelen

The left door has no pressure on it. We can enter without forcing the seal, and without announcing ourselves to whatever waits beyond.
