The freight stairs choke with damp and steam. Juno stops dead, the case in her hands lighting up green, bright as a signal flare in the corridor gloom.
A beat later, the truth clicks into place. The black wafer and its chip cradle were not the prize, they were the bait. The case has been shouting their position this whole time.

Juno
No. No, that light was supposed to mean sealed.
Heavy boots slam closer below, answering the beacon. Marek flinches toward the stairwell, while the steam from the puddles swirls around Ki Akio's legs like smoke.

Marek
We are lit up. They have us.
Juno tightens on the case, then snaps her head toward Ki Akio, urgency turning sharp and raw.

Juno
Move. Now. Drop it or carry it, but do not let them box us in.

Get past the incoming hunters
“fleave the box find high ground for an ambush”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +4)
Ki Akio drops the glowing case and moves. His boots slap the wet steps once, then he cuts across the rail and climbs fast into the narrow catwalk above the landing.
Below, the beacon keeps burning on the deck, but he is already out of its clean line. Steam and shadows swallow his outline as he reaches cover beside a corroded support brace.
Marek follows the movement with a sharp look up, then drags himself toward the stair wall, clearing space under Ki Akio's new angle.

Juno
Good. Hold that height. If they come through, they come into your line.
The green case skids, clacks against metal, and flashes once against the runoff. For a heartbeat, the light reflects off a service hatch half-hidden behind Ki Akio's perch.
A thin maintenance ladder is there, already cracked open, giving him a second route above the stairs. Down below, the first hunter steps onto the landing, close enough for the sound to carry.

“aim and give the signal to open fire”
SUCCESS (Superb Firearms, rolled +2)

Ki Akio levels the hand cannon from the catwalk, sighting through steam and rust. He gives the signal, clean and sharp, and the stairwell answers with the first crack of gunfire.
The hunter below jerks back into the spray of sparks. Juno snaps off a second shot from cover, and Marek lunges to the wall, using the blast flash to slide farther off the landing.

Juno
Keep that angle. Don’t let them stack on the stairs.
Ki Akio’s shot drives the lead hunter down a step, buying space. The glowing case is still burning on the landing, but the hunters stop treating it like a prize and start treating it like bait.

Marek
There’s your opening. Move now.
Above Ki Akio, the cracked maintenance ladder rattles under the shock of another impact from below. Steam thickens, hiding the upper rung and the service hatch behind him.

Juno
If we stay on this stair, they box us in. Cut through the hatch or drop the case and run.
“move quickly sence we have them on the back foot they don't know if we are dug in and plan to maintain position”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

Ki Akio slips off the catwalk and lands light on the landing edge, using the steam and sparks as cover. The hand cannon stays up, but his body is already moving for the service hatch above the stairs.
Marek flinches back from the open stair line, then shoves himself toward the wall to clear Ki Akio’s path. Juno angles her gun down the steps, guarding the gap.
The beacon case still glows on the landing, but the hunters below hesitate, split between the bright bait and the vanished angle of fire.
Ki Akio reaches the hatch seam and gets both hands on it, shoulders turning into the pull.
Metal shrieks overhead, and the cracked ladder shakes loose more steam. For a second, the hatch gives just enough to show darkness beyond.

Juno
Get through. I’ll keep them off the landing.
Marek glances from the hatch to the stairs below, then braces himself beside the case, waiting for Ki Akio’s next move.
“hurry every one up since Juno is providing cover fire, once up take up a flank position if any follow up it well be a easy kill”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled -2)
Ki Akio hauls the hatch wide and drives the others through. Steam blasts past his shoulders as the landing empties behind him.
Juno slips up first, then Marek, both of them half-blinded and moving fast. The beacon case is left exposed on the landing below.

Juno
Go, now. I am not holding this stair forever.
Ki Akio follows through the opening and snaps into a flank on the dark side of the hatch, hand cannon up, vibro sword low.
A burst of fire chews the stair rail where he stood a second ago, showering sparks across the landing.
Marek kicks the hatch panel higher until it catches, turning the gap into a narrow choke point instead of a retreat line.

Marek
That is our cover. Move, before they force it.

“ok we need to change tactics since we clearly did not time that well, adiquate but not great. close the hatch dar it closed and escape down a fire escape”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)
Ki Akio snaps the hatch shut and slams the bar home. Metal takes the hit below, hard and ugly, and the stairwell sound cuts off behind him.
He is already moving as the panel seals. Juno grabs the wall for balance, then pivots toward the fire escape ladder tucked in the passage recess.

Juno
That works. Move.
Marek snatches up the discarded beacon case by its strap, then shoves it deeper under his coat like it might still bite.

Marek
They bought the wrong trail. Good.
Ki Akio drops to the fire escape first, the cold rung biting under his boots. The ladder flexes, but holds.

Ki Akio
The hatch is barred. The route down is open.
Above them, the sealed hatch shudders once more. Below, the passage opens onto open air and the drop to the service alley waits for the next move.
