Ranger
Up here. I found tracks beyond the outer wall, and the branches were snapped recently. Everyone who can climb, follow me.
The Ranger leads them through a narrow stair behind the shrine, keeping her bow ready. Sapphire climbs with the Priestess and Mara, while Sir Aldren brings up the rear. No one blocks the stairs or Sapphire’s path.
At the broken bell tower, wind moves through empty beams. Muddy tracks cross the weeds beyond the wall, and snapped branches mark a careful approach toward the sanctuary. Far off, a thin column of smoke rises from a hidden camp.

Ranger
There. The riders likely came from that hollow. They can reach the shrine by the eastern slope, screened from the trail until the last stretch.

Celia
Sapphire, what do you know of dungeon hunters? Do they search by tracks, scent, magic, or something else?

Sir Aldren
I will watch the eastern slope first, then trade places with the Ranger. The doorway and stairs remain open, Sapphire. Choose any position you need.
Sir Aldren points out the watch positions without assigning anyone a place. Mara keeps her sealed satchel beneath one arm, studying the distant smoke, while the Priestess waits quietly for Sapphire’s answer.

“"Saph run from hunters, nya. Hunters bad. they look for trail. anything off. Hunters not hunt like Saph. She is great hunter, she can smell from far, and see in dark. Her reflexes great too." *I start to ramble, a sign of being comfortable around the group.*”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Sapphire
Saph run from hunters, nya. Hunters bad. They look for trail, anything off. Hunters not hunt like Saph. Saph smell far, see in dark, reflexes great.
The explanation tumbles out faster and louder, carrying across the bell tower. Sapphire’s tail flicks as she gestures toward the smoke and the eastern slope.

Ranger
That is useful. They will search for broken stems, footprints, disturbed dust, and any scent that does not belong to the wild.

Sapphire
Saph hides trail. Hunters follow what changes. Saph can smell people before seeing them, and see them when dark hides them.

Celia
Then you know the danger better than we do. Your warning gives us time to disguise our movements and keep the sanctuary quiet.
A gust catches Sapphire’s words and sends them down the slope. The Ranger immediately signals for silence, while Sapphire’s voice leaves the group’s position less concealed.

Sir Aldren
Your knowledge is sound, Sapphire. We will use it, but speak softly now. The hunters may not know we are here yet.

“"Oh, sorry, Nya. She not talk long time. so Saph get exited with new friends." *I whisper, as I lay down on the ground holding my tail so it can't betray me by moving.*”
SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

Sapphire
Oh, sorry, nya. Saph not talk long time. Saph get excited with new friends.
Sapphire lowers herself onto the bell tower stones and folds both hands around her fluffy tail, holding it still against the twitching wind.

Ranger
Quietly spoken, then. No harm done. New friends are worth learning how to speak with.
The Ranger relaxes her raised hand and crouches near the broken wall, keeping her gaze on the distant smoke while leaving Sapphire room.

Celia
Thank you for telling us, Sapphire. You have been alone a long time, but you need not apologize for finding company.

Sir Aldren
Your tail is a poor traitor if you hold it so firmly. Rest now. We will keep watch, and you may whisper when words return.
Mara settles behind a fallen beam with her sealed satchel tucked close. Below, the wind carries smoke uphill, but the bell tower grows quiet around Sapphire’s still tail.
“"How do Saph help keep bad away, Nya? She never stayed in danger, She would run. Saph does not know what do?" *I stay in my position on the ground.*”
FAILURE (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +0)

Sapphire
How Saph help keep bad away, nya? Saph never stayed in danger. Saph run. Saph does not know what do.
Sapphire stays low on the bell tower stones, tail held close, and focuses her keen senses toward the eastern slope. She listens for steps and scents the wind without leaving her position.

Sapphire
Wind carries smoke and old mud. Saph cannot tell which scent is hunters.
A gust twists the smoke across the tower, masking the slope just as Sapphire catches a faint human scent. Her warning comes uncertainly, and the direction cannot be trusted.

Ranger
That is still useful. From where you sit, you can test the wind and tell us when a scent changes, but do not chase it.

Celia
You need not keep danger away alone, Sapphire. Watch, whisper, and let us decide what to do with the warning.

Sir Aldren
Stay in your place if that feels safest. If the wind shifts again, point toward the strongest scent, and we will guard the rest.
“"She will focus on scent, Nya." *I nod and sniff the air hoping to get info on the scents around.*”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Sapphire
Saph focus scent, nya.
Sapphire lowers her head and breathes slowly through her nose. Smoke, old mud, wet bark, and cold stone separate beneath the shifting wind instead of blending together.

Sapphire
Three people. Leather, horse, and ash. They came from the eastern slope.
The human scent resolves clearly now, carrying sweat, oiled leather, and a faint horse smell. The trail is fresh, and the smoke belongs to their hidden camp below.

Ranger
Eastern slope, then. How many scents, Sapphire? Tell me only what your nose can separate.

Celia
You found the distinction. Keep breathing gently, child, and let the wind bring you what it can.

Sir Aldren
I will watch that slope. Your warning gives us the advantage, Sapphire, and no one will ask you to chase them.
“"Three hunters, Nya. Saph just thought how hunters horse fit in shrine?" *I tilt my head.*”
FAILURE (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled -2)

Sapphire
Three hunters, nya. Saph just thought... how hunters horse fit in shrine?
Sapphire tilts her head, ears angled toward the eastern slope. Her question carries across the broken tower more clearly than she intends, and the Ranger immediately raises a warning finger.

Ranger
Not in the shrine. The horses remain below, likely tethered near their camp. The hunters climb on foot.

Sir Aldren
Quietly now, Sapphire. Your question is sensible, but the wind may carry your voice farther than theirs.
The Ranger points toward the hidden hollow, then toward the eastern slope. Sapphire can smell horse on the lower wind, while the fresher leather scent rises from above.

Celia
You have learned something important. Their mounts are not with them, so the narrow stair and tower may slow their return if they retreat.

Ranger
No more questions aloud for now. Point if the scent changes, Sapphire. We will understand.
“*I think for a moment on how I can motion to them that the hunters near. I decide pointing at where the smell is coming from, then motion a come here in that direction.*”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

Sapphire
The hunters are there. Point, then beckon. Quiet.
Sapphire points toward the eastern slope, then curls her fingers in a careful come-here motion. The gesture is clear, but her claw scrapes loudly across the stone.

Ranger
I understand. Their scent is strongest there. Keep low, and do not point again unless it changes.
The scrape carries down the broken tower. Below, a bird bursts from the weeds, and somewhere near the slope a boot shifts against loose rock.

Sir Aldren
They may have heard that. Move behind the beam, Sapphire. We will come to your side without exposing the stair.

Celia
You warned us successfully. Next time, use the soft part of your hand against your sleeve, and the signal will make no sound.
“*I let out a small whimper at failing the saty quiet part. I then pat my rusty short sword in a show that I'm willing to fight and not cower.*”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Sapphire gives a small, wounded whimper, then steadies herself. Her hand pats the rusty short sword at her side, making its worn hilt answer with a faint knock.
The gesture is unmistakable: she is frightened by the noise, but she is not offering to flee. Her ears remain low as she keeps close to the fallen beam.

Ranger
I saw you. Willing to fight is useful, Sapphire, but do not draw unless I give the word.

Sir Aldren
A brave signal. Keep the blade sheathed for now, and let our position protect you until they reveal themselves.
The Ranger shifts behind the broken wall, bow angled toward the eastern slope. Sir Aldren moves beside Sapphire’s beam, leaving her a clear path toward the stairs.

Celia
You need not cower, Sapphire. You also need not prove yourself alone. Stand ready, breathe softly, and stay with us.
Below, another stone clicks beneath a careful boot. The three companions hold still, and the tower’s wind carries the scent of leather upward.
“*I point to Mara and pat my chest with a fist, to try and signal I'm protecting her. I move to Mara's side so I can act as a last line of defense if needed. I rest my hand on the pummel of my sword.*”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Sapphire points toward Mara, then closes one fist against her chest. The promise is silent but unmistakable: Mara will not stand unguarded.
Keeping low, Sapphire crosses to Mara’s side and settles between the satchel and the open approach. Her hand rests on the rusty short sword’s pommel.

Mara Vey
You would protect me? Sapphire, I have no right to ask that of you.
Mara’s expression tightens with surprise, but she does not retreat. She shifts the sealed satchel behind her leg and keeps both eyes on the eastern slope.

Ranger
Good position. Hold there, Sapphire. Guard Mara, but wait for my word before drawing.

Celia
Your choice is clear, Sapphire. Remember, protection does not mean facing danger alone.
Another boot presses into the slope below. Leather scent rises through the wind, and three dark shapes begin to separate from the weeds beneath the bell tower.
“*I look over to the group a bit nervous. I give a thumbs up and hope for encouragement.*”
FAILURE (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled -2)

Sapphire glances toward the Ranger, Priestess, and Sir Aldren, her ears low. She raises one hand and gives an uncertain thumbs-up, hoping their faces will tell her she is doing well.
The gesture is too unfamiliar in the dim tower. The Ranger reads it as a signal and sharply shifts her bow toward the eastern slope, making Sapphire’s quiet hope vanish into sudden tension.

Ranger
No signal, Sapphire. Keep your hand down unless the scent changes. We need certainty now.
Sapphire lowers her hand at once, fingers curling against her chest. The movement leaves her without the encouragement she sought, and the hunters below continue climbing unseen.

Celia
You were trying to reassure us, I think. Your intention was kind, but this is not the moment for signs we may misunderstand.

Sir Aldren
You are still with us, Sapphire. Keep guarding Mara, keep the sword sheathed, and let your stillness speak.
Mara gives Sapphire a small, steady nod from behind the satchel. It is not the clear encouragement Sapphire wanted, but the group now watches her hands instead of waiting for another gesture.
“*I take a deep breath, and wait for the hunters to arrive.*”

Sapphire takes a deep, careful breath and holds still between Mara and the open approach. Leather, wet earth, and ash rise through the tower wind.

Sapphire
Hunters come. Saph waits quiet.
Below, the three hunters climb into view: three adult human men—one gaunt with a hooked nose, one broad-shouldered with a shaved head, and one lean with a narrow, weathered face—bent beneath the broken wall, bent beneath the broken wall. Their leather gear is dark with mud, and one carries a hooded lantern kept shuttered against the wind.

Ranger
Hold. Let them show whether they know we are here.
The Ranger’s bow remains trained downward, but she does not loose an arrow. Sir Aldren stands beside the beam, shielding the stair without closing Sapphire’s path.

Mara Vey
They must not find the satchel. Sapphire, stay behind the wall with me.
Sapphire keeps her hand away from the sword and waits as instructed. The hunters pause below, searching the weeds and broken stones while the tower holds its breath.
“*I see the guy with the narrow face, and stifle a laugh at how that mans chin looks pointy and sharp enough to cut glass. and I think he looks funny.*”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -2)
Sapphire spots the lean hunter’s narrow, weathered face below the wall. His pointed chin catches her eye, sharp enough in silhouette to resemble a shard of glass.

Sapphire
His chin looks funny. Saph must not laugh.
She presses her lips together and tucks her chin behind the beam. A breath catches in her throat, but a small snort escapes before she can swallow it.
The sound is quiet, yet distinct in the held silence. Below, the lean hunter stops and lifts his head toward the tower.

Lean Hunter
Did you hear that? Someone is above us.

Ranger
Nobody move. Sapphire, stay low and keep silent now.
The Ranger’s bow tightens toward the slope as the hunters spread beneath the broken wall. Sapphire’s failed restraint has given them a direction, and the tower’s hiding place grows precarious.
“*I reman near Mara. disappointed in myself for failing to stay quiet.*”
Sapphire stays beside Mara Vey, keeping her body low between the sealed satchel and the open approach. She lowers her ears and presses both hands against her knees.

Sapphire
Saph tried to be quiet. Saph failed.
Her tail curls tightly around her ankles, its usual restless movement stilled. She keeps her gaze on the stone beneath the beam and does not reach for the sword.

Mara Vey
You stayed where you were needed. One small sound does not erase that, Sapphire.
Mara Vey speaks barely above the wind. She leaves the satchel protected behind her leg and gives Sapphire room, while the hunters continue searching below without finding the tower’s hidden faces.

Ranger
Good. Stay near Mara, keep still, and let the silence return. We have not lost our position.
Sapphire draws one slow breath through her nose and remains near Mara Vey, listening to leather shift below and holding herself quiet as the tower settles around them.
“*I look around seeing how we have five people, and there are only three hunters.* "Saph need speak. She noticed numbers different Nya."”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +2)

Sapphire
Saph need speak. Five here, only three hunters. Numbers different, nya.
Sapphire lifts her gaze from the stone and quietly counts with her fingers: herself, Mara, the Ranger, the Priestess, and Sir Aldren. Below, three hunters remain visible.

Ranger
Yes. Five defenders above, three hunters below. That gives us an advantage, if we keep it.

Mara Vey
She is right. They do not know our number, and they cannot see how we are placed.
The Ranger lowers her bow a fraction, then points silently to the broken wall, the stair, and the open approach. Sir Aldren shifts to cover the stair without blocking Sapphire.

Celia
A good observation, Sapphire. Five against three does not mean we rush, but it means we need not panic.

Sir Aldren
Keep still, and let them believe the tower is empty. When they expose their purpose, our numbers will matter.
“"Stair narrow, Nya" *My mind is formulating a strategy something I've never done before.* "Only way up. metal man block. no up, Nya."”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled -1)

Sapphire
Stair narrow, Nya. Only way up. Metal man block. No up, Nya.
Sapphire points from the hunters below to the cramped stair, then taps Sir Sir Aldren’s armored shoulder. He understands and plants himself across the narrow passage, leaving no room to climb.

Sir Aldren
A sound plan. They cannot come up while I hold this stair. Stay behind me, Sapphire.
Sir Aldren’s greaves grind against the stone with a sharp scrape. The noise carries downward, and the three hunters stop searching, now certain defenders guard the tower above.

Ranger
Good. The stair is sealed, and they cannot reach us that way. Keep your position, everyone.

Lean Hunter
They have someone blocking the steps. We cannot climb through that armor.
Sapphire remains beside Mara, watching the armored barrier fill the stair mouth. Her first formed strategy holds, though the scrape has surrendered their surprise.
