The Broken Tankard shudders as the door slams wide. Cold air spills over the hearth, and the blue sigil on the parchment flares like a warning eye.

A heavily armored mercenary stands in the threshold, broad as an oak post, helm tucked under one arm. His stare locks on the wax token in Fae Talh's hand.

At the same instant, the Stranger breaks apart into black soot and is gone, leaving only a faint smear of ash where they stood.

That token is mine. Hand it over, and I leave this room in one piece.

A barmaid near the counter freezes mid-reach, then slowly lowers a tankard, eyes wide as she watches the armed man and the glowing parchment.

He came for the token, not the room.

You there, tiefling, do not make this harder than it must be. The cup's notices draw thieves and fools alike.

Secure the wax token

I give a confident smirk "well I guess you can have it." I use a spell to create hundreds of illusionary tokens and make it seem like I'm tossing them scattering them every where with my skilled hands I slip the real token into my pocket keeping it safe on my person.

Well, I guess you can have it.

Fae Talh's smile sharpens as her fingers flick. A hundred wax tokens seem to burst from her palm in a glittering spill, clattering across the floorboards and skittering beneath tables.

In the same motion, her real token vanishes into her pocket with a sleight so clean it barely stirs her sleeve.

What trickery is this?

He lunges one step forward, then stalls, staring at the false tokens flashing in the firelight as they bounce and spin everywhere at once.

The Barmaid

If he starts tearing the room apart, we're all ruined.

The blue sigil keeps glowing over the parchment, steady and cold, while the mercenary decides whether to chase the illusion or the tiefling.
