The black-root bridge tears apart behind Wolfpride, roots snapping and plunging toward the sealed forest. Far beyond, the standing stones still burn with pale symbols, their waiting force undiminished.
From the widening gap, a skeletal hound claws upward. Its exposed bones are blackened like old ivory, and the same symbols glow across its empty skull.
A torn strip of the hooded figure's cloak hangs between its teeth. The hound plants its forepaws on the root bridge, neither lunging nor retreating.
It turns toward the rootway swallowed by blackness. Below, silent stars wheel upside down as another section of bridge breaks loose and falls into the depth.

Wolfpride
The cloak carries no scent, but the symbols match the stones.
The hound waits at the darkness, skull angled toward the unseen passage. Behind Wolfpride, the collapsing bridge shortens the space between pursuit and abyss.
Above, the distant bell tolls once. The sound passes through bone, root, and starless depth, while the hound remains poised for Wolfpride's next step.

“Look for a tavern”
FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

Wolfpride searches the impossible horizon for a tavern: chimney smoke, lamplight, a roofline, any sign of mortal shelter. The upside-down stars offer no road or settlement.
He tests the three rootways with his gaze. Frost reflects no windows, red embers reveal no doorway, and the black passage swallows every suggestion of walls.
The skeletal hound watches his search, then lowers its skull toward the darkness. The cloak strip remains clenched between its teeth, symbols faintly pulsing.
Wolfpride finds a shape beyond the black rootway, but it is not a tavern. A crooked arch rises there, formed from roots and pale bone, with no door beneath it.
As he fixes upon the arch, the bridge behind him sheds another length into the starless depth. The frost and ember paths dim, leaving the arch as the only visible landmark.
No hearth, keeper, or drink waits beyond the bridge. The search has instead revealed a threshold that seems to answer the hound's stolen token, while the way back continues to vanish.

“Look for a tavern”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +4)

Wolfpride searches beyond the three rootways, and the impossible horizon answers. A warm amber glow appears beneath the frost path, shaped like windows behind drifting snow.
The frost peels aside without being touched, revealing a small tavern perched on a broad root. Its stone walls, green shutters, and smoking chimney belong unmistakably to the mortal world.
A narrow side path unfolds from the bridge toward the tavern, solid beneath Wolfpride's paws. It avoids both the skeletal hound and the crooked arch.
Through the nearest window, a middle-aged woman with copper hair, a blue wool dress, and a brass key at her belt sets a steaming bowl on a wooden table.

Maelin Voss
Traveler! Come in before the rootway changes its mind. The first bowl is free, and I know where this road leads.
The tavern door swings open, spilling firelight across the root bridge. Behind the keeper, a wall map marks a route back toward the void, while Skeletal Hound remains fixed on the black passage.

Wolfpride
The tavern has a mortal hearth and a marked route.
“Ask if any unexplained heart attacks have been going on recently”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Wolfpride
Have any unexplained heart attacks been going on recently?
The question crosses the threshold with Wolfpride's voice low and intent. The keeper's hand stills above the steaming bowl, and the fire briefly gutters blue.

Maelin Voss
Aye. Three hearts stopped in the last fortnight, all without wound, poison, or warning. Folk called it a curse and kept their doors barred.
The keeper sets the bowl down too sharply. Broth splashes across the table and hisses on the hearthstone, while the brass key at her belt begins to tremble.

Maelin Voss
The dead all heard a bell beforehand. One swore a black hound watched from the lane. I thought the tale belonged to drunken fear, until you arrived.
Beyond the open door, the skeletal hound raises its skull. A pulse of pale symbols travels through its bones, and the tavern's windows frost from within.

Maelin Voss
You have your answer, traveler. But you have also announced yourself to whatever tolls that bell. Stay by the fire, or leave before it tolls again.

“We're these people's name and face revealed”

The tavern keeper steps fully into the firelight, no longer hidden behind the open door. She is a sturdy middle-aged woman with copper hair braided over one shoulder, warm brown skin, and a square, weathered face marked by a pale scar across her left cheek.

Maelin Voss
Name’s Maelin Voss. I keep the Hearthroot Tavern, such as it is, and I remember every face that crosses my threshold.
Her blue wool dress is faded at the elbows, and a leather apron hangs beneath it. The brass key at her belt settles as the fire returns to its ordinary gold.

Maelin Voss
The three who died were Joran Pell, a shepherd; Nessa Vale, who sold herbs; and old Bram Tallow, the bridge warden. Their faces still visit my dreams.
Maelin's expression tightens with recognition as she studies Wolfpride's mismatched eyes, then glances toward the skeletal hound beyond the threshold.

Maelin Voss
No other living traveler bears that gaze, nor walks beside a bone hound beneath a ringing bell. Now you know my name, traveler, and I know yours.

“Ask if she's seen a black notebook named a death note”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Wolfpride
Have you seen a black notebook called a death note?
Maelin’s weathered face loses its warmth. She reaches beneath the tavern counter and draws out a black notebook bound in cracked leather, its cover marked by a silver bell.

Maelin Voss
Aye. This is the death note. I found it beneath Bram Tallow’s bridgewarden post after the third bell.
She lays the notebook beside the steaming bowl. Frost withdraws from the nearest window, while the skeletal hound outside presses its skull toward the threshold.

Maelin Voss
The names inside are written before each heart stops. Joran, Nessa, Bram, and others whose deaths have not yet come.
The notebook opens by itself. Fresh ink crawls across the next empty page, forming a single name beneath the bell symbol.

Maelin Voss
Wolfpride. It knows you now.
“Ask Were you who wrote these names and if so what shinagami is with you currently”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Wolfpride
Were you the one who wrote these names, and if so, what shinigami is with you currently?
Maelin studies the ink crawling across the page. Outside, the skeletal hound lowers its skull, and the bell-mark on the notebook gives one cold pulse.

Maelin Voss
No. I found the book, and I have never held a quill to its pages. The names appear by their own dark law.
She points toward Skeletal Hound without crossing the threshold. Its black bones remain motionless, but pale symbols move beneath them like slow-burning stars.

Maelin Voss
That is the shinigami bound to it, though folk here call it the Bell Hound. It serves the note, not me.

Maelin Voss
It came when Bram’s name appeared. Since then, it has waited outside, carrying the cloak-token of the one who first brought this curse.
The fresh ink finishes Wolfpride’s name. Beneath it, a second line writes itself: the bearer of the bell comes before the next toll.
“Says Bram you say well then this isn't my death note if you come across another notebook that has a shinagami named reuik then find me”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Wolfpride
Bram, you say. Then this is not my death note. If you find another notebook with a shinigami named Reuik, find me.
Wolfpride’s words settle over the open notebook. The fresh ink beneath his name shivers, then fades to a dull gray while the bell-mark stops pulsing.

Maelin Voss
Bram, aye. And I understand you. If another notebook bears the name Reuik, I will seek you out and put it in your paws.
Maelin closes the death note and wraps it in a square of dark cloth. The brass key at her belt turns once toward the tavern’s back wall.

Maelin Voss
But this book has claimed your name, whether it is yours or not. Its law may recognize a bearer before it recognizes ownership.
Outside, the Skeletal Hound lifts its skull toward the unseen heights. A distant bell answers, yet the tavern’s fire remains steady and the door stays open.

Maelin Voss
Go carefully, Wolfpride. I will remember Reuik, and I will remember where you stood when you asked.

“Thanks her and then teleports away”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Wolfpride
Thank you, Maelin.
Wolfpride’s thanks pass softly through the firelit tavern. Maelin inclines her head, one hand resting over the cloth-wrapped death note.

Maelin Voss
Go with the road beneath your feet, Wolfpride. May it lead you where the bell cannot.
Arcane light gathers around Wolfpride’s scarred form, green and blue sparks twisting from his mismatched eyes into a silent ring beneath his paws. The hearth flame bends toward him.
The tavern, the steaming bowl, and Maelin’s steady figure fold into a single amber reflection. Space yields without sound, carrying Wolfpride away from the Hearthroot Tavern.
He arrives upon a lonely ledge of black root beneath a vast violet sky. Far below, upside-down stars drift through silver mist, and no mortal hearth stands nearby.

Maelin Voss
He carries the bell’s notice now. I pray the road remembers him kindly.
