Adventure of Vallus Stormseeker 1

Warm lamplight pools across the tavern floor, but the air feels wrong, tight with static and old sap. Vallus Stormseeker steps inside and sees the keeper at the room’s center, ring raised, arcane sigils turning in a slow circle around him.

Beyond the shuttered windows, shapes press at the dark tree line, too many limbs, too sharp to be wolves. They twitch like fever dreams made flesh, each one answering the ring’s pulse.

His cold smile does not reach his eyes. The ring in his hand throbs, and the sigils flare brighter in reply, casting black-edged shadows over barrels, benches, and the stained boards.

One of the window shadows surges forward, claws skittering against the glass, and the room shudders with the promise of a breach.

The ring pulses with a rhythmic, suffocating weight that defies any attempt to break it. It is bound to the keeper's very life force, and any strike against the metal would surely extinguish him.

The blade stops inches from the keeper's wrist, held back by an invisible, impenetrable barrier of force. The ring's violet light flares, absorbing the momentum of the strike without a tremor.

Vallus snaps the warning across the tavern, and the keeper hears it. The words land hard enough to change his stance, even through the violet glare.

The keeper drags back from the ring at last, and the arcane sigils around him loosen their grip. The barrier still shivers in the air, but the light in the room gives Vallus a clear lane toward the shattered threshold.

A cold draft rolls in from outside, carrying the scrape of claws on roots. The tavern windows dim as the forest presses closer, waiting for Vallus's next move.

Vallus lifts his focus to the ring, and old latticework of power resolves in his mind, thin as spider silk under moonlight. The binding is not meant to be smashed clean, only to be loosened first.

He shapes the spell and sends it into the violet glare. The glow gutters for a breath, and a hairline fracture of pale light appears in the ring's sheen.

The keeper jerks at the reaction, his grip whitening as the barrier ripples harder across the room.

The magic answers with a sharp, stinging backlash that snaps through Vallus's arm, and the smell of scorched air cuts through the tavern.

The fracture holds, but the ring is not yet broken, and the keeper's next move hangs in the air with the trembling barrier.

Vallus rushes in close and floods the keeper’s sight with a sharp flare of spelllight. The man flinches, and his grip slips just enough for Vallus to seize the ring.

His fingers wrench at the band, and the pale fracture runs clean through its sheen. The barrier shudders, then buckles around the keeper’s hand.

With a dry snap, the ring comes free. A sting of backlash crawls up Vallus’s arm, and the tavern’s air tastes suddenly cold.

The keeper staggers without the ring’s firm hold, one shoulder dropped under the aftershock. The violet haze around him thins, but the spell he carried is still live and twitching.

Outside, something heavy scrapes against the tavern wall, and the keeper turns toward the sound with fresh panic.
