Valtún crouches at the newly exposed steps, mud drying across her claws. The cold passage yawns below, while Naramu keeps the cracked tablet close and Samira kneels beside the threshold.

Samira

Samira

The air has changed. Something passed below after the passage was sealed.

A small blue flame blooms above Samira’s palm, painting the dusty stone in trembling color. Fresh impressions cross the grit, broad enough for a large traveler, and descend beside old smears of lamp oil.

Naramu

Naramu

Those are not ancient marks. Ibram went down recently, carrying a lamp or tending one that failed.

Valtún Zalthiss

Valtún Zalthiss

The oil smell is faint, but it has not vanished.

Naramu steps to the first stair, testing its edge with one sandaled foot before lowering the tablet beneath his arm. Samira remains behind him, blue fire held high.

Samira

Samira

Stay within the flame’s reach, both of you. If the ruin remembers Ibram, it may remember how to keep him.

“I crawl forward and in front of Naramu. "I shall lead from the front. If need be, I will be the first defense." Then, I make my way down the steps, retaining my quadruped gait as part of my preparedness. As I advance, I keep mindful attention to the oil's scent, and what it may carry, or warn, with it.”

Valtún crawls before Naramu, her great claws finding purchase on each worn stair. She keeps her quadruped gait, while Samira’s blue flame follows just behind.

The oil scent strengthens below: stale lamp smoke, wet stone, and a sharper resinous note beneath it. Valtún separates the traces without losing her steady descent.

Naramu

Naramu

Your senses have found what my eyes missed. The oil turns beneath the next landing.

At the landing, Valtún detects a thin draft carrying fresh oil from a narrow cleft behind fallen masonry. The passage beyond is clear enough for her to enter first.

Samira

Samira

There is your advantage, Valtún. Ibram’s light went that way, and the ruin has given you the first path.

Naramu shifts aside. Valtún lowers her snout toward the cleft, confirms the resinous trail, and advances into the concealed passage with the scholars close behind.

The cleft opens into a low chamber where a guttering lamp burns beside a toppled stone basin. An elderly elf man crouches there, narrow-shouldered and gray-haired, his torn brown robe dark with damp; one hand presses a bloodied cloth to his side.

Ibram

Ibram

Do not extinguish that flame. The dark here is not empty, and it has already learned my name.

The old man’s eyes fix on Valtún’s towering silhouette, then shift to the blue fire behind her. His breathing is strained, but his gaze remains alert and plainly alive.

Naramu

Naramu

Ibram! By the old kings, we feared the foundations had taken you.

Ibram

Ibram

They nearly did. The gate below is awake, Naramu, and something wearing a man’s voice guards the descent.

Samira

Samira

Then you are fortunate we followed your trail. Can you stand, Ibram, or must we carry you from this chamber?

Ibram braces himself against the basin and rises, wavering but conscious. Beyond him, a second stair descends into darkness, while a slow, deliberate knock answers from below.

“I raise up steadily from my quadruped stance onto two legs, towering nearly to the ceiling. "Do as you must, humans. I have led you to where you wish and found your companion. Whatever awaits you below is something you may concern yourselves with later. I will investigate it myself while you carry the elder out of the passage."”

Valtún rises steadily from her quadruped stance, unfolding until her skull nearly brushes the ceiling. Dust sifts from the stones as her shadow swallows the chamber.

Samira

Samira

Then go carefully. We will bring Ibram back to the threshold and wait where the flame can reach us.

Naramu takes Ibram beneath one arm while Samira steadies his other side. Valtún turns toward the descending stair, leaving their blue fire behind as they retreat.

Alone below, Valtún follows the deliberate knocking and finds the stair ending at a circular gate of black stone. Fresh oil shines in its grooves, and a man’s voice murmurs beyond it.

Valtún Zalthiss

Valtún Zalthiss

The voice is close, but I cannot tell whether it comes from behind the gate or from the stone itself.

She has found the descent’s guarded gate, but the examination costs her the passage of time: Naramu and Samira’s blue light vanishes above before she can mark every turn of the stair.

Valtún approaches the black gate at a measured crawl. Fresh oil glistens beneath her claws, and the deliberate knocking beyond pauses as her shadow reaches the stone.

She places one immense hand against the gate and pushes gently. The ancient seal yields without a groan, turning inward beneath her controlled strength.

A breath of cold air spills through the opening, carrying lamp smoke, wet mineral, and the faint sweetness of resin. Beyond lies a round chamber lit by one low flame.

Othar

Othar

So the ruin sends another guardian. I am Othar, and I have waited beneath these stones for a living hand to open them.

The speaker remains hidden beyond a broken pillar. A tall silhouette moves behind the flame, while chains shift softly across the floor and the open gate settles against its stop.

Othar

Come inside, Valtún Zalthiss. The descent is open now, but the thing wearing Ibram’s voice has heard you enter.

State your purpose, Othar. Speak plainly of your intentions, and of this hidden chamber.

Valtún withdraws from the gate and advances toward the lone flame. She rises to her full height, filling the round chamber with her shadow and making the chains at Othar’s feet tremble.

Othar

Othar

My purpose is to keep the buried gate sealed until its hunger is answered. I opened it for you because only a living hand could break the old binding.

Othar steps from behind the broken pillar: a gaunt middle-aged man in dust-black robes, with iron rings around his wrists and a narrow scar crossing his bare scalp. He does not retreat.

Othar

Othar

This chamber is the lockhouse of the lower ruin. The flame marks the true passage, while the chains bind the voice that wears Ibram’s likeness.

Othar

Othar

I intend neither your death nor your confinement, Valtún Zalthiss. I intend to use your strength once, plainly and with your consent, to force that counterfeit voice into silence.

The low flame steadies instead of guttering. Behind the pillar, the chains draw taut, and from below the chamber comes a muffled imitation of Ibram’s voice, calling once for help.

“I study Othar for a beat and measure his claim's worth in the silence. Then the threat here is likely magical, not physical. That complicates things. "You speak as though you have become victim to the voice itself, and appear clearly chained. If you were merely a man, perhaps the anchor of what lies beyond, as you present yourself, you would know of the voice's true identity, would you not?"”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Valtún Zalthiss

Valtún Zalthiss

You speak as though the voice has victimized you, yet you are chained. If you are merely its anchor, you should know its true identity.

Valtún studies Othar’s wrists, scarred scalp, breathing, and the chain’s tension. His fear answers one question, but the dwindling flame steals the chamber’s finer details from her attention.

Othar

Othar

I know it. Its name is Nethrakh, the Buried Mouth. It borrowed Ibram’s voice because his memory was the freshest vessel it could reach.

The chains shiver as the name passes through the lockhouse. Beyond the pillar, the imitation answers in Ibram’s cadence, but the words arrive warped and wet.

Nethrakh

Nethrakh

Othar lies about the vessel. Ibram is not fresh. He is open. Ask the chained man what he fed me.

Othar

Othar

It fed on my years, not on Ibram. The thing twists every answer after hearing it. That is why I named it plainly before it could name me.

I arrived with a sorceress. I will send for her to come down here. If she cannot do as you wish, do not expect me to return.

A small smile blooms along Valtún’s snout, mocking the bargain. The low flame catches one grey eye as her shadow presses Othar back against the broken pillar.

Othar

Othar

Then send for Samira. I will not ask you to become the lock’s chain. If she cannot silence Nethrakh, you may leave this chamber without pursuit.

The iron rings at Othar’s wrists settle, and one length of chain slips loose across the floor. Behind the pillar, Nethrakh gives a wet, displeased murmur in Ibram’s stolen cadence.

Othar

Othar

Call her down, Valtún Zalthiss. The flame will hold while you are gone, and I will tell her exactly what I told you.

“I turn without any further words spoken and depart briefly to bring Samira to the chamber. Once I have retrieved her, I bring her to Othar.”

Valtún turns without another word and climbs the black stair at a swift crawl. Her shoulder scrapes the stone hard enough to shear loose scales, but she does not slow.

She reaches the upper chamber beneath the marsh island. Samira waits beside the extinguished threshold flame while Naramu supports Ibram, and all three look up as Valtún returns.

Valtún lowers her head toward Samira, then pivots back toward the passage. The bloodless scrape along her shoulder glistens beneath the mud.

Samira

Samira

You found the lockhouse, then. Lead me to it before the flame below fails.

Samira gathers her blue veils and follows immediately. Naramu keeps Ibram at the threshold, while Valtún descends ahead, one injured shoulder brushing the wall.

The round chamber receives them in blue firelight. Othar remains by the broken pillar, chains pooled at his feet, while the buried voice murmurs beneath the floor.

Othar

Do as you must, sorceress. I will not attend you.

Valtún turns and crawls toward the black gate, keeping her wounded shoulder clear of the wall. Her claws find the old grooves, and she settles beside the opening, ready to leave.

Her retreat is not as quiet as intended. One hind claw catches a loose chain, jerking it tight; the iron rings around Othar’s wrists snap against stone, and the gate begins to swing inward.

Othar

Othar

Hold there. If that gate closes, the lockhouse seals from this side. You may leave, but not by the passage you entered.

Samira plants her feet and thrusts one blue-lit hand toward the gate. The stone halts mid-swing, though the flame above her palm gutters and shrinks.

Samira

Samira

Stay where you are, Valtún. I can hold the gate, but only while I begin the binding. Othar, speak the names in order.

Valtún glances down at the taut chain, then toward Othar and Samira. She remains beside the gate, claws resting clear of its grooves as the blue light steadies.

Samira lowers her free hand and begins tracing slow signs through the air. Blue fire gathers along her fingers, casting thin bars of light across the black stone.

Othar

Othar

First, the keeper. Othar, who endured the binding and kept the true passage closed.

Othar bows his head as each word leaves him. The iron rings remain still, and the chain slackens across the floor without releasing his wrists.

Samira

Samira

Second, the hunger beneath us. Nethrakh, Buried Mouth, hear the boundary and remain within it.

The chamber answers with a deep vibration. Samira’s symbols descend in a ring around the flame, while the gate holds open beside Valtún.

Nethrakh

Nethrakh

I hear the boundary, sorceress. I do not accept it.

“"Extinguish your resistance, Nethrakh. Persist, and you exacerbate your own consequences. Your form, physical or magical, is not indefatigable, and will hear Samira." I rumble, still remaining still so as not to disturb the chains.”

Nethrakh

Nethrakh

Enough. I hear the boundary. I will not spend myself against that which has measured my limits.

The false cadence of Ibram’s voice collapses into a deep, bodiless murmur. The chains slacken fully, and the black stone stops trembling beneath Samira’s forming seal.

Samira

Samira

It has yielded. Hold still a moment longer, and the boundary will take its shape.

Othar

Your threat reached what my chains could not. Nethrakh has accepted the lockhouse’s authority.

Samira closes her hand. Blue fire threads through the symbols and sinks into the floor, leaving Nethrakh silent within the marked boundary while the gate remains open.
