The path remains empty behind Alerie, the sealed archway gone beneath wet roots. Laryen stayed in the hidden chamber, while cold mist drifts between the black pines ahead.

A frightened boy steps from the fog. Tovin is slight and pale, with a narrow, freckled face, perhaps ten years old, with dark wet hair, a patched brown coat, and trembling hands clutching an old bell clapper.

Tovin

Tovin

Don't hurt me. I heard you calling from deeper in the trees, but you weren't there.

Forest water drips from Tovin's sleeves and muddied boots. A rusted house key hangs around his wrist on a frayed cord, stamped with the crest of Veyrfen's vanished founders.

Tovin

Tovin

My name is Tovin. I followed your voice because it sounded like my sister, but then the trees started moving.

Alerie

Alerie

The key is old, but its crest is deliberately preserved.

Far within the mist, a bell gives one dull chime. Tovin flinches and looks past Alerie toward the forest road, tightening his grip on the clapper.

Learn who is calling Tovin

“*Alerie stilled and her features usually hard and stern softened slightly, she nodded lightly and wrapped ar arm around Tovins shoulders.* "Come, We'll get you into the village, until then tell me why that bell made you flinch so."”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Alerie's stern features soften. She nods once, slips an arm around Tovin's shoulders, and guides him toward the mist-veiled road to Veyrfen.

Alerie

Alerie

Come. We'll get you into the village. Until then, tell me why that bell made you flinch.

Tovin stiffens beneath her arm, then leans into the warmth. The old clapper trembles against his coat as another faint echo dies among the pines.

Tovin

Tovin

It rings when someone below wakes up.

Tovin

Tovin

My sister heard it three nights ago. She went to the old bell house, and the doors opened for her.

He swallows and stares toward the distant roofs hidden beyond the fog. The founder's crest on his key catches a dull streak of gray light.

Tovin

Tovin

She never came back. Since then, the bell rings whenever the mist brings someone new.

“*Alerie nodded and rubbed the boys arms carefully.* "Something is manipulating the bell then? something not good?" *She inquired gently as they reached the gates of Veyrfen.*”

Something is manipulating the bell, then? Something not good?

Alerie rubs Tovin’s arms carefully through his patched coat, steadying his trembling hands as they walk. Ahead, Veyrfen’s dark gates emerge from the mist.

Tovin

Tovin

I think so. The bell house was locked, but the doors opened when my sister touched them.

The gates stand beneath a weathered founder’s crest, their iron bars beaded with rain. No sentry calls out as Alerie and Tovin reach the threshold.

Tovin

It spoke in her voice after she went inside. It told me to wait, but I ran. I do not think the thing below is good.

The gate opens inward without a hand touching it. Beyond lies a narrow street of shuttered houses, and somewhere beneath the stones, the bell gives a quiet answering chime.

“*She nodded and lead Tovin to an older woman who had begun waving Tovin down, she was too old to be his mother so maybe a grandmother.* "Do you know her?" *She asked quietly as they approached the woman, she wasn't willing to leave the child alone with an adult he didnt know and didnt trust. Not after what He'd told her.*”

Alerie guides Tovin into the narrow street. An elderly woman waves from a stoop, bent and slight beneath a dark wool shawl, her silver hair braided tightly around a weathered face.

Alerie

Alerie

Do you know her?

Tovin

Tovin

Yes. That is Mistress Elswyn. She keeps the bell house records. My grandmother knew her.

Tovin stops beneath Alerie's arm, recognizing the woman but not moving toward her. Mistress Elswyn lowers her waving hand and studies Alerie with guarded attention.

Mistress Elswyn

Mistress Elswyn

Tovin, child, come inside. Your grandmother has been searching every lane for you.

Tovin

Tovin

No. She is not my grandmother. And I will not go inside if you take me near the bell house.

The old woman’s expression tightens. Tovin’s frayed key-cord catches on Alerie’s glove and snaps, dropping the founder’s key into the rainwater between their boots.

“*Alerie nodded and raised her hand to stop Mistress Elswyn from touching Tovin while he picked up the key.* "Until his grandmother comes for him herself I'll be taking care of him. If he doesn't want to go with you he won't."”

Alerie raises one hand between Mistress Elswyn and Tovin, halting the old woman before she can reach him. Tovin crouches and retrieves the founder’s key from the rainwater.

Until his grandmother comes for him herself, I’ll be taking care of him. If he doesn’t want to go with you, he won’t.

Tovin closes his fingers around the key and returns beneath Alerie’s arm. His shoulders remain tense, but his grip on the bell clapper loosens.

Mistress Elswyn

Mistress Elswyn

You presume much, stranger. His grandmother is waiting, and this street is no place for a frightened child after sundown.

Tovin

Tovin

She is not my grandmother. I know who she is, and she never told me to call her that.

Mistress Elswyn’s gaze drops to the founder’s key, then lifts to Alerie’s golden eyes. The village remains silent around them, shutters sealed against the mist.

Then bring him to the records house, not the bell house. If you mean to guard him, you should learn what his family opened.

“*Alerie glared at the woman and began leading Tovin away towards the tavern and inn where she'd book them a night, feed him and ensure his safety even if it costed her own life. That was a fault of her own, she could not fathom leaving a child to their own devices.* *As they entered the tavern Aleries eye settled on a man who's shoulder plate had a familiar crest engraved on it, a fellow witcher, she held Tovin a bit closer and lead him to a table.* "Order whatever you like, I have plenty gold to spare."”

Alerie gives Mistress Elswyn one hard look, then leads Tovin down the rain-dark street. He stays tucked against her side as they enter a crowded tavern warmed by hearthfire.

A broad-shouldered middle-aged woman in a russet dress and white apron looks up from behind the counter. Her iron-gray hair is cropped short, and a burn scar marks her chin.

Tovin stares at the stew pots, then at Alerie, as she settles him at a table. The keeper brings bread, broth, and a room key without questioning the arrangement.

The boy can have the small room upstairs. Two beds, a stout lock, and no charge for the first night.

Near the hearth, a tall middle-aged man watches over a travel-stained black coat. A familiar witcher crest is engraved on his shoulder plate, its edges worn smooth by years of use.

Another witcher in Veyrfen. I wondered what had drawn the old bells' attention this time.
