Former partner in crime to Hagrtich Ssazar and his illegitimate half-sister. One of the three in total siblings who survived to adulthood from their original clutch. Betrayed and left for dead by Hagrtich in 454 CE after a brutal battle that cost Valtún her left eye, permanent scarring, brain damage, and burns to her scales. The fight culminated in Valtún falling from a multi-story observatory down a hill, and into a 400-hundred-foot-deep-gorge. Despite being on the brink of death, Valtún miraculously survived her half-brother's betrayal. He escaped with the treasure that severed what little bond they had, and left no way for Valtún to return to Verdanta. 12 years later, Valtún finds herself forever changed, lost, and rageful; she currently wanders through the transcontinental region spanning southwestern Asia and northeastern Africa as a rogue, wanted dead or alive. Her injuries that have caused her minor brain damage crippled her logical thinking and long-term memory. Her unbound rage has manifested in her becoming a man-eater. Regularly, she seeks out villages and towns, lays waste to a quarter of its inhabitants, and collects their bones, scalps, and flesh to keep herself clothed and adequately fed. These expeditions have been what have kept her name in the tongues of bounty hunters, pirates, and feared underground coalitions, earning her the title "Valtún the Mad".

GOAL & MOTIVE

Valtún intends to hunt Hagrtich across trade roads and ruined kingdoms, following rumors of the treasure he stole and the trail it left behind. Though her wounded mind frequently derails her from this goal, she wants to reclaim the treasure and kill Hagrtich to make her half-brother answer for abandoning her to die and taking the last piece of her old life.

WORLD & RULES

Set 600 years before the Fall of Pantheons, roughly 466 CE, before the prophesied end of the world. The gods are still active. The world is unrest with its powers, beasts, and politics. There is still much unknown yet to be uncovered about sorcery and the truest depths of magic. People live and breathe magic around them, yet have scarcely scratched the surface of uncovering its true potential.

CHARACTERS

The Code of Scales - Applicable to all of Quetzal ancestry 1. None born of the earth and scale shall dawn garments not made of leather, bone, or flesh. All else is impure, and disgraces the ancestral heritage, given already perfect skin. 2. None born of the earth and scale shall arm themselves with a weapon in hand, rather it be iron or magic. To do so disgraces the ancestral heritage, given already capable limbs, powerful jaws, and size. 3. To eat one of their own scale or blood is not sin. 4. All born of earth and scale will pledge loyalty to the ancestors who came before them and honor their ambitions. The Dragonborn Little is known of the dragons' true origins. It is suspected they evolved naturally to possess wings, and through evolving alongside magic, developed the ability to breathe fire. Their diversity makes leaving one conclusion difficult to fall upon. The origin therefore, of the Dragonborn is all the more cloudy. Verdanta is regarded by some as the Birthplace of the Beastfolk. Some five-hundred to seven-hundred thousand years ago, it is suspected that some of the Lizard-people migrated out of Africa and into Europe, where the Dragonborn would later give rise through breeding between dragon and Lizard-folk. The resulting offspring came to be known as Dragonborn, and are largely biological. Over the course of time, Lizard-people are suspected to have gone extinct within the region and replaced instead by their descendants, the Dragonborn. The Dragonborn, diverse and numerous, spread across the entirety of Eurasia, and later into the New World. They possess four limbs, tails, scales, and usually, though not all the time, wings. Wings in particular seemed a difficult trait to transfer, as part of their existence is largely magical, which fused often poorly with Lizard-people, who despite being technically products of magic themselves, are among one of the least magic-bearing races in the world. The mutation is exceedingly rare to the point that fewer than two dozen Lizard-people in all of currently recorded history possess any natural-born affinity to the element. Consequently, Dragonborn were technically born with wings, but rarely were they functional anatomical structures. And as generations passed, the trait was not inherited by means of natural selection. Pure-blood Lizard-folk from Verdanta often withheld stigma toward the Dragonborn for their mere existence because of their impure origins. They were seen as lesser than dragons, which already the Lizard-people had conflicting opinions on. Some saw them almost as deities, while others clapped their snouts and dismissed them as ordinary animals. Dragonborn largely inherited the physical prowess their Lizard-folk ancestors possessed, and a portion of their dragon side's sheer scale, but could not fly. At best, using their stunted wings, if they were blessed to have them, they could glide short distances. They were good swimmers, climbers, and hunters. Breathing fire, much like the situation with wings, was quite rare. Manifesting flame was not always accomplishable, aside from, if even, a short exhale of embers. Rather, most Dragonborn developed complex organs suited for the development of extreme heat combined with their Lizard-folk ancestry's toxic stomach acid. The result was often potent, even worse than a regular Lizard-person would be capable of, and in itself, somewhat capable of setting something on fire. The Lesser Dragonborn Dragonborn were able to technically breed with humans through complicated magical processes, which, although few, has produced what Lizard-folk call "Brittlescales". Brittlescales do not have wings at all unless their human parent, who is always magic-bearing, had direct influence over their development to do so. However, this interference is still limited to what is biologically possible, and as such leaves breathing fire more or less out of the question. Brittlescales earned their name for their minimal, often splotched patches of scales along smooth, human skin. They have barely any of the additional physical strength from their Dragonborn parent, and aside from the aforementioned troubles with fire-breathing and flight, are not heavily separated from their human counterparts. They do sometimes possess tails, though it is not guaranteed, and when they do, they are small, poorly functional, and ugly. Brittlescales barely have claws. They are more so nails that are naturally sharp at the edges, made from keratin and not bone. Brittlescales, for all their other faults however, are exceptionally imbued with magic, and are among some of the most naturally prestigious in the world. Much like Dragonborn, Lizard-people's resentment to Brittlescales are deep-rooted in their cultural and ancestral values. Brittlescales are seen as pathetic, and are sometimes owned as slaves by the few Lizard-folk who live outside of Africa.

HISTORY & EVENTS

430 CE: Valtún was originally a part of a small group of thieves consisting exclusively of her younger brothers Hagritch and Zul'Kesh. The three of them were united under their shared purpose of survival in Verdanta since they were hatchlings. Together, they worked as one well-oiled machine, starting first with petty theft, then later into full-scale tomb raids. Valtún was the muscle. Her innate strength often paved the way where her brothers couldn't. Lizard-people are not particularly emotional or familial, but she was a rare exception. What most she loved about her brothers were their cleverness and competitive nature. Though always she surpassed them physically, they found other ways to wrestle with each other. Their minds worked very similarly, which worked always in their favor. 454 CE: Valtún, Zul'Kesh, and Hagrtich took on their more ambitious quest yet. They sought the treasures of a human sorcerer who had buried his collection of mystic artifacts atop an observatory, guarded by eternal soldiers. Before setting off, the trio was already on thin ice. By now well into their adulthood, as it often comes with the nature of lizard-people, working together became less of a coordinated effort, and more of a juggle for whoever could reach their goal first. Zul'Kesh outgrew his competitive nature, and was already setting out more and more on his own, only returning to the trio when he thought they were necessary. Valtún wanted them all to stay together, but she knew this was inevitable. Hagrtich was a different case. Unlike his siblings, he hadn't grown into this behavior. It had been brewing for years prior, and was only now beginning to show its cracks. Like Zul'Kesh, Hagrtich distanced himself when he saw the opportunity. He made deals that crossed the lines of his siblings' ethical boundaries, took on missions designed to orchestrate his success before either of them even made a move, and killed their own kind for positions within a guild he's still aligned with to this day. All while feigning his own innocence. But this expedition was different. For the past twenty-two years, Hagrtich had been planning everything to lead to this moment. The moment he could seize the haul all for himself. He never actually liked his siblings. They were just obstacles in his way, making life more difficult than it had to be by just existing. And so when Zul'Kesh's pride led him into a trap he couldn't escape, Hagrtich didn't turn back for him. When The observatory began to collapse under the sorcerer's protective seal, it was already too late when Valtún realized the scheme. She didn't want to fight him. To her, he was more valuable than the treasure. But he didn't see it that way. She knew he would escape if he survived though, and his betrayal of their brother couldn't go without justice. Hagrtich fought back for the first time, and Valtún was caught off guard. He was stronger than he looked. Resourceful, always. But in this moment? He wasn't her half-brother. He wasn't even someone she knew. Valtún tried to restrain herself from killing him, but he forced her hand intentionally into yet another trap. He vomited on her arms when she grabbed him, the stomach acid burning through her scales and leaving her scarred for life; he took advantage of the pause, clawed out one of her eyes, and used her own momentum against her. In less than a minute the tables completely flipped. The observatory collapsed down the hillside, taking with it the debris and its eternal soldiers. Hagrtich escaped with the treasure. Valtún fell down the gorge below, left for dead. 466 CE: Valtún is a ruined woman, barely recognizable from what she once was. Her path of revenge is thwarted by her own mental instability and active pursuers, cruelly cursing her to be forever on the run. What love she once had for her half-brother died twelve years ago. What loyalty she had for Verdanta is buried beneath cynicism for... everything. She feels she cannot trust anyone, so keeps herself guarded behind her bulk and teeth. She hates the gods for casting her into this life. She hates that she survived. She hates what humans are doing to the world, striping it of its land to make way for their own, unaware that her own birthplace does the same thing.
