The path to Veyrfen winds beneath black pines and pale mist. Alerie walks ahead while a young adult man follows, swaying cheerfully in a green, patched coat, copper curls escaping his feathered cap.

Laryen
A traveler walks where lanterns fail, beneath a moon that dares not shine alone!
As Laryen sings, every roadside lantern gutters out at once. Mist gathers between the trees, shaping a wavering trail that keeps pace with Alerie's footsteps.

Laryen
Who are you, then? A knight? A witch? Someone terribly interesting, I hope?

Laryen
And the mist said, beware the road, beware the... the... Oh, splendid. That was the important part.
The bard's lively grin falters. Ahead, the mist thickens across the path, and something unseen answers his unfinished melody with one low, distant note.

Laryen
You have to answer me before Veyrfen, traveler. Who are you? Please tell me you know the rest of this song.

“"At the end of the song the mist devours the traveler. Please leave me alone now." *She said adjusting the hood of her cloak and glancing at him to see if he'd leave. Upon realizing she'd unintentionally fed into his joyous, drunken singing she sighed and looked ahead again. He was clearly determined to be her friend despite her not wanting company.* "Are you lost? have you no one else to bother, Bard?"”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

Alerie adjusts her hood and glances toward Laryen. His bright singing has drawn her into the roadside performance despite herself; she sighs and faces the misty road again.

Alerie
Are you lost? Have you no one else to bother, Bard? Please leave me alone.

Laryen
Lost? Frequently. Unwanted? Almost never. Still, if solitude is your song, I suppose I can provide the final verse.
Laryen lifts his cap and gives an exaggerated bow. The mist folds over him at the end of his melody, swallowing his green coat, copper curls, and last wavering note.

Laryen
Beware the road, stern traveler. And if you find the rest of the song, save it for me!
The fog withdraws, leaving the path empty and silent. A sharp tug tears the clasp from Alerie's hood, and the small silver piece vanishes beneath the roots.

Alerie
The mist took him without a struggle.
“*Alerie tilted her head though, magic was at play here she could smell it, she slowly crept around the tree to see Laryen crouched and muffling his giggles with his hand.* "You think you are funny don't you, Bard?"”
FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

Alerie tilts her head, catching the sharp scent of active magic beneath the wet pine and mist. She lowers her steps and circles the tree, keeping its black trunk between herself and the path.
Her golden eyes find Laryen crouched beyond the roots, shoulders shaking as he muffles giggles behind one hand. The sight holds for only a breath before the image shivers like reflected moonlight.

Alerie
You think you are funny, don't you, Bard?
Alerie reaches the far side, but there is no crouching bard there. Only damp needles, a fading magical warmth, and her silver clasp caught in a root.

Laryen
Funny? I prefer mysteriously entertaining. Though I admit, the crouching was excellent.
His voice comes from beneath the roots, not from the path. The clasp gives a faint chime, and a narrow cleft opens beside it, descending into blue mist.

Laryen
You found the honest way in, stern traveler. Come down, if you dare. I promise only one song and several regrettable echoes.
“"Where are you, Illusion magic is usually much easier to see through." *She coaxed, drawing her assassins sword from its sheath and slowly climbing down the clefts wall.* *Her boots met damp ground and she began walking ahead.*”
FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -2)

Alerie
Where are you, Laryen? Illusion magic is usually much easier to see through.
Alerie draws her assassins sword, its dark blade catching no light. Keeping one hand against the cleft wall, she lowers herself carefully through the blue mist.
The stone flexes beneath her palm like cold clay. Her boot slips, and the wall folds inward, dropping her onto damp ground below instead of leaving a stable descent behind.

Alerie
The stone is part of the illusion, but the water is real.
She rises without sheathing her sword and walks ahead through ankle-deep water. Behind her, the cleft seals into a smooth black wall, erasing the route back.

Laryen
Ah, excellent. You found the dramatic entrance, though the exit appears to have misplaced itself.
His voice echoes from several directions at once. Ahead, three narrow passages open beneath root-veined stone, each carrying the same faint chime from Alerie's silver clasp.

“"I don't enjoy games bard, If you're going to attack me at least have the courage to do it head on, but I will inform you I have no money and nothing of value on my person." *She said calmly her hand shifting the sword slightly as she waded through the water now risen to hip height.*”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled +1)

Alerie
I do not enjoy games, bard. If you mean to attack me, have the courage to do it openly. I have no money, nor anything of value.
She wades onward as the water rises to her hips, one hand steadying the dark sword while blue reflections crawl across the root-veined walls.

Laryen
No money? Tragic. Nothing valuable? Ah, there I must disagree, stern traveler.
The three passages seal at once. Laryen steps from the central arch without illusion or flourish, his green coat dripping, copper curls plastered to his brow.

Laryen
Very well. Head on, as requested. But I should warn you, I am considerably less charming when cornered.
He raises both empty hands. The water around Alerie's boots surges toward him, gathering into a twisting column that stops just short of her blade.

Laryen
Last chance to call this a misunderstanding. I would hate to ruin our first honest meeting.

“*Alerie swung her blade through the water, cutting it down swiftly and moved towards Laryen, grabbing his collar harshly and tugging him towards her.* "You my darling, are slowing me down."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -1)

Alerie’s dark blade sweeps through the twisting column. The water splits cleanly, collapsing around her boots as she drives forward through the sudden hush.

Alerie
You, my darling, are slowing me down.
She seizes Laryen by the collar and yanks him close. Wet green cloth bunches beneath her fist, and his raised hands remain empty between them.

Laryen
Darling? That is a remarkably swift promotion from unwanted bard.
The severed water slaps across the stone and drains into cracks beneath the roots. The blue light dims, leaving Laryen’s face close and plainly visible.

Laryen
Very well, stern traveler. I am slowing you down. But if you pull any harder, I may become considerably less useful.
“"Show your real face Trickster. I'm not fond of puzzles." *She said narrowing her eyes slightly at him, her hand on her sword tightened, the leather wrapped handle creaked.*”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -2)

Alerie
Show me your real face, trickster. I am not fond of puzzles.
Alerie narrows her golden eyes and tightens her grip on the sword. The leather wrapping creaks beneath her fingers as she holds Laryen fast.

Laryen
Ah. No patience for masks, then. How very inconveniently perceptive of you.
The bard's copper curls darken to ash, his youthful features lengthening into the gaunt face of a middle-aged man. His green coat pales into a severe black mantle, and a thin silver scar crosses his left cheek.

Laryen
There. Laryen is a name I borrow. This face is mine, though I confess it has never earned applause.
The magic snaps outward as the disguise falls away. Alerie's clenched hand is scorched across the knuckles, and the silver clasp at her belt cracks with a sharp chime.

Laryen
You wanted truth, stern traveler. Now you have it, and every ward in this place knows exactly where we stand.
“"you're using your magic again, I can smell it. Don't play with me." *She said raising her blade to his throat.* "I normally don't care to rid myself of Tricksters, they're worth less time than ants. but you've gone and wasted more time of mine than I'd like. Drop the act."”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

Alerie
You're using your magic again. I can smell it. Don't play with me. Drop the act.
Alerie raises her dark blade until its edge rests beneath Laryen's jaw. The scorched knuckles of her gripping hand do not loosen, and the blue-lit chamber falls silent.

Laryen
There is no act left to drop. You stripped away the borrowed face, the borrowed voice, and nearly the borrowed name.
The remaining shimmer around Laryen gutters out. His gaunt middle-aged face stays fixed, silver scar stark against his cheek, while the roots above cease their restless pulsing.

Laryen
Very well. No more tricks, no more hidden hands, no more little performances. You have my unvarnished attention.

Laryen
She smells the spellwork. If I lie now, she will hear it in the silence before I finish.
The water settles around their boots. For the first time since the descent, every reflection shows the same man, and the narrow chamber offers nowhere for a second face to hide.
“"Let me out of this place, I've more important things to attend to." *She demanded not lowering her blade.*”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled +1)

Alerie
Let me out of this place. I have more important things to attend to.
Alerie keeps her blade beneath Laryen's jaw, refusing to lower it. Her demand hangs between them with the cold certainty of drawn steel.

Laryen
Of course. Important things outrank my hospitality, and I have never been praised for keeping guests.
Laryen slowly lifts one hand, careful not to touch the blade. Silver light unwinds from his fingers and threads through the root-veined ceiling.

Laryen
The honest way out is behind you. Do not mistake my obedience for surrender, stern traveler.
The black wall behind Alerie liquefies into a tall archway, revealing the misty forest path beyond. Dry air replaces the chamber's damp chill, and the blue light fades.

Laryen
She asked for an exit, not an explanation. Wise, perhaps. Dangerous, certainly.

“"The song you were berrating me with. What does it Foretell dear trickster?" *She asked turning to the exit.*”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Alerie
The song you were berating me with. What does it foretell, dear trickster?
Alerie turns toward the open archway, keeping her sword trained on Laryen until the last possible moment. Beyond it, the misty forest waits in absolute silence.

Laryen
It foretells Veyrfen's bell tolling for someone who still lives. The village will open its gates, and something beneath it will wake.
Laryen steps aside, granting her the clear passage. As Alerie crosses the threshold, the cracked silver clasp at her belt finally breaks, scattering its pieces into the water.

Laryen
The song also names a golden-eyed woman at the gate. It says she will bring the buried truth with her, whether Veyrfen welcomes it or not.
The archway seals behind Alerie with a soft stone sigh, leaving Laryen and his hidden chamber out of sight. The forest air is cold, clean, and free of illusion.

Laryen
Now she knows enough to become part of the song. That is worse than any blade beneath my jaw.
