The Wandering Swordsman

Moonlight strips the trees silver as Jameson the tyranical and the wandering swordsman burst from the pavilion grounds. Behind them, the wedding drums fade into the woods, then return as a darker pulse.

The wandering swordsman skids to a halt beneath a beech tree, bent double, clutching a creased map in one hand. His eyes flick from the page to the trees, where movement stirs between the trunks.

Tarin

Tarin

There, see it? A goat trail. If that mark is true, it leads to the tribe's hill camp.

Tarin

Tarin

He is not done. None of them are. Not after what he did back there.

A horn answers from deeper in the dark. Then another. The search line is reforming, faster than expected.

Tarin

Tarin

If you mean to strike their leadership, this is your path. I can show you the way, if you keep them off us.

Between the trees, torchlight glints on spearpoints, and the hunt turns from panic into pursuit.

Jameson steps between the trees and the swordsman, planting himself where the torchlight would have to meet his blade first. The pursuing horns stay distant, but the line of searchers keeps moving.

The swordsman lowers the map with a shaky breath, then looks up at Jameson instead of the dark. "You really mean to hold them back?"

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson says he does. He asks for the swordsman's name, and says he means to break the tribe that tore his family apart.

Tarin

Tarin

"Tarin. And I did not ask for your grief, but I hear it." He folds the map once, then shoves it into Jameson's hand. "The hill camp is north of the ravine, under the cairn ridge. Their scouts use a goat path to reach it."

Tarin

Tarin

He looks Jameson over, then the blood on the ground. "If he keeps standing between me and them, I live through this."

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson tells Tarin he will keep him alive, and that he will carve a path through every one of them.

Tarin gives a short, grim nod, then presses closer to Jameson’s side as a loose stone clicks somewhere ahead. The map crackles in Jameson’s grip, and the first torch flares brighter between the trunks.

Jameson takes the goat path at speed, boots biting damp earth. A scout slips from the brush ahead, but his reach is too slow, and Jameson drops him before the alarm can rise.

The trail tightens under black branches. One by one, the scouts fall where they hide, and Jameson leaves their heads displayed along the roots and stones as a grim warning.

Then a shape moves behind him, too quiet for the other scouts. Jameson turns inside the ambush and catches the man by the throat before the blade can come free.

Scout

Scout

He is too fast.

Jameson binds the scout fast with torn cord and fallen vines. The prisoner’s eyes dart toward the dark ahead, then back to Jameson’s sword.

Scout

Scout

Mercy. The ridge path, the watch points, I know them.

Through the trees, more torchlight glows toward the hill camp. The captive swallows hard and starts talking, offering the camp’s layout before Jameson even has to press him.

Will you switch sides and join me in this venture

Jameson the tyranical

Will you switch sides and join me in this venture?

Scout

Scout

His throat works against the cord. He glances toward the torchline, then back to Jameson. Yes. I know the ridge watch and the cut through the pines. Let me guide you, and I live.

The scout’s fear shifts into hurried usefulness. He nods toward the dark ahead, where the hill camp’s torchlight stains the trunks amber, and starts naming paths only a local would know.

Scout

Scout

There is a hook trail under the south stones, and a blind from the cedar shelf. The matron kept the ring sealed there when she expected trouble.

Jameson cuts the last knot free enough for the man to breathe, but not enough to forget the blade at his back. The prisoner leans forward, eager to prove his bargain with every detail.

Scout

Scout

If I help him, I may yet walk away from this night.

Ahead, the torchlit camp flickers through the branches, no longer a rumor but a place with a route, a gate, and someone inside who knows Jameson is coming.

Agreed let's go...... now if you betray you will wish you were dead

Jameson the tyranical

Agreed. You guide me now. Betray me, and you will wish you were dead.

The scout flinches at the flat certainty in Jameson’s voice, then nods hard enough to jolt the rope at his wrists.

Scout

Scout

I understand. Keep me alive, and I take you by the least watched way.

Jameson loosens the cord just enough to make movement possible, and the scout rises in a wary crouch, eyes never leaving the blade.

Scout

Scout

He means it. One lie, and I die on this path.

Ahead, the torchline brightens between the trunks, and the scout points Jameson toward the darker fold under the pines where the ridge path begins.

I free him of his bindings give him some food as I eat. What is your tribes goal

Jameson cuts the scout’s bindings free at the wrists, then tosses him a strip of travel food. The scout catches it with both hands, startled by the mercy of it.

Jameson the tyranical

Eat. Tell me what the tribe wants.

Scout

Scout

He gives food first, not tricks. That is worse for me, somehow.

Scout

Scout

The camp waits on the hill for the war signal. They want the woods cleared, the roads watched, and every stranger broken before dawn.

The scout takes a bite, chewing fast, then swallows and keeps talking because Jameson is still looking at him with the sword in hand.

Scout

Scout

If the matron’s ring had closed, you’d be dead already. They meant to trap you at the pavilion, then drag your head uphill as proof.

He lowers his gaze to the food, shoulders easing by a fraction as the torchlight ahead burns steady through the trees.

Hmmmmmmmmm thats is funny. Eat it now taste it later let's go

Hmm. Funny. Eat it now, taste it later, let's go.

Scout

Scout

Aye. I am going.

The scout stuffs the last of the ration into his mouth, rises fast, and wipes his hands on his tunic instead of arguing. He turns toward the torchline and starts walking with his shoulders tight.

Jameson follows, and the forest path narrows into black trunks and resin smell. The steady glow ahead shows the camp road is closer now, but it also throws moving shadows across the trail.

Scout

Scout

Keep low. If they see us before the camp gate, they will sound the ring again.

He points once, briefly, at the slope ahead where torchlight threads between roots and stones. His freed wrists still tremble, though he keeps moving.

Jameson’s boot catches a snapped branch, and the dry crack carries farther than he wants. The scout flinches, then keeps leading, faster now, toward the hill.

I keep following the scout up hill

Jameson keeps pace behind the scout as the path tips steeper, boots finding roots before they can slip. The torchline ahead stops being a glow and starts becoming individual flames between the trunks.

Scout

Scout

The camp road bends by the stone teeth. From there, the gate sits above us, on the ridge.

He angles uphill without looking back, and the trees thin just enough to show packed earth, cut brush, and a rough track climbing toward the hill.

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson the tyranical

The ridge is in sight.

Jameson closes the distance in silence, the scout’s guidance carrying them onto the harder ground. The forest opens into the camp approach, where trampled mud and torch stumps mark the tribe’s hand on the land.

Scout

Scout

Do not step into the open yet. If the watchers are at the bend, they will see us from the slope.

Above them, the first rough palisade shapes appear through the firelight, and somewhere beyond it a horn waits behind closed breath.

What tha fuck was that

Jameson halts on the muddy rise and turns his head toward the sound, sword still low. A sharp crack answers from the slope above, not a horn, but a signal split into the trees.

Scout

Scout

That is not ours. Someone is warning the camp.

The scout freezes beside him, eyes fixed on the palisade lights. Beyond the first torchline, shadowed figures shift at the ridge gate as if the camp has suddenly woken.

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson the tyranical

What the fuck was that?

The answer comes in another burst of motion, a pale shape breaking from the brush near the road and ducking hard behind a stump. The hidden watcher has seen them.

Scout

Scout

If he runs uphill, the whole ridge will know we are here.

Torchlight wavers over the first palisade stakes, and the trampled path now feels like a pointed finger aimed straight at the camp gate.

I sit and and bide my time i know it is coming soon. Hey man which tent is leadership

Jameson drops into a crouch behind the roots and mud, letting the ridge noise pass over him. The scout stays close, breathing shallowly, while the torchline above keeps flickering like a wound in the trees.

Jameson the tyranical

Jameson the tyranical

Which tent is leadership?

Scout

Scout

The tallest hide tent near the gate, the one with the split pole. If the watcher reports in, that is where they go.

Jameson has the answer now, and the scout points uphill without being asked twice. The ridge gate shifts in the firelight, and a pair of sentries turn their heads toward the brush where the pale watcher fled.

Scout

Scout

If he moves now, he can cut straight for it.

Below the palisade, the path stays open for only a breath longer, trampled straight toward the tents. Above it, a torch jerks to life, marking the camp’s wakefulness.

Jameson and the scout both see the same thing, the leadership tent standing beyond the gate like a dark target with fire behind it.

I run like the wind quieter than a mouse right in the tent opening killing all whom I see splitting heads luke watermelons take all yhe treasures I see and of course my scout is with me through this watching so no one comes. I place their heads on yhe tables and in chairs. I take maps and manifestation boards I dress in the elders clothing. Hey scout what if we dress like them and kill them as they come in to report

Jameson springs from the roots and moves low through the brush, the scout shadowing him one step behind. The gate ahead is half-lit, and the split-pole tent swallows the torch glow as he slips into its mouth.

Inside, the first sentry falls before a shout can rise. Jameson is already on the next man, and the little tent turns frantic with overturned stools, a map board toppling, and heavy bodies striking the hide floor.

When the silence snaps back, Jameson strips the elders' clothing from the dead and drapes it over himself. He sweeps the map boards and tokens into reach, while the scout stands tight to the flap, watching the path for anyone coming.

Scout

Scout

If they send a runner, we can meet him in their own skins.

Jameson sets the fallen heads where they will be seen first, on the tables and in the chairs, a brutal greeting for the next report.

Then he takes the charts and marker boards, the camp notes and signal marks, everything that names the hill. Outside, boots crunch on the ridge path, and a voice calls for the elder by title.
