Tracks Beneath the Trees

Kerson walks beyond the village gates, cloak fastened and blade secured, while the last lanterns fade behind him. The road bends beneath dark, wind-stirred trees.

An overturned handcart blocks the road ahead. Beside it, an elven woman lies wounded in the dust, one hand clamped around a bloodied strip of child’s clothing.

Saelith

Saelith

Please... do not leave us. They took my child into the trees.

Her husband lies motionless near the cart, his body partly covered by a torn blanket. Broken crates and scattered provisions mark the roadside ambush.

Fresh hoofprints and bootmarks cut through the damp earth, leading beneath the trees. The impressions remain sharply defined, as though the bandits vanished only moments ago.

Saelith

Saelith

There were four of them. They killed him, bound my child, and rode toward the old watch road. I could not stop them.

The forest swallows the trail beyond the first line of trunks. Behind Kerson, the road remains empty; before him, the woman’s desperate gaze waits for his answer.

Kerson steps closer, boots sinking into damp dust. The woman’s gaze fixes on his scar, then drops to the blade secured at his side.

Saelith

Saelith

Stay back. Please. I have seen men promise help before.

She scrambles backward against the overturned cart, clutching the bloodied strip tighter. Her wounded arm gives way, and the cloth falls into the dirt between them.

Saelith

Saelith

My name is Saelith. I will not trust you with it, not while you stand there like death.

Saelith reaches for the cloth but stops short, her eyes fixed on Kerson. The fresh trail into the trees remains open behind her, while her suspicion now bars the road.

Saelith

Saelith

If you mean to help my child, follow the trail. Do not come closer to me.

"Very well, then I will expect a reward when I return with her." Kerson says as he leaves.

Very well, then I will expect a reward when I return with her.

Kerson turns from Saelith and enters the trees, following the fresh hoofprints and bootmarks beneath tangled branches. Behind him, she remains beside the cart, silent.

The trail descends through wet undergrowth, then breaks across a stony streambed. Water has blurred the impressions, leaving only a few deep hoofprints on the far bank.

Kerson reaches the crossing too late to preserve the trail. A snapped leather cord lies among the stones, threaded with a small wooden bead painted silver.

Beyond the stream, two paths divide. The wider track climbs toward the old watch road, while smaller footprints and a torn strip of blue cloth lead beneath the thorn trees.

The bandits’ route is no longer certain, but the child’s trail offers a quieter alternative. The bead rests in the mud, marked with a tiny carved crescent.

Kerson follows the smaller footprints beneath the thorn trees, lowering his cloak against the hooked branches. The silver-painted bead remains beside the trail, untouched.

The passage winds through brambles and pale ferns, where snapped twigs and blue cloth mark the child’s route. Hoofprints fade behind him beneath the deeper shade.

The child’s footprints are small, but they are clear.

Beyond the thorns, the trail reaches a sunken hollow. A rough camp lies abandoned there, its fire reduced to gray ash and its bedrolls scattered.

A faint whimper rises from beneath a fallen cedar at the hollow’s edge. The child is there, bound with cord but alive, watching through the roots.

Taren

Taren

Are you with my mother?

The child’s footprints end at the cedar, and the bandits’ trail continues north toward the old watch road. For this moment, Kerson has found the one he followed.

"I am with your mother, Saelith. Tell me your name child." you murmur patiently as you lean down and cut the boys bindings with your knife.

Kerson lowers himself beside the fallen cedar and draws his knife. He keeps his movements slow as he cuts through the cord binding the boy’s wrists.

The severed bindings fall into the leaves. The boy rubs his freed wrists, then crawls carefully from beneath the cedar’s roots, still watching Kerson.

Taren

Taren

I am Taren. Mother said to hide, but they found me. Are you really taking me back to her?

Taren rises unsteadily, his legs numb from restraint. Beyond the hollow, the northward trail remains open, while the gray camp gives no sign of the bandits’ return.

Taren

Taren

They went that way. One of them said they would come back after dark, but I do not know when.

"Then we go back to your mother before they return." you murmur, guiding the boy back down the trail.

Taren

Taren

Will she be waiting by the cart? She said she would find me.

The thorn passage gives way to the streambed. Kerson leads Taren across the stones and follows the broken trail back toward the road, moving swiftly and quietly.

Saelith rises when she hears the branches shift. Her face tightens with disbelief, then breaks as Taren runs from Kerson’s side into her arms.

Saelith

Saelith

Taren. My son. You came back to me.

She holds him fiercely beside the overturned cart, tears bright on her face. The forest behind them remains dark and watchful, but the child is safely returned.

We need to leave before the bandits return. Where were you going?

Kerson helps Saelith gather the scattered provisions and lifts the torn blanket from the cart. The wheel is split, and the remaining supplies barely fill one sack.

Saelith

Saelith

We were bound for the river settlement east of here. My sister lives there. But I cannot walk that far, and Taren has had no food since morning.

Saelith tries to stand, keeping one hand on the cart, but her wounded arm buckles. Taren clings to her waist, staring toward the trees.

Taren

Taren

The road is where they went. If we take it, they might see us again.

Saelith

Saelith

We cannot leave the cart and cross the forest on foot. I would slow you down, and Taren cannot carry the provisions.

The gathered supplies sit in a single sack, while the broken cart blocks the road and the thorn passage offers no easy route. Saelith looks toward the dark trees, waiting for another way.

He lifts Saelith into his arms, securing her wounded side against his chest, then gestures for Taren to take the smaller sack and stay close.

Saelith

Saelith

You should not have to carry me. But thank you. Taren, do exactly as he says.

Kerson guides Taren east through the trees, choosing firm ground beside the road rather than the exposed track. Saelith’s weight makes each step deliberate.

Taren

Taren

I can carry the food. I will not drop it. Is the river settlement still far?

A strap bites into Kerson’s shoulder until the leather splits with a sharp crack. He catches the sack before it falls, but several wrapped provisions spill into the leaves.

For the rest of the day, they follow firm ground beneath the trees. Saelith stays quiet in his arms, while Taren keeps pace with the smaller sack.

Taren

Taren

The river settlement should be beyond the next ridge. Mother’s sister will help us there.

At twilight, Kerson finds a sheltered hollow beneath broad pines. He lowers Saelith gently against a sturdy tree, supporting her wounded side before releasing her.

Saelith

Saelith

You carried me all day. Your shoulder is bleeding where the strap broke.

The torn leather has scraped Kerson’s shoulder raw, and two provisions were lost in the leaves. He sets the remaining bundles beside Taren, then gathers dry branches.

Soon a small fire catches between the stones, sending warmth through the hollow. Taren settles close to Saelith, and the forest darkens around their first safe camp.

Kerson sets a small pot above the fire and begins preparing the remaining provisions. Before he can reach for the water, Saelith leans toward his injured shoulder.

Saelith

Saelith

Hold still. A wound does not become nothing because you refuse to name it.

She tears a clean strip from the edge of her sleeve and wets it from the waterskin. Taren watches quietly as she cleans the raw scrape left by the broken strap.

Saelith

Saelith

You carried me through the forest while this was bleeding. Let me at least keep it from worsening.

Saelith binds the cloth firmly around Kerson’s shoulder, careful not to impede his arm. The fire pops, and the scent of warming grain fills the sheltered hollow.

Saelith accepts her portion with her uninjured hand. Taren takes his eagerly, settling beside the fire while steam rises into the cold evening air.

Thank you. You brought me back, carried Mother, and now you share our supper.
