The eastern ravine road ends beneath the gates of a walled city. Behind Rand, the crossing remains sealed around the hooded bell-bearer; ahead, travelers crowd the gate, posing as merchants, pilgrims, and servants.
The city bells hang muffled in dark cloth. Black thread knots beneath several door-latches, pale-eyed hounds patrol the battlements, and a great dragon, an enormous crimson-scaled beast with broad leathery wings and two swept-back horns circles high above, its attention following Rand's approach.
Among the crowded disguises, refugees from the watchposts keep their faces lowered and their bundles close. A masked man, a lean adult man in a dust-colored hooded cloak, soft leather boots, and fingerless gloves moves through the gate line, quietly studying each arrival.
At a public well, a young adult woman, lean and oval-faced, with a small silver nose ring with dark skin, loose black hair, and a blue-gray traveling dress turns toward Rand. Her steady gaze catches him with an immediate, unsettling intensity.
Liora
You are not one of them. Please, do not look toward the people carrying the gray bundles.
The masked searcher pauses several paces away, pretending to inspect a pilgrim's cart. Above the walls, the dragon banks once, and a shadow passes over the crowded gate.
Liora
If you mean to help them, choose quickly. The city is watching the gate, and I can hide one more stranger at the well.
✓ Quest Accepted
Conceal Rand within the refugees' network
“Rand accepts the girl at the well's offer, his Willpower keeping him calm as he speaks with rare warmth and quiet, playful confidence. She finds him intriguing and returns his flirtation with genuine interest. When a dragon threatens the village, Rand summons his silver-white bow of the One Power. Using Arcana, Spellcasting, and Ranged Combat, he fires an arrow that erupts in fire and lightning on impact. He offers his defense of the villagers as proof of good faith, seeking entry into their secret refugee network. Against the masked Searcher, Rand draws his heron-marked sword, combining Agility, Melee Combat, and Arcana to protect the refugees and earn their trust. That night, Rand uses Willpower, Arcana, and Spellcasting to enter the World of Dreams and seek the girl. She welcomes him, and their mutual attraction deepens through playful conversation as he asks about the city, its dangers, the Searcher, and the refugee network. He doesn't force her answers.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)
Rand
Then hide me. I promise to be less troublesome than I look, and I accept your offer.
Liora
That is a dangerous promise. Still, I find I want to test it. My name is Liora.
Liora draws Rand behind the well’s worn stone rim as the great dragon dives toward the gate, an ancient crimson dragoness. Disguised refugees scatter, their bundles spilling across the road while the masked searcher reaches for a concealed blade.
Rand
Stay behind me.
A silver-white bow forms in Rand’s hands. His arrow strikes the ground before the refugees and bursts into fire and branching lightning, forcing the dragon skyward and stopping the panic at the gate.
Liora
You chose the helpless first. Come inside, Rand. The network is yours to meet.
The masked searcher lunges for a fleeing refugee. Rand’s heron-marked sword intercepts him with a precise flash of steel, turning the masked searcher aside without touching the terrified civilian. That night, Rand enters the World of Dreams and finds Liora waiting beside a moonlit well.
