Buttercup

Gwendolyn leads Heldric from the ruins into the beech forest, one arm beneath his shoulder as he limps over roots and loose stones. Buttercup scouts ahead.

Heldric

Heldric

Steady, Gwendolyn. I can walk, though these trees seem determined to finish what the trolls began.

The forest swallows the ruins behind them. Beech leaves hush the wind, but each uneven step makes Heldric lean more heavily against her support.

Buttercup pauses beside a half-hidden trail where an old Ranger sign is cut into the bark. Her ears prick, and a low growl rolls toward the trees.

Heldric

Heldric

That mark is ours, though I have not seen it in years. The trail may hide us from the trolls, if we can reach it.

Beyond the sign, the path winds through bracken and shadow, offering concealment. Between them and its shelter lies rough ground, steep enough to drain Heldric’s remaining strength.

Heldric

Heldric

We should choose quickly. I can cross that ground once, perhaps, but not twice if my leg gives way.

Gwendolyn follows Buttercup onto the hidden Ranger trail, keeping an arm beneath Heldric’s shoulder as the wolfhound threads between bracken and beech roots.

Heldric

Heldric

Aye, this path remembers us. Keep me upright, and I’ll spend no strength complaining about it.

The trail climbs sharply through rough ground. Heldric’s boot slips on loose shale, and Gwendolyn catches his full weight before he falls, wrenching her shoulder.

Heldric

Heldric

Your shoulder took that, not me. Give me a breath, then we’ll move before the forest carries our noise.

After a brief pause, Gwendolyn helps him onward. Buttercup leads them beneath a screen of low branches, where the old trail bends into deeper woodland.

They reach the Ranger trail’s sheltered hollow. Moss-covered stones form a narrow resting place, hidden from the ruins and screened by dense beech growth.

Heldric

Heldric

There. We are concealed, and I am still standing. Your hound chose well, Gwendolyn.

“"She's smarter than the both of us together. Let me have another look at that leg."”

SUCCESS (Fair Healing, rolled +1)

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

She’s smarter than both of us together. Let me have another look at that leg.

Gwendolyn settles Heldric against the moss-covered stones and kneels beside his injured leg. Buttercup watches from the hollow’s entrance, ears raised toward the forest.

Heldric

Heldric

Aye, examine it. The bleeding has slowed, and I can bear weight, but the joint remains stiff.

Gwendolyn loosens the binding enough to inspect the wound, checking the swelling, the bandage, and Heldric’s ankle. The limb is bruised and strained, but no bone shifts beneath her careful touch.

Heldric

Heldric

That look tells me the truth of it. Badly battered, not broken. I can travel, though every slope will argue with me.

She retightens the clean binding, supports the joint with a folded strip of cloak, and tests his foot against the ground. Heldric stands without buckling.

Heldric

Heldric

Better. Your hound found us shelter, and you have made the leg serviceable. We can move when you are ready.

“"I don't mind your arm around me, but now is not the time. Let me find you a walking stick."”

SUCCESS (Fair Survival, rolled -1)

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

I don't mind your arm around me, but now is not the time. Let me find you a walking stick.

Gwendolyn searches the hollow’s edge, moving through fern and beech shadow while Heldric steadies himself against the mossy stones. Buttercup watches the forest entrance.

She finds a fallen hazel branch, stout and straight, but it catches beneath a tangle of roots. Gwendolyn wrenches it free, snapping a dry limb with a sharp crack.

Heldric

Heldric

That noise will carry, but the stick is sound. Bring it here before my leg decides to argue again.

A splinter opens Gwendolyn’s palm as she strips the branch clean. She wraps the small cut with a spare cloth, then plants the finished staff beside Heldric.

Heldric

Heldric

A proper walking staff, and quickly made. With this, I can keep my weight off the injured joint.

Heldric grips the hazel branch and tests it against the ground. It bears him firmly, while Buttercup’s low growl reminds them that the forest has heard the break.

Walking Staff

“"No more talking, let's just move."”

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -2)

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

No more talking. Let’s move.

Gwendolyn takes Heldric’s arm and guides him from the hollow, matching her pace to the hazel staff’s steady taps. Buttercup slips ahead along the hidden trail.

Heldric

Heldric

Aye. The staff bears me well. Keep to the beech shade, and I’ll spend no breath we do not need.

They climb through fern and rootbound earth without stopping. Heldric leans heavily once, but the staff holds, and Gwendolyn keeps him upright until the ground levels beneath ancient trees.

A brittle branch breaks beneath Gwendolyn’s boot with a sharp crack. The sound rolls through the woodland, costing them stealth, while Buttercup freezes and listens.

Heldric

Heldric

There is the cost of haste. Still, we are clear of the ruins and safely on the Ranger trail.

The concealed path carries them beyond the steep ground to a sheltered ridge screened by beech trunks. Heldric remains on his feet, staff planted firmly, while Buttercup watches the forest behind.

“"Trolls are slow, and from this point, on unfamiliar ground. Just keep moving."”

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -2)

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

Trolls are slow, and this is unfamiliar ground to them. Just keep moving.

Gwendolyn guides Heldric onward along the hidden Ranger trail. She sets a firm pace beneath the beech canopy, while Buttercup scouts ahead and the hazel staff taps steadily behind them.

Heldric

Heldric

Aye. Their weight and noise will betray them long before they understand this path. I can keep pace if you do not let me linger.

The trail bends around the ridge and descends into a sheltered hollow marked by three weathered stones. A concealed Ranger cache lies beneath the roots, and the forest closes safely behind them.

The hurried crossing costs Gwendolyn a fresh tear in her already strained shoulder. She keeps Heldric upright, but her arm begins to tremble beneath his weight.

Heldric

Heldric

There. We have reached a safe waystation. Rest that shoulder, Gwendolyn. You got me here without giving the trolls our trail.

Buttercup settles at the hollow’s entrance, listening toward the distant ruins. Heldric lowers himself beside the hidden stones, secure on the Ranger trail and beyond immediate pursuit.

“She pulls some bread and a water bottle from her satchel. "Eat something. You must be starved."”

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

Eat something. You must be starved.

Gwendolyn lowers her satchel beside Heldric and draws out bread and a water bottle. She offers both beneath the beech canopy, while Buttercup keeps watch at the hollow’s entrance.

Heldric

Heldric

Aye, I am. The trolls left little time for meals, and less for comfort. You have thought of what I needed before I asked.

Heldric accepts the bread with one hand and braces the hazel staff with the other. He eats slowly, then drinks, the color returning faintly to his weathered face.

Heldric

Heldric

That is better. The strength will serve us well, and your shoulder deserves the same care when we have reached safer ground.

He folds the remaining bread carefully and secures the water bottle at his belt. Around them, the hidden hollow remains quiet, its three stones mossy beneath the roots.

Heldric

Heldric

I can stand again when you say so, Gwendolyn. For this moment, the trolls remain behind us, and the trail is ours.

“"I have some experience with trolls. They're slow and dull witted and can't follow a trail ten feet without bumping into something. If we just keep going, we should be safe enough. There are healers in the Angle who can patch us both up in no time."”

SUCCESS (Fair Survival, rolled +0)

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn

I have experience with trolls. They are slow and dull-witted, and cannot follow a trail ten feet without striking something. We should be safe if we keep moving. Healers in the Angle can patch us both up.

Heldric

Heldric

Then onward. I trust your judgment, though I confess the thought of a healer sounds better than another ruin.

Gwendolyn leads Heldric along the concealed trail toward the Angle. Distance and beech shadow swallow their tracks, while Buttercup scouts ahead through the fern.

The march taxes Gwendolyn’s strained shoulder. Heldric’s weight shifts suddenly on a slope, and she catches him, reopening the small cut across her palm against the hazel staff.

Heldric

Heldric

That hand is bleeding again. Set me down if you must, Gwendolyn. I will not have your rescue become another injury.

She binds the palm while walking, and the hidden trail descends into the Angle. Rangers emerge from the trees, recognize Heldric, and guide them toward a sheltered healing hall.
