Shulkar reaches the forest border with trade goods secured beneath canvas and his ledger tucked close. Tall trees crowd the road ahead, their shade beginning just beyond a rough wooden barrier.

Two elven guards stand before the gate. One is a middle-aged elf man, lean and weathered, wearing a dark green cloak over a leather jerkin; the other is a young adult elf woman with braided black hair, a red sash, and a watchful scar beneath one eye.

Halt there. No wagon, pack train, or merchant crosses into the forest without leave.

The man’s hand rests near his sword hilt, though he does not draw. His companion studies the bundles, then Shulkar’s hands, as if expecting a concealed bargain or sudden movement.

State your name, your business, and whom you expect to receive you. Speak plainly, trader.

Behind them, the barred path disappears between ash and beech trunks. No welcoming party appears, but the guards’ attention leaves room for an answer rather than closing the road entirely.

“"My name is Shulkar Dathos. I have my inventory I wish to trade. Basic pots and pans, and kitchen supplies. Few good rugs. And few seaside herbs you might find rarer for this region. Should find my paperwork in order." You hand the basic lists to them.”

Shulkar

My name is Shulkar Dathos. I have goods to trade: basic pots and pans, kitchen supplies, a few good rugs, and seaside herbs rarer in this region. My paperwork should be in order.

Shulkar draws out the basic inventory lists and offers them across the barrier. The pages bear clear entries for the cookware, woven rugs, and sealed bundles of herbs beneath the canvas.

Hold steady. I will read these first.

The young adult elf guard accepts the lists and scans each line beneath the forest shade. Her scar tightens as she checks the seals, quantities, and written declarations.

The inventory is orderly, and the travel papers carry the river customs mark. You have done better preparation than most traders who reach this gate.

Your goods may enter for inspection at the market station. Keep the herbs sealed, and report to the clerk beside the east storehouse.

The older guard lifts the bar. The gate opens onto the shaded road, and the clerk’s location gives Shulkar a direct place to present his wares without searching the settlement.
