The wall bursts inward in a spray of splinters and dust. Twisted limbs scrape through the opening, drawn by the ring's hungry pulse in Vallus's hand.

Vallus Stormseeker plants his boots in the rubble, sword ready, the cracked ring vibrating like a trapped heartbeat. Every monster in the breach turns toward him.

By the roots, it wants you now. Give it away, Vallus!

The Keeper stays crouched behind the table, white-knuckled and shaking, while the nearest creature tests the shattered frame with hooked fingers.

The ring is the lure. If it stays in his hand, they keep coming.

The dark throb in the ring answers the beasts outside, tying their charge directly to Vallus and making him the center of the attack.

Vallus lifts the cracked ring and draws a sharp breath. Blue-white wards bloom around him in a thin, spinning shell as he steps into the broken air.

The nearest claws rake the barrier and slide off in sparks, buying him a heartbeat. He turns with the spell's rhythm, sword flashing in a tight arc.

One beast jerks back with a torn shoulder, then another crowds in, only to meet the edge of his blade and the stubborn glow around his body.

Harlen

Yes, like that, keep them off the breach!

The Keeper ducks lower behind the table, eyes fixed on the ring's hairline fracture as if it might split again at any second.

The barrier holds.

Outside the broken wall, the creatures hesitate at the glittering ward, then press together for another surge, forcing the next decision.

“Focus my magic more on the ring, trying to widen the fracture, or break it entirely”

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +3)

Vallus narrows his grip on the ring and feeds a colder thread of power into the fracture.

The crack jumps, spidering bright across the band, and the ward shell around him flares once before thinning to dust.

Outside the breach, the nearest shapes recoil hard, their pressure on the wall breaking as if something unseen has snapped.

A pulse rolls through the tavern floorboards, then the ring gives with a clean, glassy shiver and goes dark in Vallus's hand.

It is breaking... and they are losing the trail.

One creature still claws at the air from outside, but it no longer finds purchase, and a faint blue ember inside the ring's crack flickers toward the far treeline.

The light is not fading, it is pulling toward the deep woods.

Harlen

Harlen

My name is Harlen, and that light... it is leading them back to the source of the curse.

“Can Harlen tell me what he knows about the origin of this curse?”

YES (Likely, rolled 30)

I found that ring in the ruins of the old shrine, deep in the thicket where the trees grow twisted and black. The elders always whispered that the shrine was built to seal away a hunger that predates the forest itself, and I fear the ring was the only thing keeping that ancient malice dormant.

Vallus Stormseeker

The ring was not a treasure, but a lock.

“Is the old shrine still standing?”

YES (Likely, rolled 17)

The ember pulses with a steady, rhythmic light, pulling my gaze toward the distant, jagged silhouette of stone rising above the canopy.

Beyond the treeline, the faint blue glow illuminates the skeletal remains of a stone structure, its central archway still standing defiant against the encroaching rot of the forest.

Vallus Stormseeker leaves Elven forest tavern behind and arrives at the shrine.

“I tell Harlen to stay in the tavern as I gather my gear and head toslwards the shrine, hoping to find a way to reseal the lock”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The shrine looms out of the trees, its broken arch slick with moss and old rain. Vallus reaches the stone steps, gear settled, the cracked ring cool and faintly bright in his hand.

Harlen

Harlen

I stay put. If anything follows you, it has to pass me first.

Harlen hovers in the doorway behind him, then grips the frame and stops himself from following. Vallus turns from the tavern path and moves up the shrine steps.

Inside, cold air and old incense mingle with damp stone. The faint blue ember in the ring sharpens, tugging toward the dark center beneath the arch.

The glow is stronger here. It is pointing below the shrine.

At the base of a cracked altar, Vallus finds a seam of stone worked with the same hairline fracture motif as the ring, and the dust around it is disturbed.

A hidden passage waits in the shadow of the altar, its edge just wide enough for a blade and a willing hand. Something stale breathes up from within.

“Call upon my magical gifts to open the hidden passage, keeping my sword ready to stab at anything threatening”

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +0)

Vallus plants his sword point-down beside the altar and lays his free hand over the cracked seam. Blue light threads through his fingers, and the stone answers with a low, grinding click.

The hidden slab shifts inward. Dust spills from the gap as the passage loosens under his spell, the altar’s fracture line glowing like a wound reopened to the light.

Vallus keeps his blade angled toward the opening while the stone gives way. Cold air breathes out from below, carrying the smell of wet earth and something older.

Harlen straightens at the doorway, eyes fixed on the dark gap. Relief flickers across him, but he stays back, letting Vallus take the first step.

The passage is open.

Below, the blue ember in the ring steadies and points downward, as if the shrine itself has finally remembered what it was built to hide.

Is it safe to go down there, or does that light mean something is waking up?

Only one way to find out.

Vallus answers Harlen, then draws a slow breath and lets his sight slip beyond the torchlit stone. The passage below sharpens in his mind, edges brightening against the dark as he starts down with his sword ready.

The stair takes his weight in a hush of old dust. Blue glimmers cling to the fractured ring at his side, and the shaft opens beneath him like a throat of black stone.

Above, Harlen stays at the threshold, watching Vallus descend while the shrine’s cold air exhales around them.

If that light stirs, I call for you. If it fades, I am not following blindly.

Vallus reaches the first landing and the hidden passage bends deeper, its path now clear to his heightened eyes.
