Rain needles the alley as The Scholar crouches low, shaking salt from his palm. The diary in Reverie’s hands gives a dull, living throb, and the frost on its cover blooms brighter around the hidden name-chain.

White grains hiss against wet stone as he drags a wavering circle around her boots. At the alley mouth, the shadow lengthens, too thin to be human, too patient to be mist.

Keep it in the light. If the chain blanks out, it will finish the name.

The symbols are shifting with the pulse.

The diary jolts warm again, as if something inside recognizes the salt line. One glowing thread near the spine loosens, exposing a seam in the binding, raw and black beneath the frost.

From the darkness, a shape leans closer, and the rain around it seems to fall sideways. The Scholar steadies the last arc of salt with a grim breath, leaving the book ringed but not yet safe.

Unbind the diary

Can the salt circle hold against the entity if I focus on the binding?

NO (Even, rolled 75)

The salt grains begin to vibrate, dancing in place as the shadow at the alley mouth surges forward. The circle does not hold, and the white line fractures into dust as the entity crosses the threshold.

Hold my lantern high to blind the approaching shadow.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Reverie lifts the lantern overhead, and its beam catches the hooded figure full in the face. The shadow recoils at once, its edges thinning like smoke caught in a draft.

Keep it there. It hates the light.

The diary shivers in Reverie’s other hand, frost-sweat crawling over the cover as the pulsing name-chain flares bright, then steadies under the glare.

The beam holds. The seam is still exposed.

The scholar reaches toward the black seam, eyes wide, while the hooded figure presses forward anyway, one hand rising against the light.

Rain hisses on the lantern hood. The alley tightens around the three of them, and the hooded figure’s voice hardens to a command.

Put it down, Reverie, or I come through you for it.
