Water bursts through cracks in the drainage tunnel, spreading around Oden’s boots and lifting scraps of cloth, rusted cans, and black refuse toward the dark current.

The stolen relic pulses coldly in his hand. Each answering flash throws warped shadows across faded municipal markings: EMERGENCY NETWORK, followed by a half-erased chamber number.

Ahead, a sealed maintenance door shudders under a heavy impact from the other side. Flaking paint rains into the floodwater, while old bolts strain in their sockets.

The tunnel behind him carries distant alarms from the holding yard, muffled by concrete and rushing water. No officer follows into the cramped passage yet.

Another blow dents the maintenance door inward. The relic answers with a brighter pulse, illuminating a narrow inspection panel and a corroded manual release beside it.

Water reaches Oden’s ankles and swirls faster around the sealed threshold. Something strikes again, close enough to make the entire emergency chamber groan.

Oden drops to one knee in the rising water and opens his thieves tools. The relic’s cold pulse glints across the narrow inspection panel and corroded lock.

His picks slip between rusted pins. Water pushes hard against his boots, while another impact shudders through the emergency chamber and rattles the manual release.

The final pin yields with a brittle click. Oden turns the release, and the maintenance door swings inward beneath a rush of trapped water.

He slips through the opening into a dry service chamber lined with dead control panels and emergency maps. The flood surges past him, carrying refuse into the room.

Behind him, the door slams against its frame and catches on the bent latch. The alarms fade beneath concrete, leaving only dripping water and the relic’s steady pulse.

Oden wipes grime from the dead control panels and traces their faded labels. Most switches are corroded, but one emergency map still shows a service route beneath the chamber.

The relic flashes against the panel. A cracked indicator lamp flickers red, then amber, feeding just enough current through the old circuitry to wake the map display.

Dusty lines illuminate beneath the glass: SERVICE ACCESS 4, then a junction marked SURFACE PUMP STATION. A manual door symbol blinks at the far end.

Oden follows the map to a waist-high cabinet and pulls its warped cover free. Behind it, a brass lever and a hand-painted arrow point into a narrow passage.

He throws the lever. Somewhere beyond the chamber, heavy locks disengage, and a ventilation grille rises from the floor to reveal dry steps leading upward.

The relic’s pulse steadies as the route opens. Far above, faint daylight leaks through the stairwell, while water continues spreading across the chamber behind him.

Oden wraps the relic in a strip torn from his damaged sleeve, then presses the bundle into the hollow beneath the cabinet’s rusted base.

He replaces the warped cover and scatters grime across its edge. The relic’s pulse disappears beneath metal, cloth, and the dead panel’s shadow.

Oden climbs the dry steps, keeping one hand on the corroded rail as daylight widens above. Water glimmers far below through the open grille.

The stairwell ends at a swollen hatch marked SURFACE PUMP STATION. Fresh scratches score the latch, and a thin line of daylight cuts beneath it.

Beyond the hatch, an old engine coughs once, then settles into a weak mechanical rhythm. Something has restored power to the station recently.

Oden reaches the hatch and lifts it onto a weed-choked concrete platform. Leftover Tokyo spreads beyond the pumps, while a red service lamp blinks beside an active radio.
