You arrive in the stale darkness of a brewer’s cellar. A broad-shouldered middle-aged man in a weathered green coat braces himself against the barred door, while frightened villagers cluster around a rough table.

Stolen maps, ink pots, and half-empty casks crowd the tabletop. Beyond the threshold, wolves circle through the night, their claws rasping steadily against the wood.

Hold fast! The land must be defended before nightfall, or every road and village from here to the river will be lost.

Several villagers clutch tools and kitchen knives as though they were soldiers. One elderly woman, a slight elderly woman with a deeply lined face, silver hair braided beneath a brown wool shawl stares at you, then quickly looks to the captain, a middle-aged man with a weathered square face, cropped auburn hair, and a scar through one eyebrow for an explanation.

Captain, the stranger was not here a moment ago.

Then perhaps the Pattern has sent us one more blade. Stranger, if you can fight, take your place. If not, stay clear of the door.

The timber shudders. A pale claw hooks briefly beneath the threshold, and the iron bar gives a sharp, splintering crack as the captain turns toward you.

The iron bar snaps. The cellar door bows inward, and a wash of cold blue light spills through the widening cracks, freezing the wolves’ claws against the threshold.

Back from the door! All of you, now!

The bandit captain drags the elderly villager behind the table as the villagers stumble away. Frost veins race across the wood, outlining a symbol none of them placed there.

That mark was not there when we barred the door.

Outside, the wolves give one answering howl, but their bodies remain rigid and silent. Then the blue radiance folds inward, pulling the broken door and every frozen claw toward the dark beyond.

No one touches that light. I have seen warding before, but never one that opens like a wound.

The cellar falls quiet except for dripping frost. Beyond the threshold waits a narrow passage of starless blue, descending where the brewer’s yard should be.

Rand draws the cellar’s buried earth upward. Stone surges through the breach, sealing the blue passage behind a thick, seamless wall as dust trembles from the rafters.

The wall settles with a deep final thud. Its face is dark granite veined with faint silver, and the frost melts away from the threshold.

By the Light. You closed it.

Beyond the new stone, the howling stops. A narrow silver line remains in the granite, forming a map of the roads beyond the cellar and marking three red points.

Those marks. The old watchposts. I thought every one had fallen.

The frightened villagers lower their makeshift weapons. The bandit captain steps closer to the wall but keeps his hands at his sides, studying the red points with wary concentration.

Then we have a road, and perhaps a warning. Stranger, you have bought this cellar a little more time.

The silver map brightens beneath the dust, revealing one red point directly beneath the brewer’s floor. A seam appears there, clean and deliberate.
