Incense hangs in the bookshop like dirty lace. Shelves lean inward, crowded with cracked spines and sealed folios, while somewhere in the back a bell keeps trembling without a hand to ring it.

At the rear aisle, a pale scholar is jammed against the shelf, one shoulder trapped between wood and wood. He claws at a leather-bound diary as it bucks in his hands, its pages snapping open by themselves.

Black ink crawls across the paper in fresh lines, wet and deliberate, as if something unseen is finishing a sentence it has waited years to write.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Help me, please. It must not reach the last entry.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Destroy it. Burn it, tear it, anything. Just do it now.

Reverie stands in the aisle with her journal in hand, the smell of rot and ash pressing at her throat, while the diary convulses hard enough to rattle the shelf behind the scholar.

A fresh line of ink forms on the open page. The scholar flinches and shoves the book toward Reverie, his eyes wide with the certainty that something has almost answered.

✓ Quest Accepted

Silence the leather-bound diary

Can I force the diary shut before the final sentence is written?

YES, AND MORE (Even, rolled 2)

Reverie lunges forward, her hands clamping over the leather covers with enough force to snap the spine of the book shut. The ink stops mid-stroke, the diary lets out a final, wet gasp of air, and the violent tremors cease instantly.

The Scholar

The Scholar

It is done. You have severed the connection, and the ink... it is fading.

Is the diary still cursed?

YES (Likely, rolled 37)

Reverie

The ink is not just fading, it is sinking into the leather, and the temperature of the book is still unnaturally cold.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Do not be fooled by the silence, Reverie. The curse has merely retreated into the binding, waiting for a pulse to wake it again.

I ask the scholar how to break the binding

SUCCESS (Good Occult Lore, rolled +4)

Reverie lowers the magnifying glass and names the shape of the binding. The Scholar’s breathing catches, then steadies as he forces himself to listen instead of tremble.

Reverie

Reverie

How is it broken?

The Scholar

The Scholar

Not smashed, not burned. Unstitched. The first owner hid a true name in the lining. Find that seam, and the diary loses its teeth.

He swallows hard, then adds that the final entry is already visible in the fibers, a script waiting to be read if the cover is opened under salt light.

The Scholar

The Scholar

There is a key, too, sewn into the endpaper. I thought it only locked the clasp.

For the first time, his shoulders drop. The book stays shut, but the crack in the shelf widens with a soft pop, and a thin paper edge peeks from the binding.

Unstitch the diary’s hidden true name
