The alley buckles under Reverie’s feet, and she drops through black rainwater into a cellar below the shop. Cold air closes over her, wet stone and rot thick in the throat.
Her lantern swings wide, catching mold-slick walls and a floor littered with broken crates, old ash, and a narrow drain choked with hair-thin roots. Somewhere above, the sinkhole grinds and settles.

The Scholar
Reverie, this way, before it finds the opening.

The Scholar
The cellar is older than the shop. Much older.
The Scholar lands beside her in a stumble, one hand braced on the wall. Across the collapsing edge, the Hooded Figure halts in the alley glare, their outline wavering as dust and debris pour between them and the cellar.

The Hooded Figure
You cannot hide it below ground. The name still hears you.
The diary’s name-chain pulses in Reverie’s hands, bright as a vein under skin, and the black seam along its binding seems to twitch in the lantern light.

“Can I find a way to seal this cellar from the inside?”
YES, BUT (Even, rolled 49)
Reverie scans the cellar walls for a latch or mechanism to seal the breach, but the stone is solid and ancient. The only way to close the gap is to pile the heavy, rotted crates against the sinkhole, yet the effort would leave her exposed to the entity above.
“I pile the crates over the sinkhole”
SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled +0)

Reverie hauls the first crate into place, the wood giving up with a wet groan. Dust spills in a gray sheet as she shoves again, turning the stack into a rough barricade beneath the jagged hole.
The Scholar rushes in to help, bracing his shoulder against a cracked sideboard. Together they drag another crate up, and the gap narrows to a crooked mouth of stone and splinters.

The Scholar
There, keep pressing. If that thing drops through now, it lands on wood first.
The diary gives a cold twitch in Reverie’s grip, a thread of frost-like mist leaking from its spine. The raw black seam along the binding pulses once, then stills behind the new wall of crates.

The Scholar
For the moment... it will have to come through the pile.
Above them, a shape shifts at the broken edge, unseen except for the scrape of something testing the gap. The cellar holds, but only barely, and the silence feels temporary.
