The patrol prepares in muted motion around the wagons. The captain keeps his riders close to Traver, while Ezuri watches the dark pines and Old Dalv stands beyond the firelight.

Alena draws Belron a short distance beneath the trees. Behind them, Traver lies awake beneath the wagon coverings, listening to harness buckles and guarded footsteps without strength to rise.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

You protect me as though that duty explains everything between us. I am grateful, Belron, but I need to know what you believe we are to each other.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Ezuri teases you because she enjoys watching me react. Perhaps she wants me jealous, perhaps she simply enjoys mischief. Either way, I will not let her define this for us.

Alena folds her hands before her, keeping her voice low enough that the camp cannot claim the conversation. Pine shadows move across her face as the fire pops behind them.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

You have been honest with me, and I care about you. But protection is not possession, and neither of us should let fear decide what we are.

Traver Knight

Traver Knight

Alena sounds close, but I cannot make out Belron's answer.

“"You are right fear should not decide what we are Alena. I believe that you are an amazing woman Alena, and I am not sure how you view us, but I would like to be more than friends."”

Belron Valerion

Belron Valerion

You are right. Fear should not decide what we are. You are an amazing woman, Alena, and I would like us to be more than friends.

The confession reaches her, but not as he hoped. Alena’s hands tighten together, and her almond-colored eyes search his face beneath the shifting pine shadows.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

I believe you mean that, Belron. And I care about you. But I cannot promise I am ready to call us more than friends.

Her answer leaves the question between them rather than closing it. She takes one careful step nearer, offering neither rejection nor the certainty he sought.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

What I can offer is honesty. Let us spend time together because we choose to, not because either of us fears losing the other.

Traver Knight

Traver Knight

Her voice sounds gentler than before. Whatever Belron said, it mattered to her.

Alena holds Belron’s gaze, inviting him toward a slower path: trust built openly, with room for affection to become something more if they both discover they want it.

“"I will gladly spend all the time in the world with you Alena." Belron returns her gaze with a smile before the two return to the others.”

I will gladly spend all the time in the world with you, Alena.

Belron returns her gaze with a smile. His words are sincere, but their vast promise makes Alena’s expression turn thoughtful rather than openly relieved.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

That is a beautiful thing to say, Belron. But all the time in the world is more than either of us can promise tonight.

She touches his arm, gentle but deliberate, keeping affection from becoming an agreement neither has chosen. The moment settles into honesty instead of certainty.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Let us take the time we are given and be truthful with each other. That is enough for me right now.

Alena offers him a small, caring smile, then turns back toward the others. Belron walks beside her beneath the trees, their hands apart but their pace shared.

The patrol waits beyond the shadows, with Ezuri near the wagons and Old Dalv watching from beyond the gathered light. Alena returns to them at Belron’s side.

Determine what is moving beneath the trees

“Ezuri teases them the moment they return while Belron goes to stand beside Old Dalv”

Belron returns with Alena beneath the pines, then crosses the camp to stand beside Old Dalv. Ezuri notices at once and turns her bright smile toward Alena.

Ezuri

Ezuri

There you are, handsome. I was beginning to think the ancient vampire had stolen you away for a private lesson in mystery.

Alena’s gaze flicks from Ezuri to Belron, her expression composed but newly attentive. Ezuri catches the change and leans lightly against her bow.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Though perhaps you prefer his company now. He has the advantage of knowing exactly how to keep a girl curious.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Ezuri, must every quiet moment become an experiment? Belron is allowed to choose where he stands.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

The young ranger enjoys stirring calm waters. Let her tease, Alena. The truth usually remains visible beneath the ripples.

Ezuri laughs softly, pleased rather than chastened. Alena settles near the wagons, while Belron remains beside Old Dalv and the camp’s wary attention gradually eases.

“"Lead the way Old Dalv. May I ask you a question?" The wagons and party begin to follow Dalv's guidance.”

Lead the way, Old Dalv. May I ask you a question?

Old Dalv turns from the dark pines and begins along a narrow southern trail. The wagons follow, wheels pressing softly through frost while riders keep close around Traver.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

You may ask. Whether I answer fully will depend on the question, but I will not punish honest curiosity.

The path descends between ancient trees, where pale stones mark an abandoned forester’s road. Old Dalv walks without hesitation, guiding the party away from the watched route.

Ezuri

Ezuri

How generous of him. Ask carefully, handsome. Ancient answers often come wrapped in more mystery than anyone requested.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Let him ask, Ezuri. Old Dalv offered us a safer road, and Belron deserves the chance to understand who guides us.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

Speak, Belron. The road is long enough for an answer, and the others may benefit from hearing it as well.

“"Have you ever met a witch or perhaps even Valerion? If you were alive back in those days."”

Belron Valerion

Have you ever met a witch, or perhaps even Valerion, if you were alive back in those days?

Old Dalv slows beside a pale milestone. Behind him, the wagons creak to a halt, and the patrol’s delay draws uneasy glances from the riders guarding Traver.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

I have met witches. Verana was already ancient when I first encountered her, and I knew Yela only by reputation. Witches remember more than they reveal.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

As for Valerion, yes. I met Bartholomew, your ancestor, before the werewolf clans scattered. He was tall, fierce, and burdened by the responsibility of protecting his kind.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

He carries the same question in his eyes, though I will not force an old grief upon him.

The Hidden Watcher

The Hidden Watcher

I cannot tell you whether Bartholomew would recognize the world that remains, Belron. But I remember his conviction clearly: extinction must be resisted, even when survival demands solitude.

The answer comes plainly, but the halted procession has cost precious time. The captain signals the riders onward, leaving Old Dalv’s account shadowed by the urgency of reaching safer ground.

“Ezuri runs up and give Belron a playful peck on the cheek telling him to cheer up and talk to her instead of the musty old man. Belron moves forward as the groups presses forward.”

The procession moves again along the pale-stoned road. Old Dalv leads beneath the ancient trees, while the wagons creak forward and riders keep close around Traver.

Ezuri suddenly hurries past the nearest wagon, her red braid swinging over her green cloak. She reaches Belron with a bright, mischievous smile.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Cheer up, handsome. Talk to me instead of that musty old man.

Before the moment can settle, Ezuri rises lightly on her toes and gives Belron a playful peck on the cheek. Then she slips ahead, laughing under her breath.

Belron tenses, caught between surprise and the watchful road, but he continues forward as the groups press onward through the frost-laden pines.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Ezuri, you do enjoy making an entrance. Try not to distract him from watching the path.

Ezuri

Ezuri

I would never distract him from anything important, Alena. I am only helping him look less gloomy.

“"What would you want to talk about Ezuri?"”

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Belron Valerion

Belron Valerion

What would you want to talk about, Ezuri?

Belron matches Ezuri’s pace beneath the frost-laden branches. His question draws her teasing attention away from the road and toward him.

Ezuri

Ezuri

I want to know what makes you so serious, handsome. You speak of duty, danger, and protecting Alena, but what do you want for yourself?

Ezuri walks backward for several steps, studying him with bright amusement. Behind them, Alena’s expression grows quieter as she listens from beside the wagon.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Tell me about the things you enjoy when no one needs saving. Music, feasting, wandering, or perhaps the company of a charming elf?

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

That is a generous list of possibilities, Ezuri. Perhaps let Belron answer before you decide which one interests him.

Ezuri’s smile widens, pleased that her teasing has drawn a reaction. She slows beside Belron, while Alena keeps pace on his other side, newly attentive to every word.

“"I enjoy the quiet of the woods, and the company of animals. I enjoy Alena's company, and I suppose I do enjoy music though I have no heard any in a long time. As for the company of a charming elf, you are the first elf I have ever met."”

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Belron Valerion

Belron Valerion

I enjoy the quiet of the woods and the company of animals. I enjoy Alena’s company too. I suppose I enjoy music, though I have not heard any in a long time. As for a charming elf, you are the first elf I have ever met.

Ezuri’s playful stride slows. The admission reaches her more sincerely than the teasing, while Alena’s attention sharpens beside the wagon and the woodland path winds beneath them.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Your first elf? Then I should make a memorable impression. I might even teach you a song, if you promise to listen closely.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

He may listen, Ezuri, but do not mistake his honesty for an invitation to claim all his attention.

Ezuri glances toward Alena with open amusement, pleased to have drawn that boundary into the open. Her smile says she has gained a useful advantage, even without pressing further.

Ezuri

Ezuri

There it is. I wondered whether you would react if I offered him something you could not. Do not worry, Alena. I only wanted to know how much he values my company.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Now you know. He values honesty, quiet, and chosen company. If you want his trust, Ezuri, teasing him is a poor substitute for earning it.

“Ezuri playfully jest that maybe she will have to show Belron something in private to earn his trust. Belron blushes.”

Ezuri

Ezuri

Perhaps I will have to show Belron something in private, then. A secret path, a ranger’s trick, or whatever earns his trust most completely.

Ezuri’s green eyes gleam with mischief as she leans closer to Belron. Her tone remains playful, but the suggestion is pointed enough to draw Alena’s attention.

Belron blushes beneath Ezuri’s teasing and tenses, hoping the exchange will not grow beyond harmless flirtation. The wagons continue rolling along the pale-stoned road.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

A private lesson may earn curiosity, Ezuri, but trust is built in the open. If you want Belron’s, you should try honesty instead.

Ezuri

Ezuri

How serious you are. Very well, Alena. I will keep my secrets modest and my intentions visible, for now.

Ezuri gives Belron an exaggeratedly innocent smile before turning toward the trail. Alena walks closer on his other side, her shoulder nearly brushing his arm.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

You need not look so alarmed, Belron. Ezuri is testing whether I will react, and I have no intention of letting her choose what happens between us.

“"I know Alena. I am just not used to the flirting."”

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Belron Valerion

Belron Valerion

I know Alena. I am just not used to flirting.

Belron says it plainly, though the admission leaves him exposed between them. Alena’s shoulder remains near his arm, while Ezuri slows ahead on the path.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

That is honest, at least. You do not have to become practiced at it for my sake.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Not used to flirting? Then your first elf has found a particularly entertaining weakness.

Ezuri’s grin sharpens as she turns the confession into leverage. Alena’s expression tightens, not with anger, but with the clear realization that Ezuri now knows where Belron is vulnerable.

Alena Knight

Alena Knight

Ezuri, do not turn his honesty into another game. Belron, I appreciate you telling me, but I will not compete for your attention.

Ezuri

Ezuri

Fair enough. I will keep my intentions visible, then. Though I make no promise to stop being charming.

“Dalv leads then along the road for most of the day until they finally crest a hill and see Rostrum in the distance. They make camp for the night. Belron sits by a tree when suddenly Ezuri sits on his lap and pulls out a flute offering to play him a song.”
